Are Chelsea fans turning on one of their longest serving players?

Chelsea Cesar Azpilicueta

Chelsea were left frustrated after throwing away a 2-0 lead against Sheffield United at the weekend, and some fans took to Social Media to vent their frustrations at one of the most senior players at Stamford Bridge.

After Tammy Abraham had put Chelsea 2-0 up, the game looked finished by half-time, but goals from Callum Robertson and an 89th-minute own goal from Kurt Zouma meant Chelsea had to share the points, to the delight of the travelling Sheffield United fans.

Chelsea fans turn on Cesar Azpilicueta

After the match, there were some interesting tweets from Chelsea fans, with many blaming Cesar Azpilicueta for the dropped points, and not for the first time this season. The club captain has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League for a few years now, but is his age catching up with him? Or is he being singled out for unfair criticism?

It is pretty clear amongst a few Chelsea fans, that their captain isn’t the player he once was and they’re calling for him to be dropped from the starting line-up. After the international break Chelsea Wolves away from home before getting their Champions League campaign underway against Valencia.

Who should replace Azpilicueta in the Chelsea starting line-up?

It is a real shame to see the Chelsea fans turn on Azpilicueta, but if he was dropped by Frank Lampard, who would replace him in the team? Rudiger is currently injured so Zouma is partnering Tommori in central defence, with Azpilicueta in his usual right-back slot. However, the fans are calling for youngster Reece James to get a chance in the first team when he returns to the team.

Lampard has already put his faith in Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham this season, so there is no reason to believe that another youngster won’t be given the chance to impress if their current club captain doesn’t improve.
