Manchester City vs West Ham Preview

Liverpool’s draw with Manchester United at the weekend means that City have now reduced the gap between themselves and The Reds to a solitary point. It was an extremely good weekend for the current champions, who beat Chelsea on penalties to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley on Sunday afternoon. The games are coming thick and fast as we approach the final furlong of the campaign, and West Ham visit the Etihad on Wednesday keen to add to a disappointing tally of just four wins on the road this season.

The hosts are 1/7 favourites to take all three points here which is unsurprising given that they’ve been beaten just once in front of their own fans up until now. After a sticky patch around the festive period, Guardiola’s men seem to have clicked into gear once again and are currently averaging four goals a game in their most recent cluster of fixtures. Can they continue this trend when West Ham visit? I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. You can get 11/10 on The Citizens winning this one and over 3.5 goals being scored in the game, which seems far more likely than a low-scoring affair given their form of late.

Anytime Scorer Prediction

There was a sense of poetic justice on Sunday afternoon when Raheem Sterling stepped up to convert the decisive penalty in City’s shootout victory. Infamously the target of abuse from Chelsea fans when his side visited Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign, the former Liverpool winger took on the responsibility and stuck away his spot-kick to send the travelling hoards into jubilant raptures. The 24-year-old averaged a goal every other game last season and isn’t too far away from replicating that impressive return once again, having already found the net fifteen times so far. Sterling looks a far more rounded player than he did prior to Guardiola’s arrival in Manchester and his attacking statistics are night and day from the returns he was previously posting. He’s 6/5 to notch at some stage against West Ham.

Correct Score Prediction

I’ll not hold back – I expect City to continue their recent rampage and make another statement to Liverpool, who host Watford on the same night. West Ham frankly don’t travel particularly well and also tend to struggle for goals when playing outside the capital. Should the Premier League come down to goal difference, as it so famously did during the 2011/12 campaign, then you’d have to fancy City due to the resounding nature with which they’ve dispatched of opposing teams of late. They’re an 11/1 poke to win 4-0 on Wednesday which looks far from out of the question.
