Long Distance Cup (Group 2, 2m)

The two-mile opener looks a strong staying heat, with Aidan O’Brien’s Scandinavia among the leading contenders after being beaten only a short neck in the Prix du Cadran, where Caballo De Mar also figured. St Leger winner Highwayman represents the Classic generation, and the previous winner Trawlerman is the kind of proven stayer the race tends to reward.

Key trend: three-year-olds have a dismal record here — none of the 21 from the Classic generation to run has finished better than second, so Highwayman has history to overcome. French form is a reliable guide, with a string of recent winners arriving via Longchamp.

Sprint (Group 1, 6f)

The six-furlong Group 1 is the one race O’Brien is unlikely to contest, and Almeraq heads the ante-post market at no bigger than 11/10. The greys Binhareer and Jasour are among the alternatives in a race that often goes to a battle-hardened sprinter.

Key trend: no horse wearing headgear has ever won the Sprint — 49 have tried and failed. Don’t be put off by a busy campaign, though: several winners were on their ninth, tenth, or eleventh run of the year, and recent Haydock Sprint Cup form has been a strong pointer, even for horses beaten there.

Fillies and Mares Stakes (Group 1, 1m 4f)

Last year’s winner Kalpana returns as the standout, now rated 125, and is Andrew Balding’s most important card in the title race given the £283,550 first prize. O’Brien’s Oaks winner Minnie Hauk, a daughter of Frankel, is a leading rival, with previous runner-up Estrange also in the mix.

Key trend: a low draw is a negative — seven of the 15 winners came from stalls 10, 11 or 12, and none from stalls 1, 3, 5 or 6. Historically, winners were rated 111 to 115, a mark Kalpana smashed when scoring off 122 last year.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group 1, 1m)

The £623,810 Group 1 mile could feature O’Brien’s Constitution River and the French-trained Rayif, from the in-form yard of Francis Graffard. It is one of the most valuable races on the card and usually falls to a horse bang in form.

Key trend: French-trained runners have an outstanding record, with four winners and three runners-up from just 16 runners. Ten of the winners had won on their previous start, six of them in Group 1 company.

Champion Stakes (Group 1, 1m 2f)

The £737,230 Champion Stakes is the afternoon’s feature and looks a vintage renewal, with Ombudsman (rated 132), Calandagan (130) and O’Brien’s Gstaad (125) all set to clash. Calandagan arrives fresh after 84 days off — no negative here, with several winners having returned from long breaks — while O’Brien also holds Hawk Mountain.

Key trend: O’Brien has never won this race with a colt or with his 27 previous male challengers all beaten; his only winner was the filly Magical in 2019. Only four runnings since 2011 have featured three horses rated 125 or higher, so this is a rare clash of the very best.

Balmoral Handicap (1m)

The competitive mile handicap closes the card, and John Gosden will again be chasing a first win in the race — he has had 16 runners without success, finishing second five times, and could run Gavriel, a close fourth in the Cambridgeshire.

Key trend: horses carrying a penalty struggle — only one of 21 has won — so Tribal Chief, Naval Light and Mr Swivell have that to overcome with their 6lb penalties. A low-to-middle draw helps, with three winners since 2014 coming from stall 4, and recent form in the 7f handicap run at Ascot a fortnight earlier is worth noting.

The Trainers’ Title Race: O’Brien v Balding

A sub-plot running through the whole afternoon is the battle for the trainers’ championship between Aidan O’Brien and Andrew Balding, with Champions Day likely to prove decisive. Balding led by just over £82,000 at the start of the week but holds far fewer cards — Kalpana his outstanding chance in the Fillies and Mares. O’Brien has up to 16 possible runners across the card, with the likes of Scandinavia, Constitution River, Gstaad and Minnie Hauk his strongest hands, so the prize money on offer could swing the title either way.

Elsewhere, Billy Loughnane is set to be crowned champion jockey, having led for most of the season.

Champions Day Betting Trends

  • Follow the French. A total of 24 Champions Day winners had their previous run in France, and 15 runners from the Arc meeting have gone on to win at Ascot — so Longchamp form is worth a close look.
  • Fresh can be best. Long layoffs are no barrier, with past winners returning from 84, 122, 154 and even 510 days off.
  • Headgear fails in the Sprint. None of the 49 headgear-wearing runners has ever won the six-furlong Group 1.
  • Three-year-olds struggle in the Long Distance Cup. None of the 21 from the Classic generation has finished better than second.
  • Going is often good. Despite its reputation, “good” has featured in the description six times, and is forecast again this year.
