Who Is Ruby Walsh?

Ruby Walsh is widely regarded as the greatest National Hunt jockey of his generation and one of the finest the sport has ever seen. Born in County Kildare in 1979, he is the son of trainer Ted Walsh and grew up immersed in Irish racing.

He retired from race riding in May 2019 after fracturing his leg at Punchestown – the same meeting and the same injury that had ended his 2016 season. By the time he walked away, his record spoke for itself: 59 Cheltenham Festival winners – more than any jockey in the history of the meeting – including two Gold Cups (Kauto Star 2009, Al Ferof was not a Gold Cup, Kauto Star 2007 and 2009), two Grand Nationals (Papillon 2000, Hedgehunter 2005) and a record seven Champion Chase victories on Moscow Flyer, Well Chief and Big Buck’s.

His association with Willie Mullins defined the second half of his career. Walsh was Mullins’ retained jockey from 2002 until retirement, riding virtually every significant runner from the yard at Cheltenham. That relationship gave him unparalleled knowledge of the Irish horses that have come to dominate the modern Festival – knowledge he now brings directly to his punditry work.

Since retirement, Walsh has become one of the most insightful and candid pundits in the sport. He works as a racing ambassador for Paddy Power and as a pundit for ITV Racing, and his knowledge of Irish form – particularly from the Mullins and Elliott yards – gives him an edge that few analysts can match.

Where Does Ruby Walsh Publish His Tips?

Paddy Power News – Walsh’s primary tipping outlet. He publishes selections for every ITV Racing day throughout the National Hunt season, with detailed race-by-race reasoning on each pick and a designated best bet. Published at news.paddypower.com.

ITV Racing – Walsh is a regular pundit on ITV Racing’s coverage, particularly on big race days and during the major festivals. He provides live race analysis and selections as part of the broadcast team.

Paddy Power Cheltenham and Grand National coverage – during the major festivals, Walsh provides expanded coverage including ante-post selections, Lucky 15 tips and daily previews for all races at the meeting.

Ruby Walsh’s Tipping Style

Walsh brings a jockey’s perspective to his analysis that is genuinely different from most pundits. Having ridden in virtually every big race in the National Hunt calendar during his career, his race-reading ability is exceptional – he understands precisely how races are likely to be run and which horses will be suited by the tactical shape of the contest.

Irish form. Walsh’s deepest strength. His career with Willie Mullins gave him first-hand knowledge of virtually every significant Irish National Hunt horse. He is one of the first pundits to identify value in Irish raiders at Cheltenham, Aintree and elsewhere before the market catches up.

Willie Mullins horses. Walsh knows how the Mullins operation works better than almost anyone. His assessment of Mullins horses – which are ready to run, which need the race, which are being produced for a specific target – carries significant weight.

Patience and value. Walsh is not a momentum tipster. He looks for horses he believes are overpriced relative to their actual chance and is happy to take a big price when he is confident. His ante-post selections at Cheltenham and the Grand National regularly include horses at double-figure prices.

Going conditions. As a jockey who rode on all types of ground throughout his career, Walsh is acutely aware of how ground affects individual horses. His selections frequently note whether conditions are ideal, adequate or a concern for a given horse.

Jumping ability. Walsh’s race-riding experience gives him a level of detail on how individual horses jump – both over hurdles and fences – that most form-based analysts cannot replicate. He regularly highlights jumping concerns with market leaders and jumping strengths with value picks.

Ruby Walsh’s Record at the Major Festivals

Cheltenham Festival – Walsh’s 59 Festival winners as a jockey give him a unique perspective on the meeting. As a pundit he provides ante-post selections on the championship races via Paddy Power in the weeks before the Festival and daily tips across all 28 races. His Cheltenham picks are among the most widely followed of any pundit during Festival week.

Grand National – Walsh won the Grand National twice in the saddle (Papillon 2000, Hedgehunter 2005) and provides ante-post tips and daily coverage throughout the Aintree Festival. His knowledge of staying chasers and the demands of the National fences makes him one of the most authoritative voices on the race. See our Grand National tips page and Grand National free bets for the latest.

Punchestown Festival – Walsh’s home festival. His knowledge of Irish horses and the Punchestown track makes him a particularly reliable source of tips at the end-of-season Irish championship meeting.

Leopardstown Christmas and Dublin Racing Festival – Walsh is a prominent pundit for both major Leopardstown meetings, providing selections via Paddy Power.

Using Ruby Walsh’s Tips

Check the odds. Walsh’s tips are published with the odds at the time of writing via Paddy Power. Prices move, particularly on Irish horses in UK races, where Walsh’s backing can attract significant market attention. Always check current odds before placing.

Each-way selections. Walsh frequently advises each-way bets on bigger-priced selections. Check place terms before placing – the number of places paid varies between bookmakers. See our each-way betting guide for a full explanation.

Best Odds Guaranteed. Taking a price early on a Walsh selection with BOG protection means you are paid at the better price if the SP drifts out. See our BOG guide for which bookmakers offer this and from what time.

Ante-post selections. For Walsh’s festival ante-post picks, always use a bookmaker offering Non-Runner No Bet. If the horse does not run, your stake is returned in cash. See our Non-Runner No Bet guide for full details, and our Cheltenham NRNB guide for Festival-specific coverage.
