This offer plays out over several days rather than landing in one go, and the 24-hour windows are the part people get caught by. Here’s the sequence:

The two terms to plan around: each free bet must be used at minimum odds of 4/1 (5.0), and each expires after 24 hours. That’s a demanding combination — most bookmakers give you seven days and accept odds from evens. In practice it means you need a 4/1+ selection lined up on each of two consecutive days, and free bets can’t be split into smaller stakes.
The Terms That Catch People Out
Three conditions are easy to miss, and each one voids the offer:
It must be your first bet. Star Sports’ terms specify the qualifying first bet — so if you place a smaller bet before your £40 qualifier, you may lose the offer entirely. Make the £40 bet your opening wager on the account.
You must sign up through an affiliate link. The terms state the offer is “only available to customers signing up through a recognised affiliate partner.” Registering directly at Star Sports and typing BET40GET20 will not unlock it, and it can’t be added afterwards. Don’t cash out. Cashed-out and void bets don’t qualify — let the qualifying bet run to settlement.
A few other terms worth knowing: free bets can’t be exchanged for cash, can’t be part-used or carried forward, and can’t be used alongside any other current promotion. Opening more than one account to claim the offer twice will see the duplicates closed and bets voided.
Is the Star Sports Welcome Offer Any Good?
Honestly? As a pure value proposition, no — and it’s worth being straight about that. You stake £40 to receive £20, a 0.5:1 return. Compare that with the market:
