Tom Segal is the most influential horse racing tipster in the UK. Writing as Pricewise in the Racing Post, he has spent over two decades finding horses the bookmakers have underestimated – and the sport’s biggest firms know it. William Hill’s chief executive once told shareholders that profits “could have been a lot better, if it wasn’t for Pricewise.” That is quite the endorsement.
Segal’s confirmed selections and latest tips are below. His weekly Pricewise column is behind the Racing Post+ paywall, but his ante-post selections and major festival picks receive wide coverage and are tracked here as soon as they are published.
Today’s Tom Segal Tips
Best Bookmakers for Pricewise Tips
Segal’s selections consistently move markets – the best prices on his selections are available immediately after publication and before money floods in. Use a bookmaker with Best Odds Guaranteed to protect your price.
Who Is Tom Segal (Pricewise)?
Tom Segal has worked at the Racing Post since May 1996 and took on the famous Pricewise column in 2001. In the years since he has become the closest thing British racing has to a tipster legend – a man whose selections carry enough weight to visibly move the markets at the sport’s biggest bookmakers.
The Pricewise column originally ran on Saturday mornings, giving punters early prices on the weekend’s racing and identifying value before the market could adjust. Segal’s reputation for finding big-priced winners at the major festivals – particularly Cheltenham, Royal Ascot and the Grand National – built over years to the point where his ante-post selections now attract significant attention the moment they are published, regardless of the day.
His selections cover the entire racing calendar – National Hunt through the winter and Flat racing through the summer – and he is among the most respected voices on ante-post markets for the Classic races, the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National.
Where Does Tom Segal Publish His Tips?
Racing Post (Pricewise column) – Segal’s primary outlet. His weekly Pricewise column and ante-post selections are published on the Racing Post website and in the print edition. Access requires a Racing Post+ subscription. Published at racingpost.com.
Ante-post Pricewise – a separate strand of his Racing Post work covering ante-post markets for the major races throughout the season. These selections are published when Segal identifies value at ante-post prices – not on a fixed schedule. Recent selections have covered the 2,000 Guineas, 1,000 Guineas, Grand National and Cheltenham Festival championship races.
Racing Post YouTube and podcast – Segal appears regularly on Racing Post In The Know content and podcast discussions, particularly in the build-up to the Cheltenham Festival where he discusses his selections in more detail than the written column.
Note on access: The full weekly Pricewise column requires a Racing Post subscription. His confirmed ante-post selections for the major festivals are widely reported and tracked here on this page as they are published.
Tom Segal’s Tipping Style
What makes Segal genuinely different from most analysts is his refreshing honesty about how he works.
He is a “visuals guy”. Segal is a self-confessed visual assessor of horses rather than a data modeller. He trusts his eye for athletic, progressive horses – horses that move well, that do the right things, that look like they are going the right way. He backs them when he is satisfied they have been properly prepared for the race in front of them.
He looks for value the market has missed. The entire premise of Pricewise is finding horses priced too generously by the market. Segal is not interested in short-priced favourites. His selections are almost always at double-figure prices or at minimum represent value relative to his assessment of the horse’s true chance. The bigger the price he believes is wrong, the more confident his recommendation.
He backs lightly raced, progressive horses. Segal has a clear preference for horses early in their careers where the form book has not fully caught up with their potential. A horse with two or three wins from as many starts, visually impressive, stepping up in trip or class – this is a classic Pricewise profile. He is sceptical of horses whose full ability is already priced in.
He is honest about his methodology. Segal openly discusses which horses he likes and why in plain language. His reasoning in the Pricewise column is specific and direct – not hedged with caveats. When he backs a horse at 25/1 he explains precisely why he thinks the market is wrong, not just that the horse has a chance.
He is not afraid to take on the market. Segal regularly backs against heavily supported market leaders at the Cheltenham Festival and major race days. If his assessment of a race differs from the market consensus, he backs his own judgement.
The Pricewise Effect
The phrase “Pricewise effect” is a recognised phenomenon in British racing. When Segal publishes a selection on a horse, particularly in ante-post markets, the price shortens almost immediately as his readers and professional followers take the price.
This means two things for punters following his tips. First, the value he identifies at the time of writing may not be available by the time you place your bet – particularly for ante-post selections published online. Getting on early is essential. Second, a horse moving in the market following a Pricewise selection is itself a signal that others have agreed with his assessment.
Best Odds Guaranteed is essential for Pricewise tips. If you take a price on a Segal selection early and the SP ends up shorter, BOG means you collect at the price you took rather than the SP. If the SP is bigger, you collect at SP. Either way you are protected. See our Best Odds Guaranteed guide for the full list of BOG bookmakers and start times.
Tom Segal at the Major Festivals
Cheltenham Festival – the highlight of Segal’s year. He publishes ante-post selections on the five championship races and the major handicaps in the weeks before the Festival, and provides daily Pricewise picks across all four days during the meeting. His Cheltenham Festival record is among the best of any tipster in the sport and his ante-post selections consistently attract the most market interest of any writer in the build-up to the meeting.
Royal Ascot – Segal is one of the Racing Post’s lead tipsters for Royal Ascot, covering the five-day meeting with daily Pricewise selections and ante-post picks on the major Flat races.
Grand National – Segal provides ante-post selections on the National and daily tips across the three-day Aintree Festival. For the best offers to use on his Grand National selections see our Grand National free bets page.
The Classics – Segal is one of the most respected voices on ante-post markets for the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the Oaks. His ante-post Pricewise selections on the Classics are published well in advance of the races and frequently at big prices.
For ante-post selections always use a bookmaker offering Non-Runner No Bet. If the horse does not run, your stake is returned in cash. See our Non-Runner No Bet guide for full details and our Cheltenham NRNB guide for the Festival specifically.
Using Tom Segal’s Tips
Act quickly on ante-post selections. Segal’s selections move markets immediately on publication. The price he names in his column may be gone within minutes. If you want to follow a Pricewise ante-post selection, check the current price as soon as possible after publication and compare across bookmakers.
Use Best Odds Guaranteed on day-of-race selections. For Festival and weekend Pricewise selections, placing with a BOG bookmaker from 8am on race day protects your price if it drifts while still allowing you to collect at SP if the horse shortens. See our BOG guide.
Expect big prices. Segal’s selections are almost never short-priced favourites. If you are following Pricewise tips, be prepared for selections at 8/1, 12/1, 16/1 and beyond. The strike rate is lower than a tips service built around shorter-priced selections – but the returns when they land are significantly bigger.
The Racing Post subscription question. The full weekly Pricewise column requires a Racing Post+ subscription. His ante-post selections for the major festivals are widely reported in racing media and tracked on this page. If you want access to his full Saturday selections throughout the season, a Racing Post subscription is the only way to get them directly.
