The Premier League’s January arrivals who are struggling to make an immediate impact
With Premier League clubs spending a staggering £815million during the January transfer window, it is fair to say that England’s elite have certainly flexed their financial muscle.
However, while the likes of Chelsea might have shattered a string of records as they really broke the bank last month, not all of the Premier League’s new arrivals have hit the ground running.
While Liverpool’s new £45million signing Cody Gakpo might have clicked into gear following a sluggish start to life at Anfield, other top-flight arrivals are still trying to find their feet.
With clubs from across the country still trying to get the best out of their January signings, we have taken a look at a few new recruits that are struggling to adjust to life elsewhere.
Mykhailo Mudryk – Chelsea
While it might have been Enzo Fernandez’s record-breaking arrival at Stamford Bridge that stole most of the headlines last month, Mykhailo Mudryk was another blockbuster new recruit in SW6.
Although it might have appeared that Mudryk was inching towards a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal during the January transfer window, it was Chelsea who forked out a staggering £89million in a remarkable late swoop.
However, while there might have been plenty of excitement around west London following Mudryk’s arrival, the former Shakhtar Donetsk star has failed to adjust to life in England’s top-flight.
With Graham Potter firmly at the heart of a nightmare spell at Stamford Bridge and really fighting for his job, the Premier League giants have gained a reputation for their struggles in the final third.
Already priced as high as 25/1 to claim an essential top-four finish this season, Mudryk is yet to open his Chelsea account and has also failed to provide an assist during the early stages of his tenure.
Although Potter might have insisted over recent weeks that the 22-year-old needs more time to adjust, Mudryk has to show some signs as to the player that Chelsea spent almost £100million on.
Georginio Rutter – Leeds
Parting ways with Jesse Marsch following an extended crisis at Elland Road and failing to find an immediate replacement for the American manager, Leeds appear to be dealing with a string of issues both on and off the pitch.
While the Yorkshire-based outfit might have stunned many across Europe during the January transfer window as they snapped up Juventus ace Weston McKennie on Deadline Day, another of their new arrival has struggled to find his feet.
Making quite the statement last month as they broke their transfer record after agreeing a £35.5million deal with Hoffenheim for Georginio Rutter, Leeds were hoping that the 20-year-old would have offered more of an immediate boost.
With Patrick Bamford continuing to deal with a host of injury issues on either side of the World Cup break, fans around Elland Road thought that Rutter would be chucked in at the deep end.
However, yet to open his account in Yorkshire or make a single start for the relegation scrappers following his record-breaking move, the French U21 international appears to have been quite the gamble from Leeds’ hierarchy.
While the Whites placed at 21/20 to lose their Premier League status this season, Leeds need someone who is ready to play a leading role now.
Danny Ings – West Ham
Although West Ham might have reached the Europa League semi-finals last season and gained a string of plaudits, the Hammers have come crashing back down to earth in some style.
While David Moyes’ men might have spent £180million on new recruits last summer, they now find themselves at the heart of a relegation scrap and the ex-Manchester United boss is facing a huge amount of scrutiny.
With Moyes priced at 3/1 to be the next Premier League manager to be given the sack, fans around the London Stadium have a real headache over their side’s extended issues in the final third.
Drawing a blank in 10 of their 23 Premier League appearances this season, West Ham would have been hoping that January arrival Danny Ings would have made more of an impact in east London.
Picking up a knock just seconds after making his debut for Moyes’ struggling squad in a 2-0 victory against Everton on January 21st, Ings has failed to find any stability since making a £15million move from Aston Villa last month.
Yet to bag a single strike for his new club or make a full debut in Moyes’ starting XI, the one-time Liverpool man could already be regretting his move to the London Stadium.
