There is another round of midweek Premier League fixtures this week, before the FA Cup third round takes centre stage at the weekend, and once again we have asked our betting expert to pick out the best bets and a score prediction for each game.
In the Sunday matches, all four best bets were winners, including a 22/5 bookings tip in Everton vs Brentford, and we also landed the correct score in the Tottenham vs Sunderland game.
There are no fewer than eight matches taking place on Wednesday night, and you can see our betting tips and predictions for each one below.
Without sounding like a broken record, how can you bet on any Tottenham match with any confidence? Their results are so up and down, it is hard to nail them down, but their away form is better than at home. Bournemouth are also having a really poor season and come into this match with no wins in 11 games. Semenyo is still a Bournemouth player to this point, and he is still starting matches, but for how long? Spurs have only won once in their last five games (away at Crystal Palace,) and they’ve only scored two goals in that run. Bournemouth’s matches are the opposite in regards to goals – they lost 3-2 at home to Arsenal at the weekend, recently drew 4-4 at Manchester United, 2-2 at Chelsea and lost 4-1 at Brentford. However, with Thomas Frank’s pragmatic approach, the score might be kept down in this one.
In contrast to Bournemouth and Tottenham, Brentford and Sunderland are having brilliant seasons and find themselves in the top half of the table going into the midweek matches. Brentford battered Everton 4-2 on Sunday, with Igor Thiago continuing to have a fantastic season, scoring a hat-trick. Sunderland held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw and are back in London for this Wednesday night fixture. Sunderland are certainly over-performing this season, but even with players away at AFCON, they continue to pick up points, drawing their last four matches. The Black Cats’ defence will have to be at their best again here, against this Brentford side, who have scored four goals in two of their last three matches. The Bees have only lost twice at home all season, and we’re predicting a win by the odd goal in three here.
Crystal Palace haven’t won in their last seven in all competitions, and lost 2-0 at Newcastle on Sunday. They acted early in the transfer window to bring in Brennan Johnson, and he is likely to start again here. Aston Villa are level with Manchester City in second place in the Premier League and when you consider the start they had, it has been a remarkable turnaround by Unai Emery’s men. Ollie Watkins has now found his form, scoring four in his last three matches, and he is hard to stop once he gets on a run. Palace have only scored twice in their last five matches and they’ve failed to win in their last four at home, scoring just two goals.
SCORE PREDICTION – Crystal Palace 0-2 Aston Villa (12/1 with bet365)
Everton’s defeat at home to Brentford halted any momentum they gained from their win at Nottingham Forest, and David Moyes’ side are really struggling without Ilman N’diaye and Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall. This is a bad time to play Wolves after their 3-0 win at home to West Ham, and despite being rock bottom of the table, they have been playing better in recent weeks and probably deserved more out of matches against Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool. In contrast, this is probably a good time to play Everton, given their injuries and N’diaye away at AFCON. You couldn’t bet on Everton with any confidence here, and a punt on Wolves to win or draw appeals more.
This West London derby has an extra edge with Chelsea announcing Liam Rosenior’s appointment, and Fulham are in good form going into this one. They kept their unbeaten run going with a last-minute screamer to salvage a draw against Liverpool last time out. That took them to four unbeaten and moved them further away from relegation trouble. Chelsea also needed a last-minute equaliser in their draw with Manchester City at the weekend, but that result took them to four without a win and just one win in their last nine Premier League matches. Cole Palmer will be the key man to how Chelsea play under Rosenior, and we’re taking a punt on him getting a goal here. Fulham have only kept one clean sheet in their last four at home, and conceded five against Man City and two against Crystal Palace and Liverpool. The Chelsea forward line will get chances, and Palmer can be in the thick of the action. The new manager bounce will come at a good time for Chelsea, and they can scrape all three points in this one.
Manchester City have dropped points in their last two matches to leave them six points behind Arsenal at the top of the league. They cannot afford many more slip-ups if they are to hunt The Gunners down. Injuries are a problem for this one, with a number of defenders missing, including Stones, Dias and Gvardiol. Haaland is also on a dry spell, and Foden’s goals have dried up. It’s no goal in three matches for Haaland, and nine in five for Foden. Brighton got their first win in seven matches against Burnley last time out, but they’re another team who are having a real mixed bag of results this season. It is hard to see them troubling City in what is a must-win game for the home side.
Burnley are not getting any better in their fight for survival, but they did pick up draws against Everton and Bournemouth over the Christmas period. However, they are struggling in front of goal, failing to find the net in four of their last six home matches. It is the start of a new dawn for Manchester United, and we know how the new manager bounce usually has a positive effect on teams. Ruben Amorim has gone, and Darren Fletcher will be taking charge of the side. Bruno Fernandes could make a return to the side after injury, and that would be a huge boost to Fletcher.
Newcastle are still stuck in mid-table in the Premier League, but all the teams are so close that any run of wins will propel them up the league. Eddie Howe’s side have won their last two matches against Crystal Palace and Burnley and will expect to make it three from three at home to Leeds. However, Leeds are on a decent run themselves, failing to taste defeat in their last seven matches. Five of those games have finished draws though, but there have been impressive away performances against Liverpool, Sunderland and Brentford in that run. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the catalyst for those positive results and he was unlucky not to get the winner at Anfield recently. Newcastle are rotating their forward players to good effect and they’re strong at home. They’ve won nine and drawn two in their last 11 home matches, and in their last nine home games, they’ve scored two goals in each.
