Today’s ITV Racing Tips – Easter Monday

2:35 Plumpton – EDWARDSTONE

Veteran EDWARDSTONE (3/1) isn’t the same force nowadays, while a return to this trip is most probably on the sharp side. However, Alan King’s former Grade One winner could take some beating nonetheless despite having to give away weight to his four rivals.

The Kayf Tara gelding returned to winning ways at Kempton in January, beating Master Chewy in the Silviniaco Conti, and he shaped as if the trip just stretched him over the stiff Ascot track when fourth behind Jonbon in the Ascot Chase.

He probably wants further than this, but his ability to handle sharper tracks is a valuable asset around here, and his rivals all have something to prove or need to find plenty of improvement to topple him. While he’s not as good as he was in his prime, he is still capable of holding his own in better company than this and he’ll take some beating if anywhere near the top of his game.

2:55 Kempton – MILITARY ACADEMY (EW)

It can often pay to side with proven ability to handle all-weather surfaces, and MILITARY ACADEMY (EW) 14/1 gets a tentative vote to regain winning ways.

The Fastnet Rock gelding hasn’t won since scoring at Listed company here over a longer trip back in November 2024 when trained by the Gosdens. But he largely acquitted himself well in defeat last term, including when going close behind the admirable Hamish at Goodwood in last season’s Tapster Stakes.

He has since joined Jane Chapple-Hyam and again has been running well, going close when beaten less than one length into third two starts ago in the Winter Derby, and he wasn’t ideally placed and raced too keenly here latest when disappointing under an inexperienced rider.

Race-fitness could play a big factor here with all his rivals returning from layoffs and proven on the surface and reunited with Billy Loughnane, he could bounce back to form under much stronger handling and no surprise if he makes his presence felt back in Listed company where he’s likely to boast a fair each-way chance.

3:15 Fairyhouse – EAGLES REIGN (EW)

A chance is taken with EAGLES REIGN (EW) 18/1, who struggled in Listed handicaps towards the end of last season, and the Gleneagles gelding might have been amiss when pulled up at Navan over an extended three miles in December.

Absent for three months, Ross O’Sullivan’s charge posted a much better effort on his reappearance at Naas last month, dropping back in trip and only beaten around three lengths, where a mistake at the last put paid to any lingering chance of victory.

He did win a Listed hurdle race a couple of seasons ago over the minimum trip as well as finish second in the 2024 Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival, so there’s clearly some talent there, although he hasn’t quite lived up to it since. Nevertheless, he is chanced to build on that promising reappearance, and he can give a good account of himself where he can make the frame.

3:30 Kempton – GOBLET OF FIRE

Dual C&D scorer GOBLET OF FIRE (7/1) might be worth chancing on his reappearance back on the flat for top jumps trainer Nicky Henderson, and the Saxon Warrior gelding is still relatively unexposed racing on artificial surfaces.

He has improved markedly for the switch to Seven Barrows from Nigel Tinkler, winning here twice in 2024 as well as tasting victory at Wolverhampton and over hurdles at Southwell. He also won over timber back from a break at Hereford before running third in the Swinton Hurdle, and his last two starts on the flat have yielded a runner-up finish at Goodwood and a win at Wolverhampton.

Not seen since a foray over hurdles at Plumpton last November, he remains well-treated on this mark back on the flat, given his hurdles exploits, and he’s shown he can run well fresh. Proven over course and distance, he can give a good account of himself in a competitive handicap contest, given there’s possibly still more to come from him in this sphere.

3:50 Fairyhouse – THE YELLOW CLAY

The race hadn’t really started in any real earnest when THE YELLOW CLAY (11/2) stumbled and fell three out in the BetMGM Cup Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and Gordon Elliott’s charge is worth another chance.

Winner of his first four starts over hurdles, including a Grade One, the Yeats gelding finished runner-up to The New Lion in the 2025 Turners Novices’ Hurdle before falling at Punchestown, and he looked as good as ever on his return at Navan in November, possibly needing the run.

Things haven’t quite gone to plan since, possibly not getting home over three miles at Leopardstown over Christmas. But he was in the process of running well when coming down at Cheltenham, although it was perhaps too soon to say whether he’d have been involved at the finish.

If that tumble hasn’t dented any confidence, he could be hard to keep out of the frame in this contest and no surprise if he were to regain winning ways at the expense of Storm Heart, who finished third in that Cheltenham contest.

4:05 Kempton – LADY ROXBY

LADY ROXBY (9/4) has hit the crossbar in three of her last four starts since scoring at Beverley last July, most recently when beaten just a neck by Arabian Leopard in a stronger race than this at Newmarket in September.

Michael Herrington’s King Of Change filly also narrowly missed out the time before at Yarmouth, and this represents a step down in class from those previous runs.

Absent for more than six months, she returns off just 2lbs higher, and she proved on her debut for the yard last June that she can go well fresh. She’s thoroughly unexposed on the all-weather, having had just one prior start on an artificial surface and given she looked progressive last term, she could have more to offer this campaign.

4:20 Fairyhouse – FOUND A FIFTY

FOUND A FIFTY (3/1) won this twelve months ago, and Gordon Elliott’s charge can resume winning ways after a couple of lesser efforts in recent outings.

The Solkjaer gelding has won at Navan and Cork this term, both at around two miles, including a defeat of Majborough in the Hilly Way Chase, although that rival comprehensively beat him at Leopardstown during the DRF.

Last of four to James Du Berlais at Navan in February, he pulled up in the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, never travelling and jumping markedly throughout, suggesting something was amiss.

The ground may have been too quick for him at Cheltenham, and this easier surface back up in trip are both positives; while he ought to find this a bit easier than recent tasks. He is 2-3 here – placed on his defeat – and assuming he’s back to his best, he could prove a tough nut to crack.

4:40 Kempton – FINAL NIGHT

Rossa Ryan is 3-3 on FINAL NIGHT (3/1) – all three over C&D – and the pair can combine again for further success.

John Butler’s Muhaarar gelding struck back-to-back victories here in December before going very close in his hat-trick bid when returning from a short break at Newcastle in February. He quickly bounced back from that defeat, though, when getting the better of Atmosphere here last month, scoring by one length.

He’s up another 4lbs for that latest success, but he may not have stopped improving just yet and given his excellent course record under this rider, the pair might be worth sticking with to go in again.

5:00 Fairyhouse – SHECOULDBEANYTHING (EW)

SHECOULDBEANYTHING (EW) 28/1 finished seventh in this contest twelve months ago from 1lb higher, and the Malinas mare could be worth chancing to better that position this time around.

Gordon Elliott’s charge has often run well after a break, and last season’s Galway Plate 3rd was last seen filling the same spot in the Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park in January, although she did finish some twenty lengths off the winner.

She had chased home Dinoblue here the time before and the form of the Theystes looks fairly solid with the winner going on to finish fifth in a Grade One at Cheltenham, while the fourth has filled the same spot since in a Grade Three here on their next start.

Whether she has the stamina for this trip is open to question as she did shape twelve months ago in this as if the trip stretched her; but 1lb lower now and with ground possibly not quite as testing as it was last year she could give a good account of herself again off this slightly lower mark and given she’s generally a consistent performer she may well make the frame at big odds.
