The onus is on Sporting to establish an advantage in Lisbon, but they face a formidable Arsenal side who are favourites to progress. Arsenal are built on a solid defensive foundation – no team has conceded a lower xGA total than the Gunners’ 7.54 in this season’s Champions League.
Arsenal are capable of keeping contests tight, particularly in the first leg of a knockout tie away from home. This was evident against Bayer Leverkusen in the previous round, where they fell behind before a late penalty secured a 1-1 draw.
Sporting, however, have demonstrated they can trouble top opposition at the Alvalade. They have scored in all five of their Champions League home fixtures this season and averaged 2.8 goals per game at home in Europe. Both teams have scored in four of those five encounters. Given their need to take a positive result to London, Sporting are expected to commit forward and test an Arsenal defence that has conceded in four of their last six Champions League matches.
