Today’s ITV Racing Tips – Aintree Day 2

1:45 Aintree – HOT FUSS

William Hill Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m4f

HOT FUSS (7/1) bounced back from a poor effort at Kelso on his penultimate start to finish runner-up in the Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festival, and Tom Dascombe’s charge can go one better.

A winner at Windsor over two miles, the Calyx gelding was having his first try over the longer trip at the Festival, leading over the final obstacle but just finding himself outstayed up the hill by the eventual winner, although he wasn’t helped by the winner coming across him and carrying him to his right, possibly intimidating him.

He’s up 3lbs for that, but the form of his Windsor win has been franked by the runner-up, who won the County Hurdle and unexposed at this distance, he can give another good account.

2:20 Aintree – SALVER

William Hill Mildmay Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m1f

SALVER (4/1) can go a couple of places better here than he did at Cheltenham when third to Kitzbuhel in the Brown Advisory, beaten three lengths.

Gary and Josh Moore’s Motivator gelding had won two of his previous three starts, scoring in Grade Two company at Sandown and Windsor either side of finishing fourth to Kitzbuhel at Kempton. His jumping wasn’t particularly fluent that day over Kempton’s stiff fences, which cost him ground, and he couldn’t quite get on terms, so to finish as close as he did was an excellent effort.

His Cheltenham effort was excellent despite not getting to the front pair, and he was perhaps just given too much to do. Back on a flatter track in this smaller field might suit, and while softer ground might be more to his liking, he does act on this quicker ground, and another big run wouldn’t come as a surprise.

2:55 Aintree – SOBER GLORY

ThatPrizeGuy Top Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m½f

SOBER GLORY (8/13) had won three of his four starts over hurdles prior to raising his game considerably in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, finding only Old Park Star too good, although things may have been different had he jumped the last cleanly.

Despite that mistake and also colliding with the rail on the run-in, he was only beaten by a little over one length, and the Mount Nelson gelding can make amends now.

His previous two wins prior to the festival came at Newbury, where he won by an aggregate 40 lengths on vastly contrasting ground, so the underfoot conditions shouldn’t present any issue, and there’s surely better to come from him.

3:30 Aintree – GIDLEIGH PARK

JCB Melling Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m4f

GIDLEIGH PARK (8/1) could be worth giving another chance, having run poorly behind Jonbon in the Clarence House at Ascot, and Harry Fry’s charge has been given time to recover from that lesser run, where his jockey reported the Walk In The Park gelding to have run flat.

A Grade Two winner over fences last term, he chased home Impaire Et Passe here in the Manifesto on his final start, and his reappearance saw him find only Jango Baie too good in the 1965 Chase at Ascot, perhaps just finding his stamina stretched.

He’s one who clearly goes well fresh, and he’s still relatively unexposed over fences after just five runs. Forgiven his last effort, where he clearly wasn’t at his best, he’s given another chance to show what he is capable of over this slightly less demanding trip and flatter track over which he ran well twelve months ago.

4:05 Aintree – ILE ATLANTIQUE

Randox Topham Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m5f

ILE ATLANTIQUE (10/1) can bounce back from his lesser effort at Leopardstown latest during the DRF, and Willie Mullins’ charge could go close here.

A dual winner over fences last term, he struggled in Grade One company thereafter, but returned this term with highly creditable efforts in defeat at Naas and Tramore prior to this Leopardstown effort, where he was in contention before a mistake three out halted any momentum.

His previous Tramore run, when second to Heart Wood, looks much better now, given that one went on to win the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and may well further boost the form earlier in the afternoon.

A repeat of that effort can see him competitive again, assuming he takes to the Grand National fences, although his master trainer knows what it takes to win this, so the presence of the Coastal Path gelding here suggests he’s up to the task of mounting a bold bid.

4:40 Aintree – NO DRAMA THIS END

Oddschecker Sefton Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 3m½f

NO DRAMA THIS END (4/1) lost his race at the start of the Turners Novices’ Hurdle, and a line is easily drawn through that effort where Paul Nicholls’ charge was caught out of position when the tapes went up and found himself too far back to mount any sort of challenge.

Harry Cobden wasn’t hard on the Walk In The Park gelding, who had been mightily impressive in notching up a hat-trick of victories prior to Cheltenham, including in the Challow Hurdle at Newbury, which proved he could handle quicker ground despite more impressive successes in the mud at Cheltenham and Sandown.

Forgiven his Cheltenham no-show, he can make amends here with Sam Twiston-Davies taking over in the saddle as he goes up in trip, which could bring about further improvement and no surprise if he were to regain the winning thread.
