Today’s ITV Racing Tips

3:45 Musselburgh – ADONIUS

Only five runners in the TV opener, three of which make their racecourse debut so ADONIUS looks the way to go having won on his own debut eight days ago over C&D and the Soldier’s Call gelding can quickly double up.

Rebecca Menzies’ charge made a good impression with that victory, travelling strongly before readily pulling clear and looking a decent prospect in the process. He should have more to offer and he can certainly improve for the experience.

He does have to concede plenty of weight to this field, upwards of 5lbs; but given the way he won first time up he could prove a tough nut to crack if building on that debut promise.

3:55 Leopardstown – GERYON (EW)

GERYON (EW) could prove the answer here for Ger Lyons and the Lope De Vega colt can make a winning return to action.

A debut winner at the Curragh last August, he hit the crossbar on successive outings, both in Group Two company and the latter over one mile. A return to seven furlongs will present no issue and his second to Constitution River in August came over this distance on quicker ground.

His latest effort came on softer ground where he was beaten around three lengths by one which has since gone on to win a Group One. He now sports a tongue-tie which could help eke out some improvement and while he does need to find some progress on his return to action he should give the Ballydoyle contingent something to think about and he could make the frame assuming fitness isn’t an issue.

4:15 Musselburgh – JUST A GAMBLER (EW)

JUST A GAMBLER (EW) made a winning return to action at Chelmsford last month, beating Tewksbury by a head on his handicap debut and the St Mark’s Basilica gelding ran well in defeat at Kempton two weeks later where he finished a close third.

Beaten just over one length by reopposing Blues And Royals there, he found himself briefly outpaced two furlongs out and unable to quicken he kept on at one pace. That was a decent effort nonetheless and he gets a pull at the weights with Michael Bell’s rival, while the application of cheekpieces could produce some improvement.

He’s only had two starts on turf so there could be a bigger effort to come from him returning to this surface and no surprise to see him in the frame in a competitive handicap.

4:25 Leopardstown – BLACK CAVIAR GOLD

BLACK CAVIAR GOLD already has a win over a few of these and Paddy Twomey’s charge can continue her improvement this term where the Havana Grey filly can prove herself a very smart sort.

A winner of her last two starts which includes a Group Three at the Curragh in September, beating Pivotal Attack, she showed this trip to be no issue and any softening of the ground will be in her favour.

The third and fourth home in that race have won since, while the fifth horse has placed in a Group Three; assuming she’s fit enough on her reappearance then she could post a big run for her shrewd handler especially if she progresses further this term.

4:45 Musselburgh – APPLESANDPEARS

Lightly-raced APPLESANDPEARS can make a winning reappearance if fit to go after five months off the track.

Ed Bethell’s charge showed progressive form last term, finishing runner-up on her racecourse debut on turf at Leicester before registering back-to-back victories on the all-weather at Chelmsford and Newcastle respectively.

The Havana Gold filly now steps into the handicap ranks where an opening mark of 84 may not prove too prohibitive, while Jack Callan takes a handy 5lbs off his back to further boost his claims. Stepping up to one mile could unlock another level of improvement and she can certainly make her presence felt taking on more exposed rivals.

4:55 Leopardstown – PIERRE BONNARD

PIERRE BONNARD ought to be tough to beat on his reappearance and Aidan O’Brien’s Camelot colt can make a winning reappearance here.

Beaten on his debut, he has won all three starts since, including a Group One at Saint Cloud when last seen, scoring by two lengths in pretty testing ground so any rain that might fall won’t present an issue. However he had won the time before on much quicker ground so underfoot conditions are unlikely to faze him.

Already touted as one of the yard’s main Derby candidates, he does carry a penalty for that G1 victory. However, he could prove a class above these rivals and he’s the choice of Ryan Moore from the Ballydoyle quartet which could prove a tip in itself.

Assuming fitness isn’t an issue then he sets a stiff standard for the remainder and ought to prove a tough nut to crack.

5:15 Musselburgh – SEA FORCE

William Haggas doesn’t send many runners this far north, but he boasts a near 35% strike-rate when he does and SEA FORCE can make a winning reappearance.

The Sea The Stars gelding won twice last term, scoring at Nottingham in June and rounding off his campaign with victory at Yarmouth on his final start, beating Whip Cracker by just over one length. Those wins came on contrasting ground conditions so the conditions here won’t present too much of an issue and a 6lbs rise for that last victory may not prove harsh.

Fitness has to be taken on trust in the wake of 207 days off, but with trip and ground both no issue he’s fancied to go close for his top yard.

5:25 Leopardstown – MADBADANDDANGEROUS

It is interesting that Oisin Murphy is riding at Leopardstown on Sunday and the champion jockey can make the trip worthwhile with victory on MADBADANDDANGEROUS for trainer Noel Meade.

The Coulsty gelding has had just three career starts, scoring at Naas last September at the second attempt and running well in defeat either side, most recently third behind Alphecca back at Naas in October.

He had beaten the same horse the time before and the form was boosted further when Alphecca struck again for the second time at Killarney.

Now stepping up in trip for his handicap debut, he does have fitness to prove; however his stable is in good form and a big performance wouldn’t shock with this additional yardage likely to suit.

5:45 Musselburgh – HUMBLE SPARK (EW)

HUMBLE SPARK (EW) remains well-treated on the pick of his form and Jim Goldie’s charge is chanced to resume winning ways now equipped with headgear for the first time.

The Acclamation gelding won twice in the early months of last year, both on the all-weather, including one off a higher mark than this. He also found one too good at Haydock last May off 6lbs higher than his current rating.

Kept busy over the winter on the all-weather, he ran his best race of the year to date when beaten three lengths by Team Player over slightly further last Saturday where the softer ground might not have suited him. However, back on a sounder surface he could do better especially now he’s been fitted with cheekpieces.

Dropping back to this trip won’t be an issue and it wouldn’t come as a huge shock if he were to go close for a yard that rarely leaves here without a winner.

6:15 Musselburgh – BENACRE (EW)

BENACRE (EW) struck at Newcastle a few starts back, scoring off this mark when defeating The Dragon King by a head and Charlie Johnston’s charge can bounce back from a couple of lesser efforts since.

Sixth at Wolverhampton on his next outing, the Australia gelding beat only one home latest back at Newcastle. He is given another chance however returning to turf having finished runner-up on his last turf start at Chester last September behind Mayday Malone.

He’s made the frame here in the past and he’s well-handicapped if coming back to his best given he was 92-rated at his peak and has won off marks as high as 86. Quicker ground on turf suits fine and assuming there’s not too much rain around then he could make a bold bid back on the grass.

6:45 Musselburgh – RIGHT AND EXACT

RIGHT AND EXACT takes on more exposed rivals on his handicap debut; while Declan Carroll’s charge has to concede weight, he is open to further progress and the Oasis Dream gelding can resume winning ways on his seasonal debut.

A debut winner at Catterick last June, he has hit the crossbar on both subsequent starts on the all-weather, latest finding Rapper’s Delight too strong at Southwell back in September.

He’s only a four-year-old with three starts under his belt so there’s reason to suspect he could have more to offer and his opening mark of 79 on his handicap debut could prove fair although Zak Wheatley can take off a handy 3lbs. His draw perhaps isn’t ideal, but if he’s fit to do himself any justice on his return to action then he can go close.
