What is handicap betting on football? See our complete guide below and get today’s football handicap betting tips and predictions too. Our tipsters have looked through the fixtures and found some handicap bets for today.
What is handicap betting?
In football, there are two types of handicap betting, Asian Handicap, and the standard Handicap. For these betting tips, we’re focusing on the standard handicap.
Handicap betting is where the teams playing are given a theoretical head start or negative starting goals before a match kicks-off. This is designed to even up the match for betting. For example, Chelsea have a home match against Sheffield United in the
Premier League, and Chelsea’s odds to win are 1/10. The bookies are making them very strong favorites, so instead of you betting £10 on Chelsea just to win £1, you could use the handicap betting market instead.
In the handicap betting odds, you could bet on Chelsea (-2 handicap) at odds of 6/4. This means that Chelsea effectively start the match on -2 goals. So for your bet to be a winner, Chelsea would need to overcome that handicap and win the match by three goals or more. You could also bet on the match to be a draw (-2 handicap), and this bet would be a winner if Chelsea win by exactly 2 goals, effectively canceling out the handicap.
If Chelsea win the match 3-0 then taking into account the -2 handicap, the bet would be settled as a winner because Chelsea have won 1-0, the first two goals cancelled out the -2 handicap, and the third goal means they scored more than the handicap.
How to place a football handicap bet
Once you understand handicap betting, it will mean you can bet on a wider range of matches because previously, you’d be unlikely to bet on a match result in a fixture such as Liverpool vs Norwich City, which is likely to be really one-sided, but if you have the option to bet on Liverpool on the handicap market then you’ll be able to place a bet at much better odds and have the enjoyment of watching Liverpool chase down the handicap target. e.g. you bet on Liverpool to win (-3 handicap) meaning you need Liverpool to win by four or more goals for it to be a winner.

Betting on football handicaps in an accumulator
Just like with normal
