Liverpool & Newcastle battle it out for Philips’ signature
Drastically failing to dethrone Rodri at the heart of Manchester City’s midfield since arriving from Leeds in a £45million deal 16 months ago, it is no secret that Phillips is expected to leave the Etihad when the January transfer window opens up. With many critical of his decision to stay put in the blue half of Manchester over the summer, Phillips himself appears to have accepted that his future lies elsewhere. While Phillips might have made a brief second-half cameo appearance as Man City stormed their way to a 6-1 romp against Bournemouth last weekend, the 27-year-old has played just 20 minutes of domestic action since the end of September. With reports continuing to suggest that Phillips will be on his way out of the Etihad once the January transfer window opens up, it has been suggested that both Liverpool and Newcastle have made their intentions clear.Champions League Special: 4/1 Arsenal vs Sevilla Bet Builder TipLiverpool and Newcastle involved in four-way Kalvin Phillips January transfer battle

Guardiola discusses Phillips’ future at the Etihad
With many left shocked last year as Pep Guardiola decided to splash £45million on the 30-cap England international, there were plenty of question marks over where Phillips would fit in at Manchester City. Making just 12 Premier League appearances throughout the whole of last season, Phillips should be desperate to kick-start his career away from the Etihad. While Guardiola might have Phillips as ‘exceptional’ earlier in the week, the former Barcelona boss has stated why the ex-Leeds star has failed to break into his first-team plans at the Etihad.“Kalvin, exceptional in many things. Why he doesn’t play? Rodri, key for us.”
“Never, ever makes one action against mates that play, or a bad face, training bad. I’d love to give him as much minutes as possible.”
