A huge night awaits Rangers under the lights of Ibrox in the west end of Glasgow as the blue side of the city are looking for another night to remember to extinguish that night to forget last Tuesday in Belgium. It’s also worth noting 3/4 of those knockout fixtures were won thanks to a notable result at home:

  • Braga and RBL 3-1
And yet again a minimum of a 2-goal victory is required for extra time and a 3-goal victory is required for progress to the playoff round of the UCL. The home atmosphere will be crucial here but is it going to be too much too soon for Van Bronckhorsts men? The sales of Bassey (£19m) and Aribo (£6m) are big money but are the replacements enough to land them the guaranteed €16.8m just for making the UCL groups? A defeat would again leave Rangers in the same position as 12 months ago where defeat to Malmo saw them bag a win in the playoff and a stop in the Europa League groups, €3.6m worse off. The financial gulf is great and knowing the green side of Glasgow are guaranteed the former piles pressure on the hosts to deliver a victory here to put them 3 hours away from a first group stage appearance since 2010.

I think goals are inevitable tonight. Rangers need 2 minimum to force extra time, and 3 for a win and USG looked like a massive threat in the first leg and unlucky not to get more than 2 goals in the home leg. With a lot at stake, Rangers must force themselves on the visitors and pressure them whilst the visitors will look to steal a march on the counter and kill of the Glasgow UCL dream. Stat:
  • USG romped their league and notably scored more goals on the road (46) than at home (32), averaging 2.29 across the campaign.
  • All 4 home UEL knockout ties last season for Rangers landed BTS & O2.5, as did their home UCL defeat to Malmo.

Rangers picked up 4 cards in Belgium last week and 4 against Livingston in their first game of the season, some of that team were rested at the weekend where they picked up no cards. Given the magnitude of the game and the likelihood of USG hanging on or trying to control the game again, I sense there will be at least 2 or more cards to come in such a crucial game.

His chance creation is crucial and I expect him to be heavily involved in most attacking plays this evening. Stat
