Knowing that they face a real uphill battle in their bid to claim a crucial top-four finish this season, it is no secret that Antony has come under a huge amount of scrutiny since arriving at Old Trafford.

While the Red Devils might have broken the bank last summer as they welcomed Antony to Manchester for a fee of £82million, the Brazilian international has drastically struggled to find any kind of stability.

With the former Ajax ace still waiting to open his Premier League account this season, the 23-year-old has also registered just four top-flight goals in his 32 top-flight appearances.

However, while many around Old Trafford might be starting to question the staggering amount that they spent on the 16-cap international last summer, ten Hag has been vocal in his backing of Antony.

Ten Hag brands Antony as a ‘fighter’

Although fans around the red half of Manchester might be calling for Antony to have another stint out of the public eye, ten Hag has made it crystal clear that the Brazilian has a key role to play this season.

Brought to Old Trafford under ten Hag’s guidance, the Dutch tactician has been quick to publicly defend his misfiring attacker.

Although Antony might still be waiting to justify the £82million that they spent on him last summer, ten Hag has branded his former Ajax protege as a ‘fighter’ and believes that the 23-year-old has the mental resolve to overcome his recent struggles.

Facing what is a crucial trip to Craven Cottage on Saturday lunchtime when they meet Fulham, ten Hag will have plenty of pressure on his shoulders over how he can get the best out of Antony.
