England welcome Japan to Wembley following their 1-1 draw with Uruguay last time out. Japan come in to this one off the back of a 0-1 victory over Scotland at Hampden on Saturday.

England will be keen to make a statement in their penultimate game ahead of the World Cup in June. They have won eight of their last 10 matches, drawing one and losing one in that time.

Japan weren’t overly impressive against Scotland, but they did come away from Glasgow with a narrow victory. They have won seven of their last 10, drawing two and losing one. This is their last outing before taking on Holland in Group F of the World Cup.

Key Stats — England vs Japan

  • England have won eight of their last 10 matches and conceded only four goals in that run, keeping eight clean sheets
  • Harry Kane has scored 48 goals in 40 competitive appearances this season and averaged exactly two shots on target per game in England’s World Cup qualifying campaign
  • Anthony Gordon has scored 17 goals in all competitions for Newcastle this season and averaged just under one shot on target per game in England’s qualifying campaign
  • Japan beat Scotland 1-0 at Hampden on Saturday but struggled to break down their defence
  • Japan have scored in eight of their last 10 matches but face an England side that has kept eight clean sheets in their last 10
  • England drew 1-1 with Uruguay in their previous World Cup warm-up match

England Form and Match Preview

England will be keen to make a statement in their penultimate game ahead of the World Cup in June. They have won eight of their last 10 matches, drawing one and losing one in that time.

After the 1-1 draw with Uruguay, Thomas Tuchel will be looking for a sharper, more clinical display from his side tonight. With the World Cup squad selection imminent, every player in the squad will be pushing for a starting berth and motivated to impress — which should translate into an England performance with real intensity and purpose against a Japan side who were unconvincing against Scotland at the weekend.

Japan Form and Match Preview

Japan weren’t overly impressive against Scotland, but they did come away from Glasgow with a narrow victory. They have won seven of their last 10, drawing two and losing one. This is their last outing before taking on Holland in Group F of the World Cup.

Japan’s 1-0 win at Hampden was a functional result rather than a convincing one, and they face a significantly tougher challenge tonight at Wembley. With this their final preparation match before the World Cup, their manager will be balancing the need for a positive result against the importance of protecting key players ahead of the tournament. England’s defensive record under Tuchel — just four goals conceded in their last 10 — makes this a difficult evening for a Japan side that struggled to find the net against Scotland.

England vs Japan Betting Tips

Best Bet Builder Tip — England to Win — 11/20

I can’t see past an England win here. Thomas Tuchel will be keen for his side to impress here after a 1-1 draw with Uruguay last time out, and I expect them to turn it on here against Japan. There is so much quality in this England squad, and I expect we will see a good number of them on Tuesday evening, as the manager decides his strongest 26 man squad for the summer. As I said previously, Japan were no great shakes against Scotland, despite the win, and I think England will win this one fairly comfortably.

Both Teams to Score – No — 10/11

I don’t think Japan will get themselves on the scoresheet here. In that game against Scotland, they struggled to break down a fairly resolute defence, and of course they only managed one goal. They have scored in eight of their last 10, but England have only conceded four in their last 10, keeping eight clean sheets in the process. The Three Lions haven’t conceded a lot of goals under manager Thomas Tuchel, and I think both teams not to score is a very solid bet here at odds of 10/11.

Harry Kane Over 0.5 Shots on Target — 1/3

Taking Harry Kane for one or more shots on target is always an extremely safe bet. The Bayern Munich man has bagged 48 goals in 40 competitive appearances so far this season, which is an incredible return. He has scored 31 in 26 in the Bundesliga, 10 in nine in the Champions League, six in four in the DFB Pokal and one in one in the DFL Super Cup. For England, he scored eight goals in eight World Cup qualifying matches, with a total of 29 shots, 16 of which were on target, an average of exactly two per game. I think he’s nailed on to have at least one shot on target here.

Alternative Bet — Harry Kane to Score (13/10)

Although it’s a friendly, 13/10 is fantastic odds for Harry Kane to score. Given his goal return this season, there’s a very strong chance he will score again here. At odds of 13/10, taking him for a goal instead of a shot on target increases the odds of this bet builder to just shy of 13/1 with BetMGM.

Anthony Gordon Over 0.5 Shots on Target — 1/1

The second player I’m backing for a shot on target is Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon. Odds of 1/1 is very generous for Gordon to have at least one shot on target, given he has scored 17 goals in all competitions for Newcastle this season. He has six in 25 in the Premier League, one in three in the FA Cup, and 10 in 12 in the Champions League. For England, he scored one in five throughout their qualification campaign. In those five outings, he had four shots on target, an average of just under one per game. I think evens is good odds for Gordon to have one or more shots on target in this one.
