Affectionately known as the ‘Bonus King’, Betfred is one of the most recognisable names in the sports betting world, with betting available online and in shops throughout the country.
Betfred has been in business since 1968 so it knows a thing or two about sports betting, and offers a wide range of betting markets covering many different popular sports, not just horse racing.
But fans of horse racing should certainly consider an account with Betfred, as they consistently feature well and rank highly in any list of bookmakers for horse racing betting.
Betfred’s horse racing betting odds are amongst the best on offer, and their racecard coverage is top-notch, borrowing heavily from the Racing Post. Best odds guaranteed is a big draw for punters, allowing them to take a price on a selection and get paid at the longer odds if the selection returns at a bigger price and is available on UK and Irish horse racing from 8am.
Other popular horse racing betting markets are available, including ‘lengthen your odds’ and forecast/tricast betting. Selections can also be ‘insured’ to finish in the frame, which returns stakes if a horse fails to win but fills the places.
Regular bonuses for existing customers and a strong new customer offer backed by quick withdrawal times and numerous funding methods make Betfred one of the best bookmakers for betting on horse racing.
Regular existing customer promotions include:
- Extra places on competitive handicaps
- Odds boosts on featured races
- Money back if beaten by a head
- Acca insurance on racing multiples
- Free bet clubs for regular punters
Betfred’s mobile app offers full functionality, including live streaming, quick bet placement, and notifications for results and offers.

- Best Odds Guaranteed: Yes, on UK and Irish racing from 9am
- Extra Places: Yes, on selected races

- Origin: Irish bookmaker with a strong UK presence
Boylesports is an Irish bookmaker that has expanded successfully into the UK market. The company provides strong horse racing coverage with competitive odds and regular promotions, particularly around Irish racing and major festivals.
Best Odds Guaranteed covers UK and Irish racing from 9am, matching William Hill’s timing. The bookmaker applies BOG consistently across singles and multiples with no maximum payout restrictions.
Boylesports’ £40 welcome offer is among the strongest available, matched only by SBK and William Hill. This provides excellent starting value for new customers looking to build a betting bank.
The bookmaker offers regular extra places on competitive handicaps, particularly during major festivals. Boylesports also runs money back specials if your horse finishes 2nd or 2nd to the favourite, adding downside protection to bets.
Live streaming covers UK and Irish racing with good quality video and audio commentary. The mobile app integrates streaming seamlessly, allowing you to watch and bet simultaneously.
The Cheltenham Festival is a major focus for Boylesports given its Irish heritage. The bookmaker provides extensive ante-post markets months in advance and festival-specific promotions, including:
- Enhanced odds on featured races
- Non-Runner No Bet on selected championship races
- Acca insurance across the four days
- Extra places on competitive handicaps
- Daily free bet offers for existing customers with their BOYLE Sports Destination Cheltenham offer
Boylesports’ racecards include essential form data without overwhelming detail, making them accessible for casual punters while providing enough information for serious form students. The platform highlights in-form trainers and jockeys.
The bookmaker also offers betting on Irish point-to-points, a niche market not covered by most UK bookmakers.
SBK – Top Horse Racing Bookies for Betting on Singles
- Welcome Offer: Bet £10 get £40 in Free Bets
- Minimum Odds: 2/5 (1.4)
- Best Odds Guaranteed: Yes, on UK and Irish racing
- Extra Places: Yes, on selected races
- Live Streaming: Yes, UK and Irish racing
- Special Features: Very good odds, app-only platform
SBK (Smarkets Bookmaker) operates as an app-only platform, offering competitive odds powered by exchange-style pricing but with the convenience of traditional fixed-odds betting. The sharp pricing makes SBK attractive for serious punters.
Best Odds Guaranteed applies to UK and Irish racing with no specified time cutoff, suggesting flexible application throughout race days. This covers singles and multiples.
SBK’s £40 welcome offer matches Boylesports and William Hill as one of the strongest available for horse racing punters, providing four £10 free bets to spread across different races or meetings.
The app-only approach initially seems limiting but actually creates a streamlined, focused betting experience. The interface is clean with fast navigation between races and meetings. There’s no bloated website slowing things down.
SBK’s odds are consistently among the best in the market, often matching or exceeding Betfair Exchange prices without commission charges. This is the platform’s major selling point for value-focused punters, and that’s one of the best features, especially if you like to bet on singles in horse racing rather than multiples.
Weekend winnings boosts enhance returns on selected big races, typically major Saturday handicaps or championship races during festivals. These boosts can add 10-25% to winnings.
Live streaming covers UK and Irish racing through the app. Quality is good and streams load quickly even on slower mobile connections.
Racecards provide essential form information, including recent runs, trainer and jockey statistics, and course records. The data is sourced from reliable providers and presented cleanly.
Existing customer offers include:
- Weekend winnings boosts on featured races
- Extra places on competitive handicaps
- Price boosts on selected meetings
- Accumulator insurance on racing multiples

William Hill – Big Hitter in Sports Betting

- Minimum Odds: 1/2 (1.5)
- Best Odds Guaranteed: Yes, from 9am on UK and Irish racing
- Extra Places: Yes, extensive coverage on selected races
- Live Streaming: Yes, via William Hill TV
- Heritage: Operating since 1934
William Hill is one of Britain’s oldest bookmakers, founded in 1934, and remains a leading force in horse racing betting. The company sponsors numerous races and provides comprehensive coverage of UK, Irish, and international meetings.
Best Odds Guaranteed runs from 9am daily on UK and Irish racing, covering singles and multiples. While not as early as bet365 or Betfred’s 8am start, 9am still captures most morning price moves.
William Hill’s £40 welcome offer (four £10 free bets) provides excellent value and flexibility, allowing new customers to spread free bets across multiple races or concentrate them on a single meeting.
William Hill TV streams UK and Irish racing plus international meetings. The platform also offers live cricket, tennis, and other sports, making it valuable for multi-sport bettors.
Racecards are detailed and include Racing Post form data, showing comprehensive statistics on horses, trainers, and jockeys. William Hill often publishes ante-post markets before competitors, giving early access to major festival prices for punters who like to bet weeks or months in advance.
The Build Your Own Racecard feature allows punters to customise which information appears, removing clutter and focusing on personally relevant statistics. You can save preferred layouts for future use.
Flash Odds promotions deliver short-term enhanced prices on selected horses, particularly during major festivals like Cheltenham and Royal Ascot. These appear on the racecard page with clear highlighting.
Existing customer offers include:
- Extra places on competitive handicaps (almost daily)
- Money back specials on selected races
- Acca insurance on racing multiples (refund if one leg loses)
- ITV Racing Price Promise
- Festival-specific promotions during Cheltenham, Aintree and Royal Ascot
William Hill’s mobile app is well-designed with fast navigation between meetings and integrated streaming. Biometric login speeds up access.
Ladbrokes – £30 Welcome Offer after Betting Just £5

- Minimum Odds: 1/2 (1.5)
- Best Odds Guaranteed: Yes, from 10am on UK and Irish racing
- Extra Places: Yes, extensive coverage
- Live Streaming: Yes, UK and Irish racing
- Parent Company: Entain (also owns Coral)
- Heritage: Founded 1886
Ladbrokes, founded in 1886, is one of Britain’s oldest bookmakers with 140 years of racing heritage. As part of the Entain Group, Ladbrokes shares certain features with Coral but maintains its own identity and promotions.
Best Odds Guaranteed runs from 10am on UK and Irish racing, matching Coral’s timing. This is later than bet365, Betfred, Boylesports, and William Hill, but still covers the majority of race-day betting activity. Coverage includes singles and multiples with no restrictions.
Ladbrokes’ £30 welcome offer requires only a £5 qualifying bet, making it accessible for casual punters who prefer lower-stakes betting. The free bets come as 6 x £5 tokens, giving flexibility to spread them across different races.
Ladbrokes offers extensive extra places, particularly on competitive handicaps where fields exceed 12 runners. The bookmaker routinely pays 4 places instead of 3 in 12-15 runner races, and 5 places in 16+ runner handicaps. This appears almost daily on big Saturday cards.
The Build Your Racecard feature allows customisation of displayed information, removing unnecessary data and focusing on what matters to you. You can save trainer and jockey combinations to track throughout the season.
Tote betting is fully integrated, offering all Tote pools including Placepot, Jackpot, and Scoop6. Guaranteed Place Pots of £50,000+ run on major Saturday meetings, ensuring decent returns even if the pool is smaller than expected.
Ladbrokes’ racecards include comprehensive form data and Racing Post ratings. The Grid view shows all runners in a race with key statistics at a glance, making comparisons easier.
Race Day Rewards is a loyalty program giving free spins or bonuses when you place qualifying racing bets. Bet £20 on racing and receive 10 free spins for casino slots. This won’t appeal to racing purists but adds value for customers who enjoy casino games.
Existing customer promotions include:
- Daily racing odds boosts on featured races
- Extra places on selected races (almost daily)
- Money back specials if your horse finishes 2nd
- Festival-specific offers during major meetings
- Tote guaranteed pool promotions

- Best Odds Guaranteed: Yes, from 10am on UK and Irish racing
- Extra Places: Yes, daily coverage
- Live Streaming: Yes, UK and Irish racing
- Parent Company: Entain (also owns Ladbrokes)
- Sponsorship: Cheltenham Gold Cup sponsor
Coral, part of the Entain Group that also includes fellow bookmaker Ladbrokes, have long held a consistently strong horse racing betting product.
Throughout the year, Coral sponsors several high-profile races, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and when it comes to ante-post betting Coral is normally at the forefront of offering ante-post prices for big races.
Coral’s horse racing coverage extends globally, offering a large choice of betting markets from win and place, forecast and tricast to special bets on winning distance and more. Coral’s betting odds are comparable to those available with other bookmakers, and there are always bet boosts and special bets available for those looking for a little more for their money. Best odds guaranteed and live streaming of most, if not all, races come as standard.
For new customers, Coral’s sign-up offer is impressive with an offer of free bets, and their Coral Club provides member-only promotions, competitions and more.

Midnite – One of the Newest Bookies in the UK
- Welcome Offer: Bet £10 get £30 in Free Bets
- Minimum Odds: 1/1 (2.0)
- Best Odds Guaranteed: No (major limitation)
- Extra Places: Limited
- Live Streaming: No (significant drawback)
- Special Features: Social betting, modern app-focused platform
Midnite is a newer betting platform launched in 2021, focusing on mobile-first betting with social features. The company has expanded rapidly and offers competitive odds across sports, including horse racing.
Midnite’s £30 welcome offer matches bet365 and provides strong value for new customers. The free bets come as a single £30 amount rather than split tokens, giving flexibility in how you use it.
However, Midnite does not offer Best Odds Guaranteed on horse racing, which is a significant disadvantage compared to bet365, Betfred, William Hill, Boylesports, SBK, Ladbrokes, and Coral. For serious horse racing punters, BOG is essential and its absence is difficult to overlook.
Midnite also does not offer live streaming of horse racing, requiring punters to watch races via Racing TV, Sky Sports Racing, or free ITV Racing coverage. This is a major limitation compared to competitors.
Despite these drawbacks, Midnite’s odds are competitive and often match or exceed traditional bookmakers. The platform uses sharp pricing similar to SBK.
The app-focused approach creates a clean, fast betting experience. Navigation between races is intuitive and bet placement is quick. The social features allow you to follow other punters and share tips, though this won’t appeal to everyone.
Racecards provide essential form information including recent runs, trainer and jockey stats, and course records. The data presentation is modern and easy to read on mobile screens.
Midnite offers regular price boosts on featured races, enhancing odds on selected horses. These appear clearly highlighted in the racing section.
The platform is best suited to casual punters who value the modern app experience and don’t require Best Odds Guaranteed or live streaming. For serious horse racing bettors, the lack of BOG and streaming are significant limitations for betting on racing.
BetGoodwin – Horse Racing Focused Bookmaker
- Welcome Offer: Bet £10 get £10 Free Bet
- Minimum Odds: 6/4 (2.5) for £10 free bet OR 4-leg acca at 2.5+ per leg for £10 acca free bet
- Best Odds Guaranteed: Yes, from 7am on UK and Irish racing
- Extra Places: Yes, on selected races
- Live Streaming: Limited coverage
- Origin: Operating since 1997
While BetGoodwin might not be as well known as the likes of William Hill, Bet365 or Paddy Power, the firm has been operating since 1997 and is one of the biggest independent bookmakers in the UK.
BetGoodwin’s £10 welcome offer is modest compared to competitors (bet365 £30, Betfred £50, Boylesports £40), but the bookmaker compensates with strong ongoing promotions and excellent BOG timing.
BetGoodwin doesn’t offer the same level of sports betting coverage as other bookmakers, but for those sports they do cover, they do so very well, and horse racing in particular is one of their strongest available offerings.
Covering horse racing from across the globe, BetGoodwin offers a wide range of available betting markets and many of the usual features punters look for in a bookmaker, including best odds guaranteed and bet builders.
Extra places appear on selected competitive handicaps, expanding each-way returns. BetGoodwin typically offers 4 places in 12-15 runner races and 5 places in 16+ runner handicaps during major meetings.
BetGoodwin customers can also take advantage of a variety of promotions centred on horse racing, including bet boosts and free bets when beaten by a long-shot or if a selection loses by a nose, as well as several other concessions. Clearly aiming for a big slice of the horse racing betting market, the name of BetGoodwin should certainly merit consideration for those looking for an alternative to the usual suspects.
Existing customer offers include:
- Money back if your horse finishes 2nd to the favourite
- Free bet if beaten by a nose
- Extra places on major handicaps
- Odds boosts on featured races
- Festival-specific promotions during Cheltenham and Aintree
BetGoodwin operates a telephone betting service, appealing to traditional punters who prefer speaking to someone rather than placing bets online. This is rare among modern bookmakers.
The platform is best suited to punters who prioritise early Best Odds Guaranteed and competitive odds over comprehensive live streaming and large welcome bonuses.
CopyBet – Modern Betting Site
- Welcome Offer: Bet £20 get £20 in Free Bets
- Minimum Odds: 1/1 (2.0)
- Best Odds Guaranteed: No
- Extra Places: Limited
- Live Streaming: Limited
- Special Features: Copy betting from successful tipsters
CopyBet is a newer platform launched in 2020 that focuses on social betting, allowing users to copy bets from successful tipsters. The concept is similar to copy trading in financial markets.
CopyBet’s £20 welcome offer requires a £20 qualifying bet, offering a 1:1 return. This is modest compared to bet365 (£30), Betfred (£50), Boylesports (£40), SBK (£40), and William Hill (£40).
The platform does not offer Best Odds Guaranteed on horse racing, which is a significant disadvantage for serious punters. BOG is standard among major competitors and its absence limits CopyBet’s appeal for regular horse racing betting.
Live streaming is limited, with selected UK and Irish races available but not comprehensive coverage. This is another limitation compared to bet365, William Hill, or Betfred.
The copy betting feature is CopyBet’s unique selling point. Users can browse tipsters’ records, see their strike rates and profit/loss, and automatically copy their bets. This appeals to casual punters who don’t want to spend time studying form.
However, copying others’ bets doesn’t guarantee success. Tipster records can be misleading if based on small sample sizes, and past performance doesn’t guarantee future results.
CopyBet’s odds are competitive on major races but may not match SBK or BetGoodwin on smaller meetings. The platform covers UK, Irish, and selected international racing.
Racecards provide basic form information suitable for casual punters. Detailed statistics are limited compared to platforms using Racing Post or Timeform data.
The mobile app is modern and well-designed, with easy navigation between copy betting and traditional betting modes.
CopyBet is best suited to casual punters interested in the social betting concept rather than serious horse racing bettors who require Best Odds Guaranteed, comprehensive streaming, and detailed form data.
What Makes a Good Horse Racing Betting Site?
The best horse racing betting sites share several key features that serious punters demand:
Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish Racing
Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) protects punters by paying out at the Starting Price if it exceeds the price you took when placing your bet. If you back a horse at 5/1 and it starts at 7/1, you receive winnings at 7/1.
BOG timing varies by bookmaker. Some offer BOG from 8am on race day, others from 10am. The earlier the BOG starts, the more protection you have when taking early prices.
Live Streaming of UK and Irish Racing
Live streaming eliminates the need for Racing TV or Sky Sports Racing subscriptions. The best horse racing betting sites stream all UK and Irish meetings directly through their platforms and apps.
Streaming requires a funded account. Most bookmakers require either a positive balance or a bet placed on the race to access the stream. This is standard across the industry.
Comprehensive Racecards with Form Data
Quality racecards provide essential information for informed betting decisions. The best sites integrate data from Racing Post or Timeform, showing:
- Horse form (recent finishing positions)
- Jockey and trainer statistics
- Course and distance records
- Going preferences (firm, good, soft, heavy)
- Weight carried
- Draw position (for flat racing)
- Official Rating
- Betting trends and market moves
This information helps punters assess whether a horse suits the conditions and distance of today’s race.
Wide Range of Betting Markets
Win and each-way bets are standard, but the best horse racing sites offer additional markets:
- Forecast: predict first and second in the correct order
- Tricast: predict first, second, and third in correct order
- Match bets: which of two horses finishes higher
- Winning distance: margin of victory
- Winning favourites: number of favourites winning at a meeting
- Place only: bet on a horse to finish in the places without backing it to win
Extra Places and Enhanced Place Terms
Extra places expand standard each-way betting. Normally in an 8-11 runner race, each-way bets pay 3 places at 1/5 odds. With extra places, the bookmaker might offer 4 places, giving your selection an additional chance to return a profit.
Each-Way Extra (bet365) allows you to customise place terms. You can increase the number of places paid (at reduced odds) or reduce places for enhanced odds.
Ante-Post Markets with Non-Runner No Bet
Ante-post betting on major races like the Cheltenham Festival or Grand National starts months in advance. Prices are generally longer than on-the-day odds, offering potential value.
The risk with ante-post betting is non-runners. If your horse doesn’t run, you traditionally lose your stake. Non-Runner No Bet (NRNB) returns your stake if your selection doesn’t participate, eliminating this risk.
bet365, William Hill and Betfred offer extensive NRNB coverage on major festivals.
Competitive Odds
Odds vary between bookmakers, sometimes significantly. A horse priced at 5/1 with one bookmaker might be 11/2 or even 6/1 elsewhere. Over time, consistently backing at the best available odds increases profits.
Odds comparison sites like Oddschecker show which bookmakers offer the longest prices on each runner. Having accounts with multiple horse racing betting sites allows you to take advantage of the best odds.
Mobile Apps with Full Functionality
Most horse racing bets are now placed via mobile. The best horse racing betting apps provide:
- Fast loading times
- Intuitive navigation between race meetings
- Integrated live streaming
- Quick bet placement
- In-play betting during races
- Notifications for results and offers
- Biometric login (fingerprint/face ID)
Apps should replicate the full desktop experience without sacrificing features. Betfred, bet365, William Hill, and Paddy Power all offer excellent horse racing apps.
Regular Promotions for Existing Customers
Welcome offers attract new customers, but ongoing promotions retain them. The best horse racing betting sites provide:
- Money back as free bet if your horse finishes 2nd (or 2nd to favourite)
- Enhanced odds on selected races
- Acca insurance (refund if one leg loses)
- Loyalty programs with exclusive benefits
- Price boosts on major meetings
- Extra places on competitive handicaps
Horse Racing Betting Markets Explained
There are plenty of different ways to bet on horse racing and we have listed the most popular markets below. These are all available with all the best horse racing betting sites we have featured on this page.
Win Bet
The simplest market: your horse must win the race. If you back a horse at 5/1 with a £10 stake and it wins, you receive £50 profit plus your £10 stake returned, totalling £60.
Each-Way Bet
An each-way bet is two bets: one for your horse to win, one for it to place (finish in the top positions). Each-way terms vary by race:
- 5-7 runners: 2 places paid at 1/4 odds
- 8-11 runners: 3 places paid at 1/5 odds
- 12-15 runners: 3 places paid at 1/4 odds
- 16+ runners (handicaps): 4 places paid at 1/4 odds
Example: £10 each-way on a 5/1 horse costs £20 (£10 win + £10 place). If it wins, you collect both win and place returns. If it places 2nd-4th, you collect only the place portion at 1/4 odds (5/4).
Extra places extend standard terms, often paying 4 places in 12-15 runner races or 5 places in 16+ runner handicaps.
Forecast
Predict the first and second horses in correct order. A £10 straight forecast returns dividends based on the Computer Straight Forecast (CSF) odds.
A reverse forecast covers both possible orders (Horse A 1st, Horse B 2nd AND Horse B 1st, Horse A 2nd), costing double the stake.
Tricast
Predict the first three horses in correct order. A £10 tricast returns CSF tricast dividend if successful.
A combination tricast covers all possible finishing orders of your three selections, costing significantly more (six times the unit stake for three horses).
Accumulator (Multiple)
Combine selections from different races into one bet. All selections must win for the bet to succeed. Odds multiply together, creating potentially large returns from small stakes.
Example: Four horses at 3/1, 2/1, 5/2, and 4/1 in an accumulator creates combined odds of approximately 209/1. A £5 stake returns £1,045 profit if all four win.
Accumulators are high-risk, high-reward. One losing selection loses the entire bet.
Place Only
Bet on a horse to finish in the places without backing it to win. Returns are lower than each-way betting but offer a safer option for horses likely to place but unlikely to win.
Match Bet
Choose which of two horses finishes higher in a race. The winner of the match bet is whichever horse finishes ahead, regardless of their actual finishing positions.
Winning Distance
Predict the margin of victory: by a head, by a length, by 2-3 lengths, by 4-5 lengths, etc. These markets offer higher odds but are difficult to predict accurately.
Ante-Post Betting
Bet on major races weeks or months in advance. Ante-post odds are typically longer than on-the-day prices, but carry the risk of non-runners.
Non-Runner No Bet (NRNB) removes this risk, refunding stakes if your selection doesn’t run. Always check whether NRNB applies before placing ante-post bets.
Tote Betting
Pool betting, where all stakes go into a pool, and returns are calculated by dividing the pool among winners after the Tote takes its percentage.
Tote pools include:
- Tote Win
- Tote Place
- Tote Exacta (forecast)
- Tote Trifecta (tricast)

Major UK Horse Racing Festivals
Cheltenham Festival (March)
The pinnacle of National Hunt racing, the Cheltenham Festival runs over four days in mid-March. The meeting features 28 races including:
Cheltenham attracts enormous betting turnover. Bookmakers offer extensive promotions including extra places, enhanced odds, money back specials, and acca insurance.
Best Odds Guaranteed applies across all four days. Non-Runner No Bet is available on selected races from major bookmakers like bet365, Betfred, and Paddy Power.
Grand National Festival at Aintree (April)
The Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world, run over 4m2½f with 30 fences at Aintree in early April.
The Grand National is notoriously difficult to predict due to its distance, stamina requirements, and challenging fences. Fields of 32 runners create long odds and unpredictable results.
Grand National betting begins months in advance with extensive ante-post markets. Non-Runner No Bet is crucial for ante-post bets, given the high number of horses who don’t make the final field.
The meeting includes three days of high-quality racing beyond the Grand National itself.
Royal Ascot (June)
The premier flat racing meeting in the UK, Royal Ascot, runs for five days in mid-June. The meeting combines top-class racing with royal attendance and social prestige.
Bookmakers offer enhanced promotions during Royal Ascot, including extra places, money back specials, and best odds guaranteed across all five days.
Glorious Goodwood (July/August)
Five days of high-quality flat racing in late July/early August. Goodwood’s undulating track creates unique challenges for horses and provides exciting racing.
Featured races include the Sussex Stakes (Group 1 mile) and Goodwood Cup (staying race).
York Ebor Festival (August)
Four days of top-class flat racing featuring the Ebor Handicap, one of the most prestigious and competitive handicaps in the racing calendar.
The Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1 sprint) and Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1 for fillies and mares) are highlights.
