How to Play Online Blackjack

For those that haven’t played before, then we’re going to start at the very beginning – how to play. It’s a relatively simple game to play and we’ve detailed all the things you need to know to get started below…

The Rules

Let’s kick off with the rules. In blackjack you play against the dealer and the aim of the game is to have the closest hand to a total value of 21 without exceeding that number. 21 is known as blackjack and the best hand that can be drawn when dealt two cards.   Each card will have a different value, with the values of each highlighted here:
  • Cards numbered from 2 – 10 are all worth what they say on the playing card.
  • Kings, Queens and Jacks all carry a value of 10.
  • Aces are a bit of a wildcard and can either be valued at one or 11 depending on your hand. A card worth 10 and an Ace is worth 21 and is blackjack

How the Game is Played

Rounds are played relatively quickly in blackjack and it involves the players at the table being dealt two cards as well as the dealer. Cards are dealt face up to players, while one card of the dealers will be face down, one face up.  Players must make their moves before the dealer and on your turn, you can make a number of moves in a bid to get your hand as close to 21 as possible without going bust.

The Player Moves

There are a number of options available for players to make, with the basics being:
  • Hit: This is asking for another card to be dealt into your hand.
  • Stand: You don’t wish to take any further cards and you’re happy with your hand.
  • Double Down: You wish to double your bet. You will also be dealt one further card in this instance.
  • Split: If you have been dealt two cards that carry the same value, you can split these and be dealt two further cards. This will also see you have to double your stake as you’re now playing two separate hands.
You will also find blackjack insurance available if the dealer’s visible card is an Ace or a value of 10. In this instance you can pay for insurance which is essentially betting on the dealer getting blackjack.

The Dealer Moves

Once players have made their moves, then it’s time for the dealer to play. There are also specific rules that the dealer must obey, although these can vary slightly depending on the online casino. However, they will typically involve…
  • If the dealer has blackjack, they win.
  • The dealer must stand on 17 or more and hit on 16 or fewer.
  • If the dealer busts, all players win in the game.

Blackjack Odds

As there are different ways of winning in blackjack, there are also different odds that are given and paid out to the player if they win. The breakdown of these payouts are:
  • Payout if your cards are closest to 21 are 1:1.
  • If you exceed 21 you are bust and lose the bet.
  • Being dealt blackjack will see a payout of 3:2
  • If your cards are the same as the dealer, this is known as push and you will receive your stake back.
You should also be aware there is a house edge in blackjack. This is typically between 0.05% and 0.5% depending on the number of decks of cards being played with, but even at the higher end that’s still one of the lowest house edges in online casino.

Online Blackjack Variants

Above you’ll find the typical odds of a game of blackjack. However, there are different variants that you will find across many different online casino sites such as Play Ojo and Monster Casino. Often these will involve additional rules and bonus games, as well as some exciting payouts too. Among the most popular variants aside from the traditional game, include:
  • Vegas Strip Blackjack
  • Atlantic City Blackjack
  • European Blackjack
  • Blackjack Double Exposure
  • Blackjack Switch
