Spain vs Croatia Prediction
Although Spain come into the first game of Group B as odds-on favourites against a Croatia side that they knocked out of Euro 2020 in the Round of 16, I don’t think that there is much to separate these sides. Having impressively won both of their friendly matches in June, scoring 10 goals and only conceding once, it shows Spain’s quality across the pitch. However, these two wins were against nations sitting 73rd and 164th in the FIFA World Rankings. Facing a much tougher opponent in their final friendly before the tournament, Croatia beat one of the tournament favourites Portugal in Lisbon, lining up with a very strong midfield that includes Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, two individuals that won League titles with Manchester City and Real Madrid this season. Despite beating Croatia in the most recent UEFA Nations League Group A, and knocking them out of the most recent Euros as mentioned above, Spain were unable to win either game within 90 minutes, and had to progress through Penalties in the Nations League and Extra Time in the Euros. Prior to those two knockout games, these sides met twice in the UEFA Nations League, each winning once, and Croatia came out on top in their Group Game at Euro 2016 prior. In my opinion, these sides are currently both of very similar level, and both sides could occupy the top 2 spots of Group B after their 3 Group games.
