Southampton Next Manager Odds: Who will Replace Nathan Jones as Saints Manager?
Suffering a woeful second-half collapse at home against 10-man Wolves last weekend, that result was enough to cost Nathan Jones his job in the St. Mary’s dugout.
While the former Luton boss might have only been appointed as the man to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl back in November, Jones quickly found himself at the heart of a Premier League nightmare.
With Southampton still sat rock-bottom of the table and already priced as low as 3/11 with the SBK welcome offer to lose their top-flight status come May, Jones left St. Mary’s as their shortest-serving boss in the Premier League era.
Losing nine of his 14 matches in charge on a journey that lasted just 95 days, the Saints are already trying to find a new permanent boss to take charge.
Facing what looks set to be a real uphill struggle to extend on their Premier League status in 2023, we have taken a look at the three leading contenders to replace Jones at Southampton.
Jesse Marsch
While Jesse Marsch might have only been sacked by Leeds on February 6th, it appeared that the 49-year-old could be set to make an immediate Premier League return, however Southampton might have made U-turn and things are very much undecided.
Although the one-time RB Leipzig boss might have left Elland Road with Leeds at the heart of their own relegation scrap, Marsch had been installed as a runaway pick to replace Jones on the south coast.
With the Southampton board making it clear that they want to act swiftly in replacing Jones, Marsch remains in England following his exit from Yorkshire and would undoubtedly be keen on jumping back into the hot seat.
Despite the American only being relieved of his duties by Leeds last week, it has been reported that Southampton have been a long-term admirer of Marsch.
Reports suggest that Marsch has been on Saints’ radar for some time due to his experience working in the Red Bull system – something which he has in common with former boss Hasenhuttl.
Jesse Marsch to be appointed the next Southampton manager – Best Odds: 8/1 with William Hill
Steven Gerrard
Although it might appear that Marsch is the leading contender to replace Jones at St. Mary’s, another former Premier League boss has emerged as a viable option.
While Steven Gerrard might have come under a huge amount of scrutiny during the final days of his tenure in charge at Aston Villa, the 42-year-old could be handed a Premier League lifeline by the Southampton hierarchy.
Although the ex-Liverpool icon might have really failed to make any kind of impact on his maiden managerial role among England’s elite, Gerrard did gain plenty of plaudits during his stint at Ibrox.
Ending Rangers’ 10-year wait to lift a domestic crown back in 2021, Gerrard certainly still has plenty of name value – despite his worrying shortcomings while in post at Villa Park.
The former England skipper was sacked by Villa back in October following a 3-0 drumming at the hands of Fulham and having led the Clarets to just a pair of Premier League victories.
Steven Gerrard to be appointed the next Southampton manager – Best Odds: 10/1 with Bet Victor.
Marcelo Gallardo
Although many Southampton fans might be hoping for someone who has legitimate Premier League experience on their CV, the Saints could be looking to go in another direction.
While the likes of Frank Lampard and Nuno Espirito Santo have also been touted as possible options, South American record-breaker Marcelo Gallardo does find himself tipped among the leading contenders to replace Jones.
While the 47-year-old might have also been scouted as a potential option to take over at Elland Road, Southampton could be looking to battle it out in order to snap up Gallardo’s signature.
Despite it being suggested that Gallardo is waiting until the summer to take up a new role after announcing that he will be leaving River Plate, he could be tempted by a lucrative Premier League switch.
Guiding the South American icons to 255 victories during his eight-year stint in charge, the one-time Argentina playmaker also lifted the Copa Libertadores twice, along with three Argentine Cups.
Marcelo Gallardo to be appointed the next Southampton manager – Best Odds: 20/1 with Bet Victor.
