Today’s ITV Racing Tips – All-Weather Champions Day
1:30 Lingfield – COOL MOLLY
COOL MOLLY won here two starts ago, overcoming traffic problems to score by a head. That race threw up a next time winner, and Ollie Sangster’s charge went close to doubling up at Newcastle next time when only beaten a head by Alfa Duplicate.
Also a winner at Chelmsford over the minimum trip, the Cotai Glory filly steps up in distance here, and although 3lbs higher for her latest near-miss and pitched into a stronger grade, she could nevertheless give a good account assuming her stamina holds out over this longer trip.
1:50 Newcastle – AL NAJASHI
AL NAJASHI has won his last four, the latest when readily defying a penalty here in February over further, and it might be worth sticking with the Territories colt while he remains in such a rich vein of form.
Ollie Sangster’s charge has also won at Southwell, Lingfield and Wolverhampton, two of those three coming at this distance, so the return to this trip is of no consequence, and he showed he was progressing rapidly when easily beating Okiru by three lengths despite shouldering a 6lbs penalty latest.
This is much tougher given he’s taking a sizeable step up in grade, while the handicapper has hit him hard, and this higher mark will certainly demand he improves again. However, he’s thriving at present, and he could well be capable of raising his game further.
2:05 Lingfield – DANCE TIME
DANCE TIME was beaten only a half-length by reopposing Shrimp Shady at Wolverhampton last month, but on these revised terms it might be worth chancing David Loughnane’s mare to turn the tables.
A course-winner twelve months ago, the Time Test mare added to her tally last autumn when successful at Southwell and Wolverhampton, and her latest fourth back at Wolverhampton came following a couple of months off. She wasn’t helped by some late interference, but she kept on well and wasn’t beaten far.
Now 2lbs better off with her last-time conqueror, she has the services of a good 5lbs claimer to further ease her burden, while the return to two miles for this outing looks a positive move. She’s a generally consistent sort who should continue to give a good account, and no surprise if she features at the business end.
2:25 Newcastle – STATEIRA
STATEIRA is 2-2 here and the Persian King filly can strike another victory.
Andrew Balding’s charge struck here on the back of four months off when scoring over one mile back in November, although she was a shade disappointing next time at Southwell before readily bouncing back to form over C&D.
She ran out a four-length winner that day, beating Nikki Swango, although the handicapper has reacted harshly, slapping her with a 10lbs rise in the weights. That win did come at this level, however, and there’s suspicion she has more to offer, so every chance she can go in again and maintain her perfect course record.
2:40 Lingfield – SILKY WILKIE
Consistent SILKY WILKIE can resume winning ways, having run well in defeat last time, where plenty went wrong for him, and Karl Burke’s course-winner could go close here with a bit more luck.
The Mehmas gelding has registered wins at Newcastle and Wolverhampton earlier in the year, running well under a penalty four days after his latest victory and most recently when three lengths’ third behind Knebworth back at Wolverhampton, where he found himself outpaced and then met trouble in running before running on well.
That winner has since run well off a higher mark, while the selection is 1lb lower before his rider’s good 5lbs claim is factored in. He’s made the frame here in the past, and he’s won at this level, so another big run wouldn’t surprise.
3:00 Newcastle – BLUE RC
Improving BLUE RC can continue his progress and win again having last been seen running out a ready winner at Southwell on New Years’ Day.
James Tate’s charge struck twice on turf last summer and returned from a break to post successive runner-up efforts before regaining winning ways, latest with a defeat of Two Tempting under this rider.
This will be his first start back after a further three months off, but he handles artificial surfaces well, and he’s yet to finish out of the first two on polytrack or tapeta. A 5lbs rise in the weights for his last victory does demand more, but he’s going the right way and proven fresh, he should be in the mix.
3:15 Lingfield – MY FERMOY
MY FERMOY has won two of his last three starts, most recently when returning from three months off to beat Fierce Fortitude at Wolverhampton and Denis Coakley’s charge can follow up.
The Kodiac gelding found only one too good over C&D in between those wins, beaten one length in a stronger grade race than this when 2lbs out of the weights. The third horse home has won since, while the race-winner made the frame in Listed company next time, so a 4lbs rise in the handicap could well be within his range.
Lightly-raced, he could be one who still has further improvement to come and every chance he can go close here.
3:35 Newcastle – SARAB STAR
SARAB STAR could be worth chancing dropping back to sprint trips, and Jack Channon’s charge could go close.
A debut winner over the trip on turf a couple of seasons back, the Zoustar colt was thrust into the Group Two Mill Reef stakes, failing to beat a rival in heavy ground. He was subsequently absent for almost a year and made up for lost time when scoring at Kempton on his reappearance before finding only the smart Chancellor too strong over the same course and distance.
He regained winning ways at Wolverhampton in November before a further four months off, and he went close on his latest return, beaten a half-length by Mount Athos.
A drop back to six furlongs shouldn’t be any issue, given he’s shown plenty of dash and only 2lbs higher following his latest near-miss, he should be competitive again.
3:50 Lingfield – THE DRAGON KING
THE DRAGON KING was a shade unlucky not to have finished closer at Wolverhampton last time, but with a bit more luck in running, Clive Cox’s charge can regain winning ways.
The Invincible Army gelding was a Wolverhampton winner back in November and subsequently went close on his reappearance following a couple of months off at Newcastle in February, beaten a head by Benacre. He met trouble in running lastest when fifth to Pietro and remains capable of better.
Rated higher on turf a couple of seasons ago, he was a winner off 86 at Newmarket, and so he remains fairly treated on his best form off this current 84 rating. He can remain competitive back on polytrack, and while an outside draw isn’t ideal, he should run his race once more.
4:10 Newcastle – ANTRIM
At a big price, it might be worth siding with ANTRIM, who struck over C&D last October on his final run for the Gosdens and the Dubawi gelding quickly doubled up in December, again over C&D.
Karl Burke’s charge has wintered in Dubai since, scoring at Meydan in January and most recently finding a Group Two there too hot. However, he’s back in more suitable company for his return to the UK, and he can remain competitive off this sort of mark.
2-3 here, he does need to find some improvement, but he’s in good hands and may not have stopped progressing yet.
4:42 Newcastle – BERKSHIRE SUNDANCE
BERKSHIRE SUNDANCE quickly atoned for a poor run over C&D in January, where he missed the break to score at Lingfield on his next run, and Andrew Balding’s charge could go in again if he gets away on better terms.
The Decorated Knight gelding won at York last October and added to his tally at Kempton in December before his poor showing here behind Duke Of Oxford. He was forgiven that run; however, when getting the better of Barenboim by a head, latest and a 2lbs rise could prove lenient.
First-time cheekpieces may eke out some further improvement, and there’s no stamina issues, so it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise to see him in the mix, assuming he doesn’t fluff his lines at the start as he did on his last visit here.
