1:50 Newmarket — Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap (Class 2, 4yo+ 0-100) 6f
DOUBLE RUSH (9/4) won twice last term, including one over C&D and the Blue Point colt might be the way to go in the opener.
Also a victor at Wolverhampton, his win here came when seeing off the useful Bob Mali by just over one length, where reopposing Invictus Gold was back in third. He was subsequently thwarted in his hat-trick attempt in a valuable race at York, but he went close in the Scottish Stewards Cup at Hamilton, finding only one too good and his last run at Ascot is forgiven as he missed the break and never got involved from the back of the field.
He’s moved from Charlie Hills to the in-form Andrew Balding and having won fresh first time up twelve months ago as well as racing off the same mark than his Hamilton near-miss last July, he could be capable of posting a big run on his reappearance.
Selection: Double Rush
2:25 Newmarket — Betway Feilden Stakes (Listed Race, 3yo) 1m1f
POSEIDON’S WARRIOR (5/2) built on a highly encouraging debut when runner-up at Haydock to impressively run out a five-length victor at Goodwood on his next start, and the Sea The Stars colt can make a winning return to action for Charlie Appleby.
Beaten less than one length on debut, he stepped up for the experience and extra furlong to readily see off Edwin Hubble, making all the running and pushed clear without ever being asked a really serious question by jockey William Buick.
The pair combine again and while the form of that Goodwood victory may prove nothing special, he could nevertheless have plenty of improvement to come this year. A big run wouldn’t come as a shock, and already proven over both the trip and the underfoot conditions, he can strike here.
Selection: Poseidon’s Warrior
3:00 Newmarket — Betway Earl of Sefton Stakes (Group 3, 4yo+) 1m1f
Cambridgeshire winner BOILING POINT (11/4) makes a return to Group company for this, and the Too Darn Hot entire can go close on the back of a fair return in the Winter Derby in February.
Karl Burke’s charge has a decent record here, having won a Listed race and placed in a Group Three when with Roger Varian and following his move to this yard he largely ran well without winning prior to his Cambridgeshire victory, where he forced the verdict on the nod, having made all.
Making all in such a competitive handicap is no mean feat, and he ran well in defeat back at Lingfield despite probably needing the run when fading into fourth behind Sky Safari in the Winter Derby. That slowly-run race wouldn’t have helped him either, given he was likely ridden to get the extra furlong, but this slightly lesser distance is well within his reach, and the run should have him further on fitness-wise than most.
Back on turf and a return to this venue can show the five-year-old in a better light, and no surprise to see him in the mix at the finish.
Selection: Boiling Point
3:35 Newmarket — Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Group 3, Fillies, 3yo) 7f
A few of these contested the Cheveley Park over this course last September, and that race may hold the key with AMERICA QUEEN EW (6/1) taken to go close.
Richard Hannon’s charge was a debut winner at Haydock last July, and the Havana Grey filly subsequently found only Royal Fixation one length too good in the Lowther Stakes at York on her next start.
She ran to a similar level in the Cheveley Park when fourth to True Love, looking mid-race as if she hit a flat spot, and this extra furlong could well help bring out some improvement. Slightly easier ground could prove another positive, and she can make her presence felt in a race that often throws up bigger priced winners.
Selection: America Queen (Each Way)
