How Many Teams Are in the World Cup 2026?

For the first time in history, 48 teams will compete at the World Cup — an increase of 16 from the 32-team format used since 1998. This expansion means a record 104 matches in total, up from 64 in Qatar 2022.

The New Format Explained

  • 12 groups of four teams — each team plays three group matches
  • Top two from each group qualify automatically for the Round of 32 (24 teams)
  • Best eight third-placed teams also qualify — making 32 total
  • New Round of 32 replaces the old Round of 16 as the first knockout stage
  • Teams must now win five knockout matches (not four) to lift the trophy
  • The tournament lasts 39 days — the longest in World Cup history

The expanded format is significant for betting. With 32 teams advancing from the group stage instead of 16, third-place finishes now carry real value, and the quality gap between the best and worst teams is larger than ever — creating more chances for group stage accumulator tips to land.

World Cup 2026 Winner Odds

Spain head into the 2026 World Cup as the betting favourites, having won Euro 2024 with one of the most impressive performances seen from a national team in years. England are second favourites under Thomas Tuchel, while France, Brazil and defending champions Argentina complete the top five in most markets.

Why Spain Are Favourites

Spain arrive as reigning European champions after dismantling England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final. Under Luis de la Fuente, they have the deepest squad in world football. Lamine Yamal — just 18 — is the biggest star in the sport right now. Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo and Rodri form arguably the best midfield at any World Cup. Their group (H) with Uruguay, Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia looks navigable, and their route to the final through Groups H and J could see them avoid England until the semi-finals.

The one risk: Rodri has been recovering from an ACL injury. If he returns at full fitness, Spain are nigh-on unbeatable. If not, the balance in their midfield is disrupted.

Why England Could Win It

England have the most talented generation since 1966, and for the first time, a genuinely world-class manager in Thomas Tuchel. The squad has Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and a deep supporting cast. They qualified top of their group without dropping a point.

Group L draws them against Croatia (manageable), Ghana (beatable) and Panama — a team they beat 6-1 in 2018 with Kane scoring a hat-trick. Their path to the final appears kinder than Spain’s. The tournament starts 60 years to the day after England won the World Cup in 1966.

England’s Squad — Key Players to Watch

Harry Kane is the most important player in the squad. England’s all-time record scorer with 78+ goals, he won the 2018 Golden Boot with six goals and will be hungry to go one better, having missed a penalty against France in Qatar 2022. He scored eight goals in qualifying and is in outstanding form at Bayern Munich. He is also England’s first-choice penalty taker — vital in knockout football.

Jude Bellingham is the X-factor. His late overhwad kick to rescue England against Slovakia at Euro 2024 showed the kind of moments that win tournaments. At Real Madrid, he has developed into one of the most complete midfielders in the world.

Bukayo Saka has been Arsenal’s most consistent performer for three seasons running. His delivery, pressing and goal threat make him one of the first names on Tuchel’s teamsheet.

Elliot Anderson has emerged as the key holding midfielder under Tuchel. His composure in possession has given England a base they lacked under Southgate.

Tuchel’s preferred system is a 4-2-3-1. Squad announced: 1 June 2026.

Scotland World Cup 2026 Odds & Preview

Scotland are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998 — a 28-year wait ended by a dramatic 4-2 win over Denmark in November 2025 that saw them top their qualifying group. For the Tartan Army, this is enormous. For bettors, there is real interest in how Steve Clarke’s side perform.

Scotland are 250/1 to win the tournament — realistic only for the most optimistic punters — but there is genuine value in their group stage markets.

Scotland’s Group C Fixtures

FixtureDateVenue
Scotland vs Haiti13 June 2026Foxborough, USA
Scotland vs Morocco18 June 2026Foxborough, USA
Scotland vs Brazil23 June 2026Miami, USA

Scotland must beat Haiti — their opening fixture is essentially a must-win if they are serious about progressing. Morocco are formidable (World Cup semi-finalists in 2022) but beatable. Brazil is a mountain to climb, but if Scotland have already qualified with two wins, a creditable performance against the Seleção could still see them through as one of the best third-placed teams.

Scott McTominay is Scotland’s standout player. The Napoli midfielder has been one of Serie A’s best performers since leaving Manchester United and is the heartbeat of Clarke’s side. His goals, leadership and energy will be crucial. Andy Robertson at left-back brings Premier League quality and experience. Che Adams leads the line.

Scotland are priced as long-shots, but value exists in markets like “Scotland to qualify from the group” and individual match betting, particularly the Haiti fixture.

World Cup 2026 Dark Horses

Every World Cup throws up a team that goes further than anyone expected. Qatar 2022 had Morocco reaching the semi-finals at 100/1. Russia 2018 had Croatia — 22/1 shots — reaching the final. Here are the teams we think represent genuine each-way value in 2026.

Norway (Dark Horse Pick)

Norway are at their first World Cup since 1998 and it is almost entirely down to Erling Haaland, who scored 16 goals in eight qualifiers — one of the most extraordinary individual qualifying campaigns in football history. At Manchester City, Haaland has redefined what a modern striker can achieve. The draw placed Norway in Group I with France and Senegal — tough, but the expanded format means third place may be enough to progress.

If Norway get out of the group, Haaland in a knockout game is a frightening proposition for any defence. Odds of [ADD] for Norway to reach the quarter-finals represent value.

Colombia

Colombia have been one of South America’s most consistent teams in the 2026 cycle. Led by Liverpool forward Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez, they bring creativity and attacking quality. Their CONMEBOL qualifying campaign was strong. At odds of [ADD], they represent genuine value against European opposition in the knockout rounds.

Morocco

Morocco reached the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar 2022 — the best performance by an African nation in tournament history. They still have the backbone of that squad, with a world-class defensive structure and real quality in midfield. In Group C with Brazil and Scotland, their route to the knockout stages looks navigable. From there, anything is possible.

Japan

Japan have been quietly building one of the best squads in Asian football. Their organised pressing game caused upsets against Germany and Spain in Qatar 2022. In Group F with the Netherlands, they are already seasoned giant-killers. European-based players from the Bundesliga and Premier League give them technical quality. They are worth a dart at long odds.

Portugal as an Each-Way Play

Portugal are priced as a mid-tier contender at [ADD odds], but this could be their last chance with Cristiano Ronaldo still available for international selection. They have a straightforward group (K) against Uzbekistan, Colombia and an intercontinental playoff winner. Ronaldo’s hunger, combined with a squad featuring Bruno Fernandes and Rúben Dias, makes them credible semi-final contenders at bigger odds than their quality suggests.

World Cup 2026 Each Way Betting Tips

Each-way betting on the World Cup winner market is one of the best ways to get value from outright bets. Most bookmakers will only pay out on the top 2 at a major tournament, at 1/2 the odds.

As we get closer to the tournament we will be publishing daily World Cup tips across all 104 matches.

How Each Way Works at the World Cup

Most bookmakers offer each-way terms of 1/2 odds for the top two in the World Cup winner market. Always check the T&Cs before placing.

Example: A £10 each-way bet (total stake £20) on Norway at 50/1 with 1/2 odds top 2:

  • If Norway win: £510 win bet return + £250 place return = £740 profit
  • If Norway finish runners up: £350 place return = £230 profit
  • If Norway exit before the final: £20 stake lost

Our Each-Way World Cup 2026 Tips

Norway (E/W) — Haaland’s goal threat alone justifies a small each-way stake. If they get out of the group, they could run anyone close. Odds of 28/1.

Colombia (E/W) — Underestimated by the market. Real quality in attack. If the draw opens up, they could go deep. Odds of 50/1.

Portugal (E/W) — The market has arguably priced them too long for what they are capable of. With Ronaldo’s final tournament motivation, they are live semi-final contenders. Odds of 12/1.

Each-way terms vary by bookmaker. Check T&Cs before placing. 18+.

World Cup 2026 Golden Boot — Top Goalscorer Tips

The Golden Boot is awarded to the tournament’s leading scorer. With 104 matches to score in — compared to 64 in Qatar — we expect bigger goal tallies from the leading contenders. The record for goals in a single World Cup by one player is 13 (Just Fontaine, 1958). Mbappe (12) and Messi (13, all tournaments) are within touching distance of that record.

Golden Boot Odds — World Cup 2026 Top Goalscorer

PlayerCountryOddsNotes
Kylian MbappeFrance7/12022 winner. 12 WC goals. Group I is tough.
Harry KaneEngland7/12018 winner. 8 WC goals. Penalty taker.

Erling HaalandNorway14/116 qualifying goals. Tough group. First WC.
Lamine YamalSpain20/118 years old. Spain go deep = Yamal scores.
Cristiano RonaldoPortugal25/1Motivation of a final tournament.
Vinicius JuniorBrazil25/1Best FIFA player 2024. Brazil dark horse.
Ousmane DembeleFrance33/1Reigning World Player of Year. 20/1+ value.

Odds from [BOOKMAKER]. 18+. Odds subject to change.

Golden Boot Betting Tips

Harry Kane is our top pick. He won the Golden Boot in 2018 and has scored eight goals in 11 World Cup appearances. England face Croatia (manageable), Ghana (beatable) and Panama — a team Kane destroyed in 2018. He is England’s first-choice penalty taker. At Bayern Munich this season, he has scored 30+ goals. If England go deep — which the market expects — Kane will be near the top of the scoring charts.

Mbappe is the clear favourite and rightly so. He has 12 World Cup goals from two tournaments and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final. France’s route through Group I with Senegal and Norway is the toughest of the big nations. If they get through, Mbappe in a knockout tournament is something to behold.

Value pick: Ousmane Dembele at 33/1. He is the reigning World Player of the Year and plays opposite Mbappe in France’s attack. France going deep means Dembele gets goals. He is priced well below his true probability.

Each-way tip: Haaland at 14/1. Norway’s group is difficult, but Haaland’s goal rate against any opposition is unmatched. 16 goals in eight qualifying games. If Norway qualify from Group I — not impossible — Haaland will be scoring heavily. The each-way terms give you a return if he finishes in the top four.

World Cup 2026 Bet Builder Tips

Bet builders are perfect for the World Cup. With big matches featuring the world’s best players, there are rich markets across shots, cards, corners, goalscorers and match results to combine into high-value builders. A well-constructed four or five-leg builder on a major World Cup knockout tie can produce 20/1, 30/1 or bigger from a single game.

We will publish a dedicated bet builder article for every match involving England and Scotland, plus the major knockout ties as the tournament progresses. Before the tournament, we are already building our database of player card rates, foul averages, corner statistics and match result trends for all 48 nations.

Our best World Cup bet builder markets to target:

  • Player to be carded — knockout football produces more cards. Right-sided midfielders against tricky wingers are the most bookable positions.
  • Both teams to score — matches between evenly matched nations in the knockouts often see goals at both ends.
  • Over corners — big attacking nations like Spain, France and Brazil produce high corner counts.
  • Anytime goalscorer — target centre-forwards on penalty duty (Kane, Mbappe, Haaland, Messi) in games against weaker opponents.
  • Match result + BTTS — Group stage games between mid-ranked nations often produce attacking play, giving BTTS + result builders solid value.

Dedicated bet builder articles will be posted on the World Cup tips section for every England and Scotland match. See our bet builder tips hub for the latest.

World Cup 2026 BTTS Tips

Both Teams to Score tips for World Cup fixtures will be published on the morning of each match day throughout the tournament. BTTS is one of the most popular markets at a World Cup because the expanded format means more games between evenly matched nations — the type of fixtures that consistently produce goals at both ends.

Pre-Tournament BTTS Analysis:

Group stage games between well-matched nations historically produce BTTS results at a high rate. Games to watch for BTTS value at the 2026 World Cup:

  • France vs Norway (Group I) — two attack-minded nations. Haaland vs Mbappe. BTTS is extremely likely.
  • Brazil vs Morocco (Group C) — Brazil’s firepower vs Morocco’s proven ability to score at major tournaments.
  • Spain vs Uruguay (Group H) — Spain will score. Uruguay, with their South American attacking tradition, are unlikely to be shut out.
  • England vs Croatia (Group L) — historically tight tie. Croatia have never been held scoreless at a major tournament.

How to Bet on the World Cup 2026

New to betting on major tournaments? Here is a quick guide to the main World Cup betting markets and how each one works.

Outright Winner

The most popular World Cup bet. You back one nation to win the tournament outright. Bets are placed before the tournament and settled after the final. The longer you wait to place your bet, the shorter the odds become as the field narrows. Backing early offers bigger prices; waiting until the tournament is underway gives you more information but shorter odds.

Each Way

As explained in our each-way section above, each-way bets pay out on the winner and the second place. Ideal for backing teams like Norway or Colombia at bigger prices where an outright win is unlikely but a deep run is possible.

Group Winner

You back a nation to finish top of their group. These markets offer better odds than the outright winner market while still requiring just three group stage matches. Strong favourites like Spain, France, England and Argentina are short to win their groups but offer more value than the outright winner price.

To Qualify from the Group

A step down in risk from group winner — you just need your chosen team to finish in the top two or be among the best eight third-placed sides. This market is extremely popular for backing mid-tier nations like Norway, Colombia or Scotland, who may not win their group but are capable of qualifying.

Match Betting

Backing the result of individual games — home win, draw or away win. Becomes available closer to the tournament once match fixtures and kick-off times are confirmed. Our World Cup tips page carries previews for every major game.

Both Teams to Score

Both teams must score at least once. No concern with the result. Popular for group stage games between attacking nations. See our World Cup BTTS section above.

Correct Score

Predict the exact final score. High risk, high reward. A 2-1 correct score in a major knockout tie typically pays 7/1 to 10/1. We include World Cup correct score tips in our correct score tips section throughout the tournament.

Bet Builder

Combine multiple selections from the same match — such as a team to win, a player to score, both teams to score and a corner line. See our World Cup bet builder section above.

Golden Boot / Top Goalscorer

Which player will score the most goals in the tournament? Settled on goals, with assists as the first tie-break. See our Golden Boot section above.

Accumulator

Combine multiple match or outright results into one bet. All selections must be correct. Our daily World Cup accumulator tips are in the section above.

Best Bookmakers for World Cup 2026 Betting

Not all bookmakers are equal when it comes to World Cup betting. Here is what we look for and which sites we recommend for the different types of bets.

For outright winner and Golden Boot markets — Betfred and William Hill typically offer the widest range of each-way terms on the World Cup winner market, which makes them our first port of call for backing dark horses.

For match betting and bet builders – Boylesports have consistently been the most competitive bookmaker for bet builder odds on major international football fixtures, frequently topping the price comparison for key markets.

For accumulators — bet365 offers acca bonuses on qualifying accumulator bets, boosting winnings on winning accumulators of four or more selections.

For live/in-play betting — bet365’s live streaming and in-play markets are the most comprehensive available to UK punters for major international tournaments.

Who Has Won the Most World Cups?

Only eight nations have ever won the FIFA World Cup in its 92-year history. The 2026 tournament will be contested by twice as many teams as the first edition in 1930 — but the trophy has never strayed far from the usual suspects.

NationWinsYears
Brazil51958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002
Germany41954, 1974, 1990, 2014
Italy41934, 1938, 1982, 2006
Argentina31978, 1986, 2022
France21998, 2018
Uruguay21930, 1950
England11966
Spain12010

Nine out of the last ten World Cup winners were priced at 7/1 or shorter before the tournament — a key stat when assessing each-way value. Only once in the last 40 years has a nation outside the top six in the pre-tournament betting won the trophy (Greece at Euro 2004 was a European Championship, not the World Cup — the point stands).
