Spurs betting tips

It’s the North London Derby this Sunday as league leaders Arsenal head to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to take on their fiercest rivals Spurs.

Below you will find our Tottenham vs Arsenal betting tips, match predictions and a 33/1 bet builder for one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Premier League season.

Key Stats – Tottenham vs Arsenal

  • Arsenal have lost only one of their last 10 matches in all competitions
  • Both teams have scored in seven of the last 10 North London Derby meetings
  • Jurrien Timber has been carded five times this season and averages well above one foul per game in the league
  • Joao Palhinha has been booked 10 times in all competitions for Spurs this season
  • Spurs have won only one of their last 10 Premier League matches
  • Both teams to score has landed in six of Arsenal’s last 10 league games and seven of Spurs’ last 10

Arsenal Form and Match Preview

Arsenal are five points clear at the top of the league, albeit second-placed City have a game in hand over the Gunners. Arteta’s side have won 17 of their 27 league matches this season.

The Gunners head into Sunday’s derby in a strong overall position, but with a point to prove after back-to-back league draws against Brentford and Wolves. Those dropped points have allowed City to keep the pressure on, and Arteta will know that a win at Spurs would be a huge statement in the title race — extending the lead back to eight points with City’s game in hand still to come. Away from those two draws, Arsenal have been in excellent form, and with the squad largely fit and firing, there is no reason to think they can’t get the job done at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Form and Match Preview

Spurs have had a very poor season, and could even end up in a relegation battle as we come towards the business end of the season. They’re only four points outside the relegation zone, in 16th place, after West Ham’s point against Bournemouth.

It is a remarkable state of affairs for a club of Tottenham’s size. They have won only one of their last 10 Premier League matches, and the pressure will be on new manager Igor Tudor from the off. The home crowd will be roaring them on in the derby, and derbies have a habit of throwing up surprises, but the overall quality gap between these two sides right now is significant. Without a reliable source of goals and with defensive frailties that have haunted them all season, Spurs face an enormous task keeping Arsenal at bay on Sunday.

Best Bet Builder Tip – Arsenal to Win

Despite being away from home, I’m backing title-chasing Arsenal to overcome their neighbours in the North London Derby on Sunday. The Gunners have lost only one of their last 10 in all competitions. However, they have drawn their last two league matches, against Brentford and Wolves, and will be looking to get back to winning ways and extend their lead at the top this weekend. Spurs have had a very poor season in the league, and have won only one of their last 10 Premier League outings, with only seven victories all season. I think Arsenal will come out on top here.

The recent head-to-head record also points Arsenal’s way. They have won five of the last eight North London Derby meetings in all competitions, and with the form disparity as stark as it currently is, 3/5 looks a fair reflection of the likely outcome. Arsenal know that three points here, with City still having that game in hand, could be the moment the title race truly tips in their favour.

Both Teams to Score

With it being a derby, I do think both teams will score. Being at home, I expect Spurs to come quickly out of the blocks, and Arsenal will do the same. Both sides will be all guns blazing, and may leave themselves exposed defensively. Both teams have scored in six of Arsenal’s last 10 league matches, while both teams have scored in seven of the last 10 in the league for Spurs. In the last 10 meetings between these two, both teams have scored on seven occasions. I expect there to be goals here.

The derby context matters enormously with this selection. Even in Spurs’ most difficult seasons, they have to raise their game against Arsenal, and their attackers will be desperate to make a mark in front of their own fans. At 17/20, both teams to score is almost even money, which feels like decent value given the historical data and the wide-open nature a derby of this magnitude tends to produce.

Jurrien Timber to Be Booked (15/4)

Arsenal’s defender Jurrien Timber is the first of two players I think are good odds to be carded this weekend. The 24-year-old Dutchman has been carded five times this season, with four yellow cards in the league and one in the Carabao Cup. He has made 34 fouls in his 26 league appearances, giving him an average of well above one foul per game. I expect he will make a foul or two here in a fiery derby encounter, and he’s good odds for a card at 15/4.

The derby setting only amplifies this. Referees tend to be trigger-happy in North London clashes, where the intensity and needle between the sides regularly results in cautions in the first half. Timber is exactly the type of aggressive, high-pressing defender who is liable to pick up a card when the tackles are flying in — and with Spurs pushing forward looking for a goal, he will be in the thick of it defensively from the off.

Alternative Bet – Jurrien Timber Over 1.5 Fouls (6/5)

With an average not far shy of 1.5 fouls per game, taking Timber to make over 1.5 fouls here has a real chance. However, at odds of 6/5, it decreases the odds of the bet to 16/1.

Joao Palhinha to Be Booked (17/10)

17/10 is fantastic odds for Palhinha to be booked, considering he has been carded 10 times in all competitions for Spurs this season. Six of those cards have come in his 23 league appearances, while he has been booked twice in the Champions League and once in each of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. In the league, he’s made 17 fouls, an average of over 0.5 per game. I can’t ignore the odds of 17/10 for Palhinha to be booked again this weekend.

In a match where Spurs will likely spend large spells chasing the game, Palhinha’s role will be to disrupt Arsenal’s build-up play in the middle of the park – and that means putting himself about, winning the ball aggressively, and inevitably giving away fouls. He is exactly the kind of combative midfielder referees keep a close eye on, and with a booking rate of nearly one every two league appearances, 17/10 is a price that deserves to be on the teamsheet for this bet builder.

Tottenham v Arsenal Predictions Summary

To summarise our Tottenham vs Arsenal betting tips and predictions for Sunday’s North London Derby:

Our best bet is Arsenal to win, backed by their superior form, a poor Spurs run of just one win in 10 Premier League games, and the motivation of a title race that demands three points. Our 33/1 bet builder combines an Arsenal win, both teams to score, Jurrien Timber to be booked, and Joao Palhinha to be booked.

If you’d prefer to take a touch of risk off the card selections, swapping Timber to be booked for Timber over 1.5 fouls at 6/5 still returns 16/1, giving you an alternative route to a big payout from this fixture.
