How Does William Hill Money Back if 2nd Work?
The offer is straightforward. Back a horse to win in a selected qualifying race, and if your selection finishes second, William Hill refund your stake in cash.

The refund amount is calculated as your total stake minus any returns, up to £10. In most cases on a straight win single that loses, you simply receive your stake back up to £10.
Money Back if 2nd – Worked Examples
Example 1 – Win single, horse finishes 2nd:
You place a £10 win bet on a horse at 6/1. It finishes second. William Hill refund your full £10 stake as cash.
Example 2 – Each-way single, horse finishes 2nd:
You place a £5 each-way bet (£10 total stake) on a horse at 3/1 with 1/4 place odds. Your horse finishes second. The place part of your each-way bet pays out (£5 at 3/4 = £3.75 return + £5 stake = £8.75). Money Back if 2nd applies to the win part only – the refund is calculated as stake minus returns: £10 – £8.75 = £1.25 cash refund.
The offer is most valuable on a straight win single – back a horse at 3/1 or bigger, it runs second, you get your stake back up to £10 in cash.
When Does the Offer Run?
William Hill run the Money Back if 2nd promotion on selected flat racing meetings throughout the Flat season, typically on two meetings per day on qualifying days. During the major festivals – Cheltenham, Aintree, Royal Ascot and the Grand National – the offer is frequently extended to cover more races.
