Each day, William Hill offer extra places on selected each-way horse racing bets. Extra place races are one of the most valuable ongoing promotions for horse racing punters – they give you additional chances to collect on each-way bets without paying any more for them.
This offer runs daily and is available at the biggest meetings of the year, including the Cheltenham Festival, Royal Ascot and the Grand National at Aintree.
William Hill Extra Places Today
To find today’s extra place races at William Hill, go straight to the William Hill homepage or app. The current extra place races are displayed on the carousel at the top of the page alongside today’s other promotions.
The number of extra places varies by race. William Hill will typically show you the specific races, the number of places being paid and the minimum runner requirement for each. Always check before placing your each-way bet as the races change daily.

How William Hill Extra Places Work
Extra places increase the number of positions paid out on each-way bets beyond the standard place terms for that race. This is most valuable on competitive handicaps and big-field races where the standard each-way terms might only cover three or four places.
A practical example:
A race with 12 runners normally pays three places each-way at 1/4 odds. William Hill’s extra place promotion extends this to four places at 1/5 odds. If your selection finishes fourth, you collect on the place part of your each-way bet. Without the extra place, you would receive nothing.
The more runners in the race and the bigger the field, the more valuable extra places become. In races with 20+ runners – such as the Grand National or a big Cheltenham handicap – extra places paying six, seven or even eight positions make a significant difference to your chances of a return.
Extra Places at the Major Festivals
William Hill consistently run enhanced extra place offers at the biggest racing meetings of the year. At the Cheltenham Festival, Royal Ascot and the Grand National, you can expect the number of extra places on offer to increase significantly compared to a standard Saturday card.
At recent Cheltenham Festivals, William Hill have offered up to eight places each-way on races like the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle – far beyond the standard five places most bookmakers offer on competitive graded races.
For the Grand National specifically, most bookmakers pay five places each-way as standard. An extra place promotion pushing this to six or seven places on a 40-runner field is genuinely valuable – a horse that finishes sixth at 20/1 still returns a profit on the place part of the each-way bet.

William Hill Extra Places in Shops
There are over 1,400 William Hill betting shops in the UK. The in-shop extra place offers often mirror the online offers but it is always worth checking, as there may be additional races in shops or some online races that do not apply in-store.
When you place your bet in a William Hill shop, the extra place sign is displayed on the screens next to qualifying races. The number of places and the terms are shown alongside each race – always check the specific terms before placing rather than assuming the standard offer applies.
Why Extra Places Matter for Each-Way Betting
Each-way betting is the foundation of horse racing betting for most punters. Understanding how extra places improve your chances is essential to getting value from the markets.
Standard each-way terms for most races pay three places at 1/4 odds for fields of 8-11 runners, and four places at 1/4 odds for fields of 12-15 runners. The bigger the field, the more places are paid.
Extra places extend this further. An extra place race paying five instead of four places at 1/5 odds on a 12-runner handicap gives you one additional position where your place bet collects. On a 16/1 shot finishing fifth, the difference between a standard each-way return and an extra-place return at 1/5 is substantial.
The key is always to check the place fraction as well as the number of places. Some extra place promotions pay additional places at 1/5 rather than 1/4 – this is still excellent value, but the maths are slightly different. Our understanding probability guide covers how to calculate expected value on each-way bets.
