The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the feature race of the National Hunt calendar, and horse racing pundit and expert tipster Tom Segal has picked his ante-post bet for the big race on Friday 13th March.
The Gold Cup looks wide open this year, and with Fact to File the current 4/1 favourite without even being entered, it is a competitive betting market with a few unknowns. Of course, Fact to File could (and probably will) be supplemented for the race, but the British have a strong hand, with three of the top 6 in the Gold Cup betting odds coming from home soil.
Our own tipsters have already started putting together their Cheltenham 2026 tips from some of the Championship races, including the Gold Cup on Friday.
The last British horse to win the Gold Cup was Native River back in 2018, but with Jango Baie, The Jukebox Man and Haiti Couleurs towards the top of the betting, there is hope the Cup can stay on British shores. Two-time winner Galopin Des Champs and stablemate Gaelic Warrior might have something to say about that, as will Fact to File if he is supplemented. Last year’s winner, Inothewayurthinkin, hasn’t gone a yard in any of his races since winning 12 months ago, but he cannot be ruled out.
Tom Segal’s Cheltenham Gold Cup Tip
Tom Segal has been speaking on the Racing Post In The Know YouTube show and he said:
“I think the British might win this. Haiti Couleurs gets a lot of bad press, but all he does is win races, whatever it is, and he wins easily. No one knows where his ceiling is.
“He’s a lot better than Inothewayurthinkin was before winning this last year. He’s done a lot in a short space of time and he has won at Cheltenham. He could easily win it. He’s a seriously top-class horse. I think he’ll be a lot bigger price on the day too.”
When Galopin Des Champs was spoken about, Segal was quick to dismiss the National Hunt legend and two-time Gold Cup winner, saying:
“I don’t fancy him at all. Last year’s race was a complete shambles and completely fell apart, but this time you’ve got four or five serious contenders in there. He’ll have to be as good as when he won it the first time to win again.”
