Chelsea vs Port Vale – FA Cup Quarter Final
It’s David versus Goliath this weekend as League One’s bottom side, Port Vale, travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea, who are sixth in the Premier League and have won the FA Cup on eight occasions.
The Blues have lost their last four matches in all competitions, with two Champions League defeats against PSG – an 8-2 hammering over two legs – and defeats to Newcastle and Everton in the Premier League. Their last win was against Wrexham in the last round of this competition back at the beginning of March.
Port Vale are having a dreadful season and are rooted to the bottom of League One, four points behind Northampton Town above them. The FA Cup is a welcome distraction for them, and they’ve done well to get to this stage of the competition, and are the lowest-ranked team left at this stage.
Key Stats — Chelsea vs Port Vale
- Chelsea scored four goals in each of their last two FA Cup matches — against Wrexham and Hull City
- Port Vale have conceded 55 goals in 38 League One matches this season
- Cole Palmer has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season and is Chelsea’s designated penalty taker
- Funso Ojo has been carded eight times in 27 League One appearances this season, averaging just under one foul per game
- Liam Gordon has been carded five times in all competitions this season — four in League One and once in the EFL Trophy
- Chelsea have won the FA Cup on eight occasions and are heavy favourites to progress to the semi-finals
Chelsea Form and Match Preview
The Blues have lost their last four matches in all competitions, with two Champions League defeats against PSG – an 8-2 hammering over two legs – and defeats to Newcastle and Everton in the Premier League. Their last win was against Wrexham in the last round of this competition back at the beginning of March.
Despite that run of defeats, the FA Cup offers Chelsea an immediate opportunity to reset and build momentum ahead of a crucial end to the season. This is the kind of fixture — a League One opponent at Stamford Bridge — that is tailor-made for a big performance from Enzo Maresca’s side, and the desire to reach the semi-finals should sharpen minds considerably. Their scoring record in this competition is encouraging, with four goals in each of their last two FA Cup ties.
Port Vale Form and Match Preview
Port Vale are having a dreadful season and are rooted to the bottom of League One, four points behind Northampton Town above them. The FA Cup is a welcome distraction for them, and they’ve done well to get to this stage of the competition, and are the lowest-ranked team left at this stage.
Darren Moore’s side deserves enormous credit for reaching the quarter finals, but the gulf in class against a Premier League Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge is stark. Conceding 55 goals in 38 league games tells its own story about their defensive frailties, and against an attack that scored four in each of their last two FA Cup ties, it is difficult to see anything other than a heavy defeat on Saturday.
Chelsea vs Port Vale Betting Tips
Best Bet Builder Tip — Chelsea to Score Over 3.5 Goals — 10/11
I think this one could be a hammering at Stamford Bridge, and the best value I can find is Chelsea to score more than 3.5 goals at 10/11. With the gap in quality between both sides, Chelsea should win this one very comfortably, and over 3.5 goals is certainly not out of the question. In the last round, against Championship Wrexham, Chelsea scored four. They also scored four in the round previous to that against Hull, so they’ve got their shooting boots on in this competition. Port Vale have conceded 55 in 38 in the league this season, and I think they’ll concede a good few against Chelsea this weekend.
Cole Palmer to Score — 10/11
If Chelsea are to score a hatful, you can bet Cole Palmer will be in on the action. The Chelsea forward has bagged 10 goals in all competitions this season, with nine in the league and one in the Champions League. He is the clubs second top scorer behind Joao Pedro who has scored 14 in all competitions. His last goal came in Chelsea’s last league victory, a 1-4 win over Aston Villa at the beginning of March. He’s Chelsea’s penalty taker, and with the Blues expected to spend most of this match on the attack, I wouldn’t bet against them getting a penalty, and I think Palmer is good odds for a goal.
Alternative Bet — Cole Palmer Over 1.5 Shots on Target (9/10)
9/10 is good odds for Palmer to have more than 1.5 shots on target, and would reduce the odds of this bet builder to 20/1, which is still decent. He averages just under one shot on target in the league, but Chelsea should create a lot of chances here, and I think he could have a couple of shots on target.
Funso Ojo to Be Booked — 5/2
Port Vale’s Belgian midfielder Funso Ojo is the first of two players from the Valiants I think could be booked. In League One this season, the 34-year-old has been carded eight times in 27 appearances, making a total of 25 fouls, an average of just under one foul per game. The former Wigan and Aberdeen midfielder will have his work cut out here against a very strong Chelsea side, and I think he will make a couple of fouls. 5/2 is good odds for him to pick up his ninth card of the season.
Liam Gordon to Be Booked — 16/5
The second Port Vale player I think could be carded is left-back Liam Gordon. The Guyana international has been carded five times in all competitions this season, four times in League One and once in the EFL Trophy. The 26-year-old will come up against the likes of Cole Palmer and Alejandro Garnacho here, which will be very difficult customers for him. I expect him to be given a bit of a run around here by the Chelsea attack, and I expect he’ll make a couple of fouls and is good odds to be booked at 16/5.
