Southampton vs Arsenal – FA Cup Quarter Final

Championship Southampton hosts Premier League leaders Arsenal in the quarter-final of the FA Cup this Saturday. Southampton are sixth in the Championship, six points outside of the top four after 39 matches played.

The Saints are amidst a very strong run of form, unbeaten in their last 14 matches in all competitions, with their last defeat coming against Hull in mid January. In that time, they’ve won 11 and drawn three.

Arsenal are league leaders for a reason, and are having a marvellous season at the top of the Premier League. The Gunners have won seven of their last 10 in all competitions and are nine points clear of Manchester City at the top of the pile.

Key Stats — Southampton vs Arsenal

  • Southampton are unbeaten in their last 14 matches in all competitions, winning 11 and drawing three since mid January
  • Arsenal have scored 20 goals in their last 10 matches — an average of two per game — and conceded eight in that time
  • Southampton have scored 22 goals in their last 10 matches, also conceding eight
  • Over 3.5 goals has landed in three of the last 10 meetings between these two sides, with three or more goals in each of the last three matches between them
  • Flynn Downes has been booked 13 times in all competitions this season, making 58 fouls in 36 appearances — an average of more than 1.5 per game
  • Bukayo Saka has averaged just under one shot on target per Premier League game this season, with 26 in 27 appearances

Southampton Form and Match Preview

The Saints are amidst a very strong run of form, unbeaten in their last 14 matches in all competitions, with their last defeat coming against Hull in mid January. In that time, they’ve won 11 and drawn three.

Russell Martin’s side are the form team in the Championship right now, and that 14-match unbeaten run is a genuine threat to Arsenal’s FA Cup ambitions. Six points outside the top four in the Championship, they have used the cup as a platform to showcase their quality, and their attacking output — 22 goals in their last 10 — demonstrates they are no side to be taken lightly, regardless of the opposition.

Arsenal Form and Match Preview

Arsenal are league leaders for a reason, and are having a marvellous season at the top of the Premier League. The Gunners have won seven of their last 10 in all competitions and are nine points clear of Manchester City at the top of the pile.

Mikel Arteta’s side come into this one following a defeat in the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City, but the international break will have given the squad time to reset and refocus. Arsenal’s quality across every department is significantly superior to Championship opposition, and with a World Cup just weeks away and an FA Cup semi-final place on the line, every player in the squad will be fully motivated. Their scoring record — 20 goals in 10 matches — suggests Southampton’s defence faces a very difficult 90 minutes.

Southampton vs Arsenal Betting Tips

Arsenal to Win — 3/10

Despite Southampton’s outstanding form of late, I expect Arsenal to win this quarter-final match-up away from home. The Gunners have far superior quality in their squad, as you would expect between two teams who are a league apart in the pyramid system. Arsenal have won seven in 10, which is decent form, although they come into this one following a defeat in the Carabao Cup final to Man City. Having had the international break to reset, I think the Gunners will come into this one firing on all cylinders, and I think they’ll progress to the next round of the cup.

Best Bet Builder Tip — Over 3.5 Goals — 5/4

There’s not a huge amount of value in this game, but I think expect there to be goals, so over 3.5 goals in the match at 5/4 is about the best you’ll find. I don’t expect it to be easy for Arsenal, given Southampton are bang in form, but I do think they’ll score a couple, and Southampton might well hit back at them. In Arsenal’s last 10, they’ve scored 20 goals, an average of two per game. They’ve also conceded eight in that time. For Southampton, they’ve scored 22 in their last 10, also conceding eight. There’s typically goals between these two, and this selection has landed in three of the last 10 meetings. There has also been three or more goals in each of their last three matches against each other. If Arsenal are on song, they could come out and hammer Southampton, but the Saints should be up for this, and I can see goals for both teams.

Bukayo Saka Over 0.5 Shots on Target — 4/9

Bukayo Saka has scored nine goals in all competitions for Arsenal this season. The winger has bagged six in the Premier League, two in the Champions League, and one in the Carabao Cup. He’s yet to score in the FA Cup this season, with one shot on target in his two appearances so far. In the league, he has had 26 shots on target in 27 appearances, an average of just under one shot on target per game. Arsenal will create chances here, and I think Saka will have at least one shot on target.

Alternative Bet — Bukayo Saka to Score (13/8)

Taking Saka to score instead of having a shot on target at odds of 13/8 boosts the odds of this bet builder to 35/4, with the best price including this selection with Ladbrokes. As I said, Arsenal will create chances, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the scoresheet.

Flynn Downes to Be Booked — 13/8

Southampton’s Flynn Downes is the favourite to be carded in this tie, and for good reason. The midfielder has picked up 13 bookings in all competitions with 10 in the Championship, one in the Carabao Cup, and two in his two FA Cup appearances so far. The 27-year-old has made a massive 58 fouls in 36 appearances for the Saints this season, and has made six in the FA Cup, an average of more than two per game. Against a strong Arsenal midfield, there’s a high chance he will be carded for a 14th time this season on Saturday.
