Gareth Southgate issues a stern warning to Reece James

Reece James Chelsea

Once again missing out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this month’s international break, Reece James has been hit with a stern warning from the Three Lions manager.

“He’s only got one more squad”

While Chelsea teammate Raheem Sterling might have also been omitted from Southgate’s England squad on Thursday afternoon, it was the Blues’ skipper who stole most of the headlines.

Although many might still feel that James is England’s standout option at right-back, the 23-year-old currently finds himself on the outside looking in.

Still struggling with a string of injury issues this season and failing to find any kind of fluidity, James has made just a single Premier League start since a 2-2 draw against Liverpool on the opening weekend.

While the Three Lions might have cruised their way to next year’s European Championships, it appears that Chelsea’s homegrown superstar is now facing a real battle to be part of Southgate’s squad out in Germany.

Speaking after Thursday’s squad announcement, Southgate has issued a stark warning to the 26-cap international.

“He’s only got one more squad before the Euros.”

Maddison withdraws from Southgate’s November squad

Already without the likes of James and fellow Chelsea teammate Ben Chilwell this month, Southgate’s squad have also been hit with a major blow as it was announced that Tottenham talisman James Maddison faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

Picking up an ankle injury during Monday’s 4-1 loss at home against Chelsea, the ex-Leicester star has been forced to withdraw from Southgate’s November squad.

While Spurs might have initially hoped that Maddison’s ankle blow was nothing too serious, it has been suggested that the 26-year-old will not feature again until the New Year.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Wolves on Saturday afternoon, Ange Postecoglu cut a grim verdict on Maddison’s ankle injury.

“Madders, a lot worse than we thought.”

Although England might be without a number of Premier League stars when they welcome Malta to Wembley next week, Southgate’s side do find themselves tipped as a standout contender at EURO 24.
