1:32 Sandown — Mohaaraj
Six runners are set to go to post for the opening handicap at Sandown over 1m1f.
A tricky race to start, I was impressed with the Richard Hughes-trained MOHAARAJ (9/4) last time out at Haydock on his handicap debut. That is currently the best form on offer, albeit all the runners are still open to significant improvement. However, so is Mohaaraj and he sets a decent standard. He’s proven in handicaps and won’t mind how the race is run.
Selection: Mohaaraj to win
1:50 York — Chillingham (Queen Mothers Cup)
The first race live from York is the Queen Mothers Cup, a handicap over 1m4f for the amateur female riders.
You’d like to think this has been the target for CHILLINGHAM (4/1) after winning this contest in the stewards’ room last season. His form since hasn’t been great, but he’s blown the cobwebs away with a reappearance effort this season just as he did last year. The dip in form sees him return this time round off a 6lb lower mark. Becky Smith is one of the better amateur riders so that’s a positive, and if he’s anywhere near his best, he’s the one to beat.
Selection: Chillingham to win
2:25 York — Extremely Zain (NB)
Next up at York is a competitive 7f handicap.
I think EXTREMELY ZAIN (2/1) NB can defy the inexperience and win this to remain unbeaten. Two runs and two victories for the 3-year-old; he is completely unexposed. I have no doubt he’ll be better than this opening handicap mark and the fact he’s got a Group 1 entry for later in the season suggests connections agree. Haggas isn’t one to aim high so early so I’m confident Extremely Zain can land this handicap before bigger targets await.
Selection: Extremely Zain — Next Best
2:42 Sandown — Military Code (Scurry Stakes)
The 2:42 from Sandown is the Scurry Stakes, a listed contest over 5f for the 3-year-olds.
It’s MILITARY CODE (5/2) for me here. There isn’t much between the Godolphin pair Military Code and Words Of Truth but the latter has a 5lb penalty to shoulder. Military Code had a good season last year, winning twice and going close in two listed events. He ran well over this course and distance in August, and if he’s ready to go on seasonal reappearance, I think he can land this contest.
Selection: Military Code to win
3:00 York — Al Qareem (NAP — Race to the Ebor Grand Cup)
The 3:00 from York is the Race To The Ebor Grand Cup over the Ebor course and distance of 1m6f.
I think AL QAREEM (9/4) NAP can bounce back here after a disappointing run at Chester last time out. Before that, he was a tough, hardy, consistent sort who always ran his race. I think the fast surface was against him there, and returning to a course and distance he’s won over with some dig in the ground can see him back to that. He won this race last year, and the 2026 renewal doesn’t look any stronger. He’s the best horse in the race if they all run to their best.
Selection: Al Qareem — NAP
3:17 Sandown — Raammee
Our final race from Sandown is a trappy mile handicap.
I’d be happy to give RAAMMEE (7/2) another chance after a slightly disappointing 4th-placed effort last time out here at Sandown. He came into that race well fancied after two impressive AW wins last season at 2. He refused to settle last time out, and I’m hoping that has just taken the buzz out of him. If he settles better with the hood now applied, I think he can bounce back.
Selection: Raammee to win
3:32 York — Red Spells Danger (EW)
We end proceedings with another competitive York handicap, this time over 6 furlongs.
The one for me is RED SPELLS DANGER (6/1) EW, who’s on a serious upward curve of late. He’s come along steadily and really clicked into gear on his last two starts. The first was in a nothing race at Ripon but then last time out at Hamilton he duly bolted up like a well-handicapped horse going the right way. He’s up 10lb but deserving so. This 3 year-old will be well suited by this 6f trip and a decent gallop. Stall 9 is a good spot on this track too.
Selection: Red Spells Danger — Each-Way
