A Short History of Glorious Goodwood

Racing began on the South Downs at Goodwood in 1802, when Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke of Richmond, laid out a course on his estate. The meeting established itself quickly as a highlight of the Flat season, drawing leading owners and the best horses in training.

By the mid-19th century it had built a reputation for combining top-class racing with a distinctive social occasion — a tradition that survives today. Originally the Goodwood Race Meeting, it became known as “Glorious Goodwood” for its setting and the quality of its racing. Lester Piggott, Sir Gordon Richards, Frankie Dettori and Sir Michael Stoute have all enjoyed notable success there across more than two centuries of racing.
