ITV Racing shows seven races live from 13:15 to 16:30 on Saturday, closing Glorious Goodwood with support from the Listed Chalice Stakes at Newmarket and the Summer Cup at Thirsk. Ed Chamberlin and Francesca Cumani front the coverage.
13:33 Newmarket — Chalice Stakes (Listed)
The opener on ITV comes from Newmarket. It is the listed Chalice Stakes over 1m4f.
I like the three-year-old ROMANTIC SYMPHONY in here as she takes on her elders, getting plenty of weight. An impressive winner on her first two starts, she went to Lingfield a live Oaks contender before that disappointing 4th-placed effort in the trial. The yard was under a cloud at the time, and she ended up skipping the Oaks. She went to France in her next start and ran a fine second at this level. That was a step back in the right direction, and she now returns to Newmarket where the yard has always excelled. The elders aren’t world beaters by any stretch of the imagination, and I think she’s the one to beat with the weight allowance.
13:50 Goodwood — Coral Summer Handicap
First up on the final day of Glorious Goodwood is the Summer Handicap over 1m6f.
The one for me is SING US A SONG, who is better than a mark of 97 and hopefully today, this previous Goodwood winner can show us why. He’s still lightly raced, and he ran very well last time out when finishing 5th in the trappy Copper Horse Handicap at the Royal meeting. He was third best on the day, but late interference had him drop two places close to home. He can continue on an upward trajectory and looks sure to go close for connections who’ve done well this week in Wathnan Racing.
14:08 Thirsk — Summer Cup Handicap
We have one race live from Thirsk, and it is the competitive Summer Cup Handicap over the mile trip.
I think NORTHERN EXPRESS looks solid in here. A really good winner at York last time out in a competitive affair, he comes into this in decent nick. He’s a previous winner at Thirsk over this trip too, and from stall 4, he can get a nice handy position and run a big race.
14:25 Goodwood — Highclere Glorious Stakes (Group 3) — NB
The 2:25 from Goodwood is the Glorious Stakes, a Group 3 for the elders over 1m4f.
I like OPPORTUNITY NB, who was an impressive winner of the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot when we last saw him. That was impressive as stall 1 made life difficult and he still won pretty easily in what was a competitive handicap on paper. He’s bred to be good, and this son of Frankel looks ready to tackle Group company. He is still lightly raced, and this 4-year-old is on the up whilst main rival Al Aasy is now 9 and can’t be improving.
15:00 Goodwood — Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) — NAP
Next up we have the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes ran over 1m6f.
It is WAARDAH NAP for me in this. Her effort here at Goodwood last season is firmly in the memory bank, and she looks to have been aimed at this meeting again. She was a well-backed winner at listed level here last season when duly bolting up. She didn’t perform at Ascot on her final start of the season but looked ready for a break. She’s returned this season at Group 3 level in Carlisle where she was an eye-catching third. That’ll have him ready for this and she’s the one to beat for me.
15:35 Goodwood — Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) — each-way
The big handicap of the week at Goodwood is the Stewards Cup, a heritage handicap over 6f, and it’s as trappy as ever.
It is TWO TRIBES EW for me who looks sure to go well in a repeat bid to land this contest. An impressive winner of this race last season, he’s proven over this course and distance, which is a really good place to start. He comes into this following a similar path, having run a belter to finish second at Ascot last week. That was a fine effort, and it’s hard not to see him hitting the frame again this week.
16:10 Goodwood — Phase Eight Handicap
We round off with the 4:10, a 7f handicap for the 3-year-olds.
It’s WE’RE GOOSERS for me. The money that came for him at Royal Ascot was highly telling, suggesting connections think he’s a talented horse who’s well ahead of his mark. Prior to Ascot, there was plenty of promise to suggest that. You have to forgive that Ascot run, but it was too bad to be true, and he wasn’t given a hard time from the wrong side of the draw when his chance had gone. He’s now been gelded and compensation may await in this weaker contest.
What is the Stewards’ Cup?
The Stewards’ Cup is the feature of Saturday’s card and the big betting heat of the whole Glorious Goodwood week — a six-furlong heritage handicap run down Goodwood’s straight, with a maximum field of 28 and worth around £250,000. It is off at 15:35 and is one of the most competitive, and trappiest, sprint handicaps of the British season.
