Lucky 15 Bet Explained – What It Is and How It Works

Last Updated on 02/04/2026 by Andy Clark

A Lucky 15 is a multiple bet covering 4 selections across 15 separate bets. It is one of the most popular betting formats in UK horse racing and is offered by every major bookmaker.

The key advantage over a standard accumulator is that you only need one winner to get a return – the 15 bets include 4 singles, so even a single winning selection generates something back.

What Is a Lucky 15 Bet?

A Lucky 15 covers every possible combination of bets across your 4 selections:

  • 4 singles – one bet on each individual selection
  • 6 doubles – every possible 2-selection combination from 4
  • 4 trebles – every possible 3-selection combination from 4
  • 1 fourfold accumulator – all 4 selections combined

That is 4 + 6 + 4 + 1 = 15 bets in total. Hence the name.

Because singles are included, you get a return from just one winner. With a standard 4-fold accumulator, all four selections must win – one loser and the entire stake is lost.

How Much Does a Lucky 15 Cost?

Your stake is multiplied by 15 because there are 15 individual bets.

Stake per betTotal Lucky 15 cost
50p£7.50
£1£15.00
£2£30.00
£5£75.00

An each-way Lucky 15 doubles both the number of bets (to 30) and the total cost, because each of the 15 bets is placed as both a win and a place bet.

Lucky 15 Worked Example

Say you place a £1 Lucky 15 (total stake £15) on four horse racing selections:

HorseOddsResult
Horse 14/1Won
Horse 26/1Won
Horse 33/1Lost
Horse 45/1Lost

With two winners, the calculator works through every combination:

Singles: Horse 1 returns £5 (£4 profit + £1 stake). Horse 2 returns £7 (£6 profit + £1 stake). Total from singles: £12

Doubles: Only one winning double exists – Horse 1 and Horse 2 combined. (4/1 + 1) × (6/1 + 1) × £1 = 5 × 7 = £35

Trebles: No winning treble – would need 3 winners

Fourfold: No winning fourfold – would need all 4 winners

Total return: £47. Total stake: £15. Profit: £32.

With a standard 4-fold accumulator on the same four horses, two losers would mean a total loss of your stake. The Lucky 15 structure means you still profit significantly from two winners.

Lucky 15 Returns by Number of Winners

To illustrate how returns scale with winners, here is an example at typical odds of evens (1/1) per selection on a £1 Lucky 15:

WinnersBets wonApproximate return
00£0
11 single£2
22 singles + 1 double~£8
33 singles + 3 doubles + 1 treble~£26
4All 15 bets~£80

Odds significantly above evens push these returns much higher. At 4/1 per selection, four winners on a £1 Lucky 15 would return approximately £780.

Lucky 15 Bonuses – One Winner Bonuses

Several bookmakers offer a bonus if only one of your four Lucky 15 selections wins. This is one of the most valuable existing customer promotions in racing betting.

Betfred offers the best one-winner bonus on the market. If only one of your four selections wins, Betfred pay triple the odds on that winning selection rather than the standard odds. For example, a 4/1 winner becomes 12/1 for your single bet return.

The same principle applies to Betfred’s other Lucky bets – double odds on a Lucky 31 with one winner, and quadruple odds on a Lucky 63. See our Betfred Lucky 15 bonus guide for full details.

William Hill and Boylesports also offer one-winner bonuses on Lucky 15 bets – check their promotions pages for current terms.

Lucky 15 Each Way

An each-way Lucky 15 doubles your bets to 30 – 15 bets on your selections to win and 15 bets on your selections to place.

The total cost doubles, too. A £1 each-way Lucky 15 costs £30 (30 bets × £1).

The advantage is that a horse which places but does not win still contributes a return across all the place combinations – singles, doubles, trebles and the fourfold place leg. In big-field handicap races where your selections might finish second or third at decent prices, each-way Lucky 15 bets can return very well even without a winner.

Place terms are set by the bookmaker – typically 1/4 the win odds for each place, with the number of places paid depending on the field size. See our each-way betting guide for full details.

Lucky 15 Non-Runners

If one of your Lucky 15 selections is a non-runner, all bets involving that selection are void. The remaining three selections continue as a reduced combination:

  • 3 active selections = 7 bets (3 singles, 3 doubles, 1 treble)
  • 2 active selections = 3 bets (2 singles, 1 double)
  • 1 active selection = 1 bet (1 single)

Your total stake is adjusted accordingly – the cost of voided bets is returned to your account.

If you are placing ante-post Lucky 15 bets, always use a bookmaker offering Non-Runner No Bet terms to protect your stake if a selection is withdrawn before the race. See our NRNB guide for full details.

Lucky 15 vs Accumulator – Which Is Better?

The honest answer is that they serve different purposes and neither is universally better.

4-fold accumulator:

  • Costs 1 unit stake
  • Needs all 4 selections to win
  • Very high reward if it lands
  • Total loss if any selection loses

Lucky 15:

  • Costs 15 unit stakes
  • Returns something from 1 winner upwards
  • Lower maximum return than a same-stake accumulator
  • Much greater protection against losers

The Lucky 15 costs 15 times more for the same unit stake. But the insurance of singles and partial combinations makes it significantly more forgiving. For punters who back 4 selections expecting most but not necessarily all to win, the Lucky 15 is a better structural fit than a straight accumulator.

Lucky 15 vs Trixie and Yankee

Trixie covers 3 selections across 4 bets (3 doubles and 1 treble). No singles – needs at least 2 winners for any return.

Yankee covers 4 selections across 11 bets (6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 fourfold). No singles – needs at least 2 winners for any return.

Lucky 15 covers 4 selections across 15 bets, including 4 singles. Returns from 1 winner.

The Lucky 15 is the Yankee plus 4 singles. The extra 4 bets cost more but provide the safety net of getting something back from a single winner, which a Yankee does not.

Lucky 15 FAQs

What is a Lucky 15 bet?
