Acca Insurance on Football Betting – What is it and how do you use it?
Betting on football accumulators is becoming ever more popular and so punters need to get the edge when taking on the bookmakers – acca insurance is one of the best ways to do this.
When you bet on an accumulator there is nothing worse than one leg letting your bet down – well with acca insurance, this will be a thing of the past because one leg letting you down means you don’t lose completely – bookmakers who have acca insurance will refund your stake.
What is Acca Insurance?
When you bet on an accumulator (5+ selections) and one selection lets you down, your bet is normally a loser. Not if you use a bookmaker with acca insurance though. When using one of these bookmakers, you’ll get the cost of your bet refunded back to you, usually as a free bet but be sure to check the terms and conditions from each bookmaker. The qualifying bet has to adhere to the rules of the bookmaker you have chosen to use and usually, there will be a min odds requirement for either the whole bet, or the legs individually.
Acca insurance is great because it reduces the risk of your accumulator bets, ideal if you are new to betting on football or just aren’t very good at it!

What is the best acca insurance?
It is hard to determine the best acca insurance offer because it all depends what you want from the offer. Betfair’s acca edge promotion is great because it gives you your refund in cash rather than free bets, but the con of that is the odds of the original accumulator drops.
Paddy Power’s accumulator insurance is great because you only have to have four legs in the win markets football accumulator rather than the five you need to have at Betfred and Ladbrokes.
Betfair and Ladbrokes’ acca insurance offers are quite similar but Ladbrokes does just have the edge here because the minimum odds for each pick only has to be 1/10 or bigger, whereas at Betfred it needs to be 1/3. This would mean you couldn’t add a selection such as Manchester City to beat Fulham because they’d probably be around 1/7 to win the match.
How does acca insurance work?
When you bet on an accumulator there are usually two outcomes:
1. your bet wins or
2. your bet loses.
With acca insurance, this goes to three outcomes
1 your bet wins or
2 your bet loses or
3 one team let you down so you get a refund
Outcome 1 – your bet wins
When you place a football accumulator, you want to win. If all five selections are correct then the bet is a winner. Therefore there is no need for acca insurance to trigger. You get paid out as normal the full amount for your winning accumulator bet.
Outcome 2 – your bet loses
If two or more selections on your acca were incorrect, the bet is a loser. Acca insurance doesn’t apply here because more than one selection let your bet down. Unfortuately, this is just a straight loss – no payout and no refund.
Option 3 – one team let you down so you get a refund
Here is where acca insurance is triggered. For example, you bet on 5 teams to win their Saturday afternoon matches. Liverpool, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Leeds and Rochdale.
Four of the team win their matches but Bournemouth fail to win. Acca insurance now applies to this accumulator and so you are due a refund.
You will get the cost of your bet refunded back to you as a free bet (cash at Betfair) and the maximum refund will be £10.
Acca Insurance Terms and Conditions
Each bookie will have different T&Cs when it comes to their accumulator refund offers and promotions. These normally vary depending on the types of sports bets and when you use the free bet to spend on your next accumulator, you’ll find the stake not returned when collecting your winnings.
