The official weights for the 2026 Grand National have been announced, with I Am Maximus assigned the top weight of 11st 12lbs as the 2024 champion heads the list.
A maximum of 34 horses will line up at Aintree on Saturday 11 April at 4:00pm. With 55 horses remaining in the entries, the horses numbered 35 and below will need withdrawals to secure a run. The top 34 in the weights list are currently guaranteed a place in the field.
Grand National 2026 Top Weight – I Am Maximus
I Am Maximus carries 11st 12lbs as the highest-weighted horse in the 2026 Grand National – the same burden he carried when finishing second in 2025 after winning the race in 2024.
Top weight has historically been difficult to overcome in the National. The last horse to win carrying 11st 10lbs or more was Many Clouds in 2015. Carrying 11st 12lbs makes the task even harder, but Mullins’ training genius and the horse’s course knowledge are significant factors in his favour.
How the Grand National Weights Work
The Grand National is a handicap race, meaning each horse is assigned a weight to carry based on their official rating. The better the horse, the more weight they carry – designed to level the playing field across a diverse field.
The top-rated horse carries the maximum weight of 11st 10lbs (though the handicapper can adjust this). Every other horse’s weight is calculated relative to the top weight – a horse rated 10lbs lower carries 10lbs less.
Horses numbered 1-34 in the weights list are in the race as things stand. Horses numbered 35 and above are currently outside the final field and need withdrawals to get a run. Final declarations are confirmed on Tuesday 8 April.

Key Talking Points from the 2026 Weights
Willie Mullins dominance. Mullins has nine horses currently inside the final 34, including the top two in the weights – I Am Maximus (11-12) and Nick Rockett (11-11). The defending champion trained both of the last two winners. He also has Spanish Harlem, Lecky Watson, Champ Kiely, High Class Hero, Captain Cody and Quai De Bourbon in the field, plus Shanbally Kid in the reserves.
Gordon Elliott. Four horses currently inside the top 34 – Gerri Colombe (11-10), Firefox (11-4), Favori De Champdou (11-1) and Three Card Brag (11-0), with Stellar Story, Pied Piper and Will Do among the reserves.
The 34th horse. Panic Attack (10-5, Dan Skelton) is currently the last horse guaranteed a run at number 34. Top Of The Bill (Twiston-Davies) is first reserve at number 35, also on 10-5, meaning weight alone does not separate the two – trainer and connections will monitor the situation closely.
Johnnywho is currently first reserve at number 36, carrying 10-4 for Jonjo O’Neill. He won the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, which is historically a strong Grand National trial – two of the last four National winners ran in the Ultima. He needs one withdrawal to get in and is one of the most interesting horses just outside the cut.
L’Homme Presse is number 8 in the weights at 11-8 for Venetia Williams. The 11-year-old was a high-class staying chaser at his peak and carries strong credentials for the trip. Williams famously won the 2009 Grand National as a trainer with Mon Mome.
Jagwar is currently inside the final 34 at number 24, carrying 10-10 for Greenall and Guerriero. He finished second in the Ultima at Cheltenham and has Mark Walsh confirmed as the jockey.
The youngest horses in the field. Jagwar, Quai De Bourbon and Jordans are all seven-year-olds – the minimum age for the National. Young horses can win the race (Noble Yeats was seven in 2022), but it is rare, with the sweet spot historically being 8-10 year olds.
The oldest horse. Ain’t That A Shame (Tom Ellis) is 12 years old and currently number 42 – needs 8 withdrawals to get a run. The last horse older than 10 to win the National was in 2014.
What Weight Wins the Grand National?
Historical trends strongly suggest the optimal weight band for Grand National winners is 10st to 11st 6lbs. Horses carrying more than 11st 6lbs face a significant additional burden over 4m 2½f and 30 fences.
The last horse to win carrying 11st 10lbs or more was Many Clouds in 2015. I Am Maximus, carrying 11st 12lbs, is, attempting to defy that trend for the second consecutive year – he was narrowly denied in 2025 carrying the same weight.
Six of the current top 34 carry 11st or more (numbers 1-16 in the weights). Historically, the winner most commonly comes from the 10st 7lbs to 11st 4lbs band.
