13:25 Goodwood – Novice Stakes (2yo Fillies): Lily Pink
It’s hard to have strong opinions among these unknown quantities, but Lily Pink sets a fair standard on her debut, when she was just touched off at the line and looked sure to have learned plenty against a more experienced winner. She holds Group 1 entries in the autumn, suggesting connections think highly of her, and she’s bred to be good with no concerns about a soft surface. If she improves as expected, she’ll take a good one to beat.
13:40 Sandown – 7f Maiden (2yo Fillies): Flower Show
A wide-open affair that may be one for the notebook, but Flower Show is the one that most interests us. The Dubawi filly looks well suited to this trip on breeding, and the yard’s excellent 41% strike rate with its two-year-olds this season makes her hard to overlook. The market will be telling with these newcomers, but at this stage she’s the pick.
14:00 Goodwood – 7f Handicap: Ironwill (EW)
Ironwill is worth siding with each-way. A good winner at Newmarket three starts back off 85, he followed up with a fine second in a competitive Goodwood handicap behind the re-opposing Ghost Mode, before a mid-division effort in a deep York handicap. He returns here off the same mark as when second two starts ago, the soft ground is no issue, and on a track he’s proven over with weight off his rivals, he can run a big race.
14:15 Sandown – 1m2f Handicap: My Love Is King (NB)
Our next best, My Love Is King, looks better than a mark of 96. He has solid form this season, chasing home Arc fancy Maltese Cross on his reappearance and running another good second before appearing to be building to something bigger. He didn’t take to first-time cheekpieces in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot; they come off, a visor goes on to help him travel, and freshened up since, he has the ability to be well ahead of this mark.
14:35 Goodwood – 1m2f Handicap: Tony Montana
Tony Montana catches the eye for Amo Racing. Last seen running a cracker to finish a close fourth in a competitive Glorious Goodwood handicap — a decent piece of form — he now drops into a weaker race off the same mark. If he holds anything like that form, it’s hard to see him not going very close.
14:50 Sandown – Atalanta Stakes (Group 3): Secret Of Life (NAP)
Our NAP, Secret Of Life, looks a Group-level filly. A well-backed winner making all at this track at Listed level last time, she was never in trouble, and she’d won on soft ground the start before, so conditions are fine. She has the most scope in the field, and we like her chances of landing this Group 3 and continuing her upward curve.
15:10 Goodwood – Celebration Mile (Group 2): Seagulls Eleven
We have concerns about Zavateri over the mile, and Seagulls Eleven may prove a tough nut to crack. We’d expect him to make the running and be hard to pass. He beat a solid yardstick in Persica at Group 3 level at Epsom earlier in the season, and this Group 2 doesn’t look much stronger, while his previous course-and-distance win is a major plus at a unique track like Goodwood. He looks both the solid and the value play.
15:30 Sandown – Solario Stakes (Group 3): Sonic Angel
We’ve been impressed by Sonic Angel, who has won both career starts. A decent debut winner at Newcastle, he improved to bolt up at Kempton last time. He’s bred to be very good, the stable are in flying form after a Group 1 win in France last week, and the turf should hold no fears as he bids to complete the hat-trick and stay unbeaten.
Our Saturday NAP: Secret Of Life
Our strongest bet of the day is Secret Of Life in the Atalanta Stakes (14:50) — a progressive, scopey filly stepping up in grade with the ground in her favour. Our next best is My Love Is King in the 14:15, well treated off his mark with headgear changes to help. As always, these are tips based on form and profile, not guarantees.
