If your horse finishes second to the Starting Price favourite on a qualifying race at Boylesports, your stake is refunded as a free bet up to a maximum of £20. The offer runs on selected meetings throughout the year — including the Cheltenham Festival, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the Grand National — and applies to win singles and the win part of each-way singles. Opt-in is required.
This is one of Boylesports’ most consistent horse racing promotions. It does not pay out often — your horse needs to finish second and the SP favourite needs to win — but when it does, it turns what would have been a straight loss into a free bet you can redeploy on the next race.

How the Offer Works
The mechanic is straightforward. On a qualifying race, you back a horse to win. The race runs. If your selection finishes second and the SP favourite wins the race, Boylesports refund your stake as a free bet — up to £20 — regardless of which horse you backed or at what price.
Step by step:
- Opt in to the Money Back 2nd to SP Favourite promotion on the Boylesports promotions page
- Check which races are designated as qualifying races that day — these are listed on the promotions page
- Place a win single or each-way single on any horse in a qualifying race using real money (not a free bet)
- If your horse finishes second and the SP favourite wins, your losing win stake is refunded as a free bet up to £20
- The free bet is credited to your account within 24 hours and expires after 7 days
You can receive a refund on multiple qualifying races on the same day — one per race, not one per day. Only your first bet on each qualifying race counts. Any subsequent bets placed on the same race are settled as normal without the promotion applying.

What Counts as the SP Favourite?
The SP favourite is the horse returned with the lowest Starting Price at the off — not the morning favourite, not the pre-race market leader, but the horse at the shortest odds when the race starts. These can differ, sometimes significantly, if there is substantial market movement in the hours before the race.
If two or more horses are returned at the same SP — joint favourites — both are treated as the SP favourite for settlement purposes. This means if there are joint SP favourites and one wins, the offer pays out regardless of which of the joint favourites crossed the line first.
Unnamed second favourites do not qualify. If the race is settled on a first-past-the-post basis and there is a subsequent disqualification that changes the result, settlement is based on the first-past-the-post result for this promotion.
Which Meetings Does It Apply To?
Boylesports designate the qualifying meetings on a rolling basis, typically applying the offer to the biggest race days of the calendar. Based on past use, the offer has consistently appeared at:
- Cheltenham Festival — all four days, all races
- Royal Ascot — all five days
- Glorious Goodwood
- Grand National meeting at Aintree
- Punchestown Festival
- Galway Festival
- Selected midweek and weekend meetings throughout the year
Check the Boylesports promotions page on the morning of any major race day to confirm which meetings and races are active for that day. The qualifying races are listed clearly alongside the opt-in button.
Using the Offer at the Cheltenham Festival
The Cheltenham Festival is where this promotion is most valuable. Boylesports have consistently applied it across all four days and all races at Cheltenham, making it one of their strongest Festival features for existing customers.
The offer suits Cheltenham particularly well because of the nature of the racing. The Festival regularly produces races where a horse runs the race of its life, is beaten only by the market leader, and would ordinarily return nothing to its backer. The money-back concession turns those frustrating seconds into a free bet for the next race.
The classic Cheltenham scenario: You back a 10/1 shot in a Championship race. The 6/4 favourite wins with your selection running on into second, beaten by a length. Without the promotion, your bet is a loser. With the offer active and your opt-in in place, your win stake comes back as a free bet up to £20.
Each-way note: If you placed a £10 each-way bet (£10 win, £10 place) and your horse finishes second, the place part of your bet wins normally. The promotion refunds the win stake only — so you receive the place return as cash plus a free bet for the losing win stake. On a 10/1 shot finishing second, the place return at 1/4 odds is 2.5/1 on your £10 place stake — £35 returned — plus a £10 free bet for the win part.
Cheltenham tip: On days with multiple qualifying races, prioritise placing your first bet on each race before the off rather than waiting to see how the market moves. Only your first bet on each qualifying race counts, so if you place a second bet on a race you have already bet on, it will not qualify even if your original selection finishes second to the favourite.

How to Get the Most from This Offer
Opt in early. The opt-in is required and must be completed before you place your qualifying bet. If you forget to opt in and your horse finishes second to the favourite, the refund will not be triggered. Make opting in part of your morning routine on any major race day.
Target competitive races rather than big-field handicaps. In a 25-runner handicap, the SP favourite often starts at 6/1 or 7/1 and the market is genuinely wide open — the chance of the SP favourite winning and your horse finishing second specifically is relatively small. In a 10-runner Grade 1 where the field is led by a short-price market leader, the scenario is far more likely to occur. Championship races at Cheltenham, where a 4/5 favourite winning and your 8/1 selection filling second is a realistic outcome, are where the offer adds most practical value.
Use it alongside longer-priced selections. The refund is capped at £20 and is a free bet rather than cash. On a £20 win stake, you get the full £20 back as a free bet. On a £50 win stake, you still only get £20 back. This means the offer is proportionally more valuable on smaller stakes — there is limited benefit in staking significantly more than £20 on a qualifying race in anticipation of the refund.
Free bet expiry. The free bet is credited within 24 hours and expires after 7 days. At Cheltenham, where the Festival runs across four consecutive days, a free bet earned on Tuesday morning can be used across the remaining three days without any expiry concern. On a standalone race day, make sure you have a qualifying bet lined up to use the free bet before the 7-day window closes.
Boylesports Money Back 2nd vs Coral Beaten by a Neck
The closest comparable offer in the market is Coral’s Beaten by a Neck promotion, which refunds your stake in cash (not a free bet) if your horse finishes second beaten by a neck or less, regardless of which horse won. The two offers suit different scenarios:
| Feature | Boylesports Money Back 2nd to SP Fav | Coral Beaten by a Neck |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger condition | Finish 2nd to the SP favourite | Finish 2nd beaten by a neck or less |
| Winning horse | Must be the SP favourite | Any winner |
| Refund format | Free bet | Cash |
| Maximum refund | £20 | £10 |
| Opt-in | Yes | Yes |
Boylesports pays more (£20 vs £10) but requires the specific condition of the SP favourite winning. Coral’s offer pays less but triggers on any race where the margin is a neck or less — a more common scenario that does not depend on which horse won. Both are worth holding if you bet regularly at Cheltenham, as they cover different race scenarios.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to opt in every day or just once?
Check the Boylesports promotions page for the specific terms on any given day. Some ongoing offers require a single opt-in that remains active; others require a fresh opt-in for each qualifying event. As a general rule, confirm your opt-in status before placing your first qualifying bet each day.
Does the offer apply to each-way bets?
It applies to the win part of an each-way bet only. If you place a £10 each-way bet and your horse finishes second to the SP favourite, your £10 win stake is refunded as a free bet. The £10 place stake is settled normally — you receive the place return as cash.
What if my horse finishes second but the winner was not the SP favourite?
The refund does not apply. The offer is specifically triggered by the SP favourite winning the race and your selection finishing second to it. If any other horse wins, the bet is settled as a normal loser regardless of where your selection finished.
Can I receive a refund on more than one race per day?
Yes. You can receive a free bet refund on multiple qualifying races on the same day — one per race. The restriction is that only your first bet on each individual race counts, not that you are limited to one refund per day.
What happens to the free bet if I do not use it within 7 days?
The free bet expires after 7 days and cannot be reinstated. Use it within the expiry window. At Cheltenham, a free bet earned on Tuesday is valid through to the end of Friday’s racing and beyond, so expiry is not typically an issue during the Festival.
Does the offer apply in Boylesports betting shops?
Yes. The offer applies to both online and in-shop customers in the UK and Ireland.
