1:25 Newbury — Aston Park Stakes (Group 3) 1m4f
Tip: KALPANA
The opener from Newbury is the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes over 1m4f, and it’s hard to get away from Kalpana, who is a Group 1 winner and brings the best form to the table by a long way.
She’s likely to improve for this, but she ran a belter on seasonal reappearance at Group 1 level last term, so if she’s anywhere near that fitness level for this year’s return, she’ll be winning this race. Her class advantage over the field is significant.
1:42 Newmarket — Mile Handicap
Tip: TWISTING PHYSICS (NAP)
The first race live from Newmarket is a mile handicap, and Twisting Physics is the NAP of the day. I suspect Twisting Physics is a good bit better than his current mark, and I’m hopeful he’ll be able to show that here.
A winner on two of his four career starts, his seasonal reappearance at Newbury was highly promising. Despite not settling, he rattled home to finish a close 5th there. Hopefully, that run has taken the buzz out of him a bit, and if he improves a touch as expected for that outing, he can win this contest.
2:00 Newbury — Childwickbury Stud Fillies Trial Stakes (Listed) 1m2f
Tip: SACRED GROUND
The Listed race over 1m2f for three-year-olds, and I’ll be with Sacred Ground here, who looked like she’d come on a bundle for her reappearance effort at Newmarket last week.
The winner, Jennifer Jane, led them a merry dance there, and Sacred Ground ran keen and looked in need of the run. She holds Esna on that form, and I’d expect them both to improve similar amounts. She’s bred to be pretty good, and the yard is in flying form this week.
2:35 Newbury — Lockinge Stakes (Group 1) 1m
Tip: ZEUS OLYMPIOS
The feature race of the afternoon is the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over the mile trip. I think a lot of Zeus Olympios, and I think we’ll see a much-improved display with his seasonal reappearance effort behind him.
He’s a big horse, so he’s entitled to improve for that a good bit. Last season, he was really progressive — winning all four starts working his way up the ranks. The last of those was in a decent Group 2 contest and he more than proved he’s a horse of Group 1 level, winning decisively. He can show that ability today if stall 1 doesn’t leave him isolated.
2:50 Newmarket — 7f Handicap
Tip: I STILL HAVE FAITH (E/W)
I like I Still Have Faith each way in this tricky 7f handicap. I thought he ran a big race here last time out, finishing 5th — but that didn’t tell the whole story.
He won his group, and he did race a tad keenly, so it was a very encouraging run. He’s drawn next to the favourite today in stall 11, and I’m hopeful he’ll be on the right part of the track. If he can settle a touch better, I’d expect him to hit the frame again at least.
3:10 Newbury — Carnarvon Stakes 6f
Tip: HAVANA HURRICANE (E/W)
The Carnarvon Stakes is a three-year-old contest over 6 furlongs, and I think Havana Hurricane offers some value here.
He was a really solid two-year-old last season, running well on every occasion he made it to the track. He has some decent form in the book and was a winner at Royal Ascot. I don’t think he’ll lack for fitness — he started the campaign last season on the front foot and I’d be hopeful he can do the same today. A strong pace with a stiff finish is ideal for his running style.
3:27 Newmarket — 6f Handicap
Tip: TABBY
The final race live from HQ on ITV is a 6f handicap, and the one for me is Tabby. This unexposed four-year-old could have a lot more to come for the James Tate yard this season.
Last seen being a good winner at Southwell on his second start for the yard. That came after an encouraging runner-up effort at Wolves. This is his turf debut, which raises a question, but I see no reason why he won’t be fine on it. The highly promising claimer Jack Callan takes off 3lb, which is a further plus.
3:45 Newbury — London Gold Cup Handicap 1m2f
Tip: SPYCE (E/W)
We close proceedings on ITV with the always competitive and informative London Gold Cup Handicap — a race for improving three-year-olds over 1m2f. Spyce for the Alan King yard is interesting here.
There was a decent amount of promise in his three starts last season — improving from his debut to win a maiden at Yarmouth before running well at Group 3 level at Sandown to finish 4th. He returned to action at Sandown behind potential star colt Raaheeb, but he was a big drifter there and looked in need of the run. He now enters handicap company for the first time, and I expect to see him improve for it.
