13:30 Chester – Stand Cup Stakes (Listed): Plage De Havre
We start at Chester with Plage De Havre, who looks ready for a crack outside handicap company after winning a competitive York handicap last month. This prominent racer should be well suited by Chester, and stall 1 lets him grab an ideal early position. There’ll be a bit of cut in the ground — exactly what he wants — and he looks the value call in here.
13:45 Doncaster – Champagne Stakes (Group 2): Desert Castle
Desert Castle looks tough to beat. The Godolphin two-year-old was an impressive debut winner last month, bolting up at Newmarket by three lengths eased down, and the son of Frankel looks a colt of serious potential. Expect him to back that up at Group 2 level. There’s plenty of unexposed types in here, but so is he — and he’s the one who fits the “could be anything” category.
14:05 Chester – Watergate Cup: Spirit Mixer
It’s hard to get away from Spirit Mixer, who looks aimed at this by the Balding stable. Winner of this contest in both 2024 and 2025, he returns off effectively an 8lb lower mark with Alfie Redman claiming 7lb. He’s been a little in and out this year, but has shown enough on a couple of occasions to suggest that, even at eight, he isn’t done yet. Soft ground is fine, and while some rivals may treat this as an afterthought, connections will surely have had it as a primary target.
14:20 Doncaster – Portland Handicap: Twilight Calls (EW)
Twilight Calls is worth an each-way interest. A Group 1 performer in his day, he’s bounced right back to form for the Richard Spencer stable, winning three of his last four including at Goodwood last time, where he stayed on strongly to get up close home. A 4lb rise looks fair, and there’s no reason he can’t keep defying the handicapper on his back class. He should get a nice tow into the race from the likes of Apollo One, and a bold bid is expected if the draw is kind.
14:55 Doncaster – Park Stakes (Group 2): Flora Of Bermuda (NAP)
Flora Of Bermuda is our NAP — the one in here who’s shown she’s not scared of getting her head in front. A winner of three of her last five, comfortably the best win ratio in the field, this 7f Doncaster test could be ideal for a fourth. She ran a little keen behind Notable Speech last time and is better than that, and this is a decent drop in class for a filly who was a Group 3 winner at Goodwood before that run, with plenty of placed form at Group 1 level. The race may turn tactical, where her potent turn of foot should prove telling.
15:35 Doncaster – St Leger (Group 1): Enceladus
For the final Classic of the year, it’s hard to get away from Enceladus. His latest win at Goodwood was taking — he found plenty under pressure and showed a willing, gutsy attitude to win well, crossing the line looking the perfect St Leger type. His two best runs have come in his last two, stepped up to 1m4f for the first time, and another career best looks likely over this extra two furlongs given his stamina and courage. A horse to like a lot with a big future, he can land another big prize for Joseph O’Brien.
16:15 Doncaster – Mile Handicap: Inspired (EW)
We end with Inspired each-way, a horse thriving in career-best form. A winner of three of his last four, including at York last week, he escapes a penalty for that latest success, so it’s a case of striking while the iron is hot. Claiming jockey Jack Nicholls is great value for his 3lb claim, leaving Inspired on a feather weight of 8st 5lb. This is a step up in class, but he looks up to it.
Our Saturday NAP: Flora Of Bermuda
Our strongest bet of the day is Flora Of Bermuda in the Park Stakes (14:55) — a progressive, front-running filly with the best strike rate in the field, dropping in class for a 7f test that should suit. As always, it’s a tip based on her form and profile, not a guarantee.
