Goodwoood day 5 tips

Our NAP for the final day of Glorious Goodwood is AL AASY in the 14:25 Glorious Stakes, with FAR ABOVE DREAM the next best each-way in the Stewards’ Cup and VALEDICTORY fancied to complete a hat-trick in the opener.

Day five closes the Qatar Goodwood Festival with the Stewards’ Cup cavalry charge as its centrepiece — a 28-runner sprint handicap and the biggest betting heat of the week. ITV screens the first five races live. Here are our selections for all seven.

13:50 Goodwood — Highclere Castle Gin Summer Handicap

VALEDICTORY is 2-2 since being equipped with cheekpieces and the Godolphin runner can land a hat-trick here.

John and Thady Gosden’s Cracksman colt won over C&D two starts ago in a race that is working out well; the fifth horse home has since won a valuable prize at Epsom, while the sixth landed the Northumberland Plate. Both reoppose.

That victory was followed up at Newmarket in July, beating Roaring Legend and Goblet Of Fire to land the Heritage Trophy, and the handicapper has only pushed him up 3lbs. That rise may not be enough to stop him going in again, assuming he continues in similar form and continues to show improvement for the application of the headgear.

14:25 Goodwood — Coral Glorious Stakes (Group 3) — NAP

AL AASY has won this race for the past two years, and he can bring up the treble here for William Haggas.

The Sea The Stars gelding has a good record here, winning two of his three starts at this venue, and he won twice in all last term, also landing the Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown although his campaign ended on a low note when failing to cope with soft ground at Newbury behind Hamish.

Having gone close on his seasonal return when beaten just a half-length in the Newbury John Porter Stakes, he resumed winning ways by landing the odds at Beverley in July, taking a Listed contest, and he ought to remain competitive back at this venue as he bids to win this race for the third straight year.

15:00 Goodwood — Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2)

SANTORINI STAR surely wasn’t herself when disappointing in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot when last seen. However, William Haggas’ charge can bounce back here with an improved performance.

The Golden Horn had been in good fettle before that poor run, winning four of her seven starts last term, which included one here and also the Group Two Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster.

She returned from a break to quickly pick up where she had left off, adding the Group Two Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket to her resume, and she almost followed up when taking in a French Group One where she was denied a short head by Caballo De Mar.

That represents very solid form and forgiven her lacklustre run last time, she can get back on track here.

15:35 Goodwood — Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) — NB, each-way

FAR ABOVE DREAM (EW) is 3-3 over course and distance and the Far Above gelding can uphold his perfect record at the track.

James Owen’s charge won three times in all last term on a variety of ground conditions and he’s continued his form into the current campaign, adding wins here and at Newbury two starts ago before most recently finishing fourth in the Wokingham behind Double Rush having met a little trouble in running.

Not beaten far, he split horses that have both finished in the frame in the Group Three Hackwood Stakes and racing off an unchanged mark he could make his presence felt in a hugely competitive cavalry charge.

16:10 Goodwood — Phase Eight Handicap — each-way

EGOLI (EW) looked to have a bright future last term, winning two of his first three races prior to contesting in Group company, finishing sixth here in the Richmond and fifth in the Gimcrack although he didn’t add to his tally.

Ralph Beckett’s charge has taken a couple of runs to find his form this campaign having switched to handicaps; but he got back on the scoresheet when gaining a narrow verdict over Yorkshire at Doncaster last month and only 2lbs higher here the No Nay Never gelding could follow up.

That was his first try at seven furlongs, but he got the better of his rival in a sustained duel to the line and he could have improvement still to come with cheekpieces also now fitted.

16:45 Goodwood — British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes

REGENCY ROYAL ran a promising first race when beaten just under two lengths by Towelontheterrace at Chester last month and with that experience under his belt the Calyx colt can go one better here.

Racing in midfield, he made eye-catching late headway in the last furlong and kept on well without threatening to overhaul the winner. However it was a solid introduction and the outing won’t have been lost on him so improvement can be expected.

This looks pretty open and it should be an informative contest. Andrew Balding does have a decent record here however which swings the vote in his favour.

17:20 Goodwood — Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap — each-way

EL MATADOR (EW) is knocking on the door and this could be the day he gets back to winning ways.

Ralph Beckett’s charge struck twice last term, scoring at Salisbury and Chepstow respectively although he disappointed here next time out although he didn’t have much luck in that contest.

He’s made the frame in all four starts this campaign, most recently when beaten just over one length by Treble Tee on the all-weather at Newcastle, finishing third. The handicapper has left him unchanged despite that good effort and his current consistency can see him in the mix.

Stewards’ Cup preview: the big betting heat of the week

The Stewards’ Cup is the centrepiece of Goodwood’s final day and one of the most valuable and competitive sprint handicaps of the entire British season. Run down Goodwood’s straight six furlongs with a maximum field of 28, it’s a true cavalry charge where the draw, the pace and a clear run all matter as much as the form.

Our pick is FAR ABOVE DREAM, unbeaten in three starts over this course and distance and better than his mark suggests on his Wokingham fourth. In a race this competitive, a horse with a proven C&D record and a fair handicap mark is exactly the profile to side with — and with big-field each-way terms and extra places widely available, he’s our each-way call as well as our next best on the card.

Where to bet on Glorious Goodwood Day 5

The Stewards’ Cup is the one race of the week where each-way terms genuinely swing the value: with 28 runners, bookmakers offering extra places can pay out on more than the standard positions. It’s worth comparing terms before staking.
