13:50 Goodwood — Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap

The latest big summer racing festival kicks off on Tuesday with day one of Glorious Goodwood. An eight-race card at the Sussex venue is spearheaded by the Group One Goodwood Cup and ITV Racing have coverage of the first five races on their afternoon broadcast.

YABHER (13/2) was possibly amiss when disappointing in the John Smith’s Cup at York earlier in the month, and it might be worth giving another chance to William Haggas’ charge.

The Sea The Stars gelding is a course and distance winner, scoring here on his return to action in May where he ran out an impressive six lengths’ victor over City Of Delight. He had won two of his previous starts before that victory towards the tail end of last campaign and he remains a progressive sort despite his disappointing effort last time.

There was nothing in the tank when Jason Hart asked him for an effort at York latest, but he wasn’t unfancied for that contest and it wouldn’t be a shock if he were to bounce back here.

14:25 Goodwood — Coral Vintage Stakes (Group 2) — NAP

AL HUDAIBA (13/8) is likely to prove a tough nut to crack having won all three completed starts, most recently in a Group Two at Newmarket when beating Abraham Lincoln by a short-head.

The Dark Angel colt looked a difficult ride that day, hanging markedly left from two out; but he kept finding and hauled in the winner late on with reopposing Pikachu back in third. That form has been boosted by a subsequent Listed winner coming out of that race.

Charlie Appleby reaches for blinkers now, which could help him to better focus his energies, and if he can further improve, he can win again.

15:00 Goodwood — HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) — NB

QIRAT (9/2) is 3-3 over this course – twice over the trip – and Ralph Beckett’s charge can uphold that excellent course record.

Last season’s Sussex Stakes winner went off the boil afterwards, and the Showcasing gelding has taken a couple of runs to hit top form this season. Equipped with a first-time tongue tie, he resumed winning ways at York last month and with the headgear retained, he can go well here.

That latest victory came in a Group Three over this seven-furlong trip, and it was perhaps a switch to more forceful tactics in the headgear which provided the improvement. He’ll have to back that up although he could very well do so at a venue that clearly suits him.

15:35 Goodwood — Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) — each-way

A chance is taken that RAHIEBB (EW) 11/1 can bounce back from his effort in the Ascot Gold Cup, where Roger Varian’s charge probably didn’t see out the trip and back at this lesser yardage the Frankel colt can do better.

Progressive last term without winning, finishing fourth here in the Gordon Stakes and getting to within a neck of reopposing Scandinavia in the St Leger Stakes, he struck at the first time of asking this term with victory at York in the Yorkshire Cup, although he finished well beaten when last seen.

He shaped like a non-stayer that day, held up in midfield before making a forward move coming into the straight, although he weakened out of things from the two-furlong marker and he could be better suited by this drop in trip. Having already shown he can handle this track, he’s worth another chance although he does have a bit to do to reverse that form with Scandinavia and Trawlerman.

However, if the field remains eight runners then he could well grab one of the places.

16:10 Goodwood — Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap — each-way

A hugely competitive sprint and NAANA’S SPARKLE (EW) 14/1 is taken to run another big race at this venue.

Twice a winner last term for Alice Haynes, which included over C&D at this meeting twelve months ago, the Twilight Son gelding won at the first time of asking for current handler Lemos Souza. A lesser run followed at Doncaster, but he bounced back to winning ways latest on the all-weather at Southwell, and he’s only 3lbs higher back on turf.

This is a career-high mark, but there’s a suspicion he may still be improving, and the Southwell form took a small boost when the runner-up went close in a valuable Newmarket handicap next time. With a win and a placed effort from two runs here, he might be worth chancing to deliver a good run although there’s certainly no shortage of pace in opposition.

16:45 Goodwood — British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes

SEVERN COUNCILS (11/2) must be pretty well regarded at home given he made his racecourse debut in Listed company just eleven days ago and quickly turned out in a lesser grade, which could see Richard Hughes’ charge get off the mark at the second attempt.

The Sioux Nation colt was green throughout that first outing, making only some modest late gains when eventually finishing seventh of ten runners at Newbury, beaten around six lengths.

That experience should bring him on considerably, and many of the yard’s runners do improve for a run, so a better performance here wouldn’t shock in what ought to be an informative event.

17:20 Goodwood — Bolney English Wine Fillies’ Handicap — each-way

SI GRASS (EW) 14/1 is lightly raced and may have better to come switching back to turf after some good efforts on the all-weather.

Charlie Johnston’s charge was beaten just over one length by Inis Morr on his debut at Newmarket; that one has since won at Listed level and placed in Group company, including the latest in the French Oaks.

The Churchill filly was a winner at Southwell in January when returning from a break, and she almost followed up at the same venue the following month, where she was perhaps just given too much to do.

She returns here following another absence, but that needn’t be a worry, and the yard often does well here. She’s given the vote on her juvenile form in the hope she can keep improving and back on grass she could give a good account.

17:55 Goodwood — World Pool Bet With The Tote EBF Fillies’ Handicap — each-way

SECRET HISTORY (EW) 8/1 has won three of her last four starts, most recently scoring at Newmarket earlier in the month, and Ed Walker’s charge can continue her upward curve to strike again.

The Ardad filly shaped well without winning on both her starts last term, and having got off the mark on her reappearance at Chelmsford in January, she then doubled up with victory at Wetherby in April. She probably failed to stay the mile at Carlisle, so it wasn’t a surprise to see her win back at seven furlongs latest, and she has the scope to cope dropping back to six furlongs having won at the distance previously.

Two of those horses she beat last time have since acquitted themselves well in a better race, and a good claimer offsets her rise in the weights for this latest outing. Assuming she isn’t caught out by this track, then she could go close.
