ITV Racing Tips Friday: Doncaster St Leger Day 2 Best Bets

ITV Racing continues at Doncaster on Friday for day two of the St Leger Festival, and our NAP is Silver Lake to extend her winning run — part of a selection for all five races, headed by the Group 2 Doncaster Cup and Flying Childers Stakes.

13:15 Doncaster – Flying Scotsman Stakes (Listed): Nabati

It’s hard to escape the claims of Nabati, whose near-miss behind Arapaho Gold in Listed company has been strongly franked since — that winner has gone on to land the Gimcrack at York. Charlie Appleby’s Night Of Thunder colt arrives on the back of a Newmarket win last month to add to his Yarmouth debut success, and was beaten only a neck in between, with the third from that race also placing at Group Three level. The extra furlong should bring more improvement, as he looked ready for a step up in trip last time — briefly outpaced before running on well as the front two pulled clear. He looks the one to beat.

13:50 Doncaster – Leger Legends Classified Stakes: Wield

Wield showed improved form for a first-time tongue-tie when narrowly missing out at Southwell last month, and Joseph Parr’s gelding could go one better if the headgear has the same effect. The Showcasing gelding is yet to win and his profile has been patchy in handicaps, but his latest run was a step forward. He’s only up 1lb for his turf return, and softer ground may suit given his two best efforts came on the all-weather. Assuming the headgear works again, with Joe Fanning aboard, he could be capable of a big run.

14:25 Doncaster – Flying Childers Stakes (Group 2): Flann Sunna

Flann Sunna may well have been amiss when disappointing at Goodwood, and the Blue Point colt is worth another chance. Simon and Ed Crisford’s colt had been impressive in racking up wins at Windsor and Ascot, the latter a five-length conditions success over Mysterious Times — form that looks solid. He travelled well into the Goodwood race before finding little when asked, and that run can be forgiven on his earlier efforts. He shouldn’t lack the speed for this drop to the minimum trip, and freshened up since Goodwood, he can bounce back.

15:00 Doncaster – Doncaster Cup (Group 2): Queenstown

Queenstown returned from a 300-day layoff to score readily in the Irish St Leger Trial, and Aidan O’Brien’s stayer can build on that to double up. The Galileo gelding was winning for the first time in almost three years, but has run a string of solid races in defeat — including last season’s Ebor and two placed efforts in French Group company, notably behind re-opposing Caballo De Mar in the Prix du Cadran. He wasn’t beaten far that day and may have paid for racing freely. Any softening of the ground is no issue, and fitter and fresher for his return, he wouldn’t surprise if going close.

15:35 Doncaster – Premier Fillies’ Handicap: Silver Lake (NAP)

Silver Lake has gone from strength to strength since being fitted with a tongue-tie and stepping up in trip, and she’s our NAP to continue her winning run. The Night Of Thunder filly has won her last three, most recently beating Pendella in a valuable York handicap, getting up late to score by a head — a finish suggesting a stiffer stamina test will suit, so this quarter-mile could unlock more. She’s up 6lb for that win, but with just six career runs and clear potential for better, she can keep the run going.

Our Friday NAP: Silver Lake

Our strongest bet of the day is Silver Lake in the Premier Fillies’ Handicap (15:35). A lightly-raced, progressive filly on a three-timer, stepping up in trip with more improvement likely, she’s the highlight of our day-two card.
