What Is the NAP for Friday’s ITV Racing?

Our NAP is Musical Times in the 14:57 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. Charlie Appleby’s filly looked top-drawer when she scorched to a seven-length win in the May Hill Stakes, a performance that sent her to the head of the 1000 Guineas ante-post market. Unbeaten and open to more improvement, she looks the bet of the day in the feature.

Our next best is Regency Royal in the 14:05 British EBF Final at York – an impressive Chester winner who can follow up.

13:15 Newmarket – Cornwallis Stakes (Group 3): Flann Sunna

Flann Sunna can get back to winning ways after going close in the Flying Childers at Doncaster last time. A winner of his first two starts, he didn’t seem to handle the track when fifth in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, but he bounced back, dropping to five furlongs latest, only caught close home by Final Objective after hitting the front inside the final furlong. The quicker surface here should suit the Blue Point colt better and he ought to appreciate a strong pace, so with more to come he can make his presence felt.

13:50 Newmarket – Oh So Sharp Stakes (Group 3, Fillies): Minkaas

It could be worth chancing Minkaas to build on her recent fourth in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes. Terry Kent’s filly got off the mark at the third attempt over six furlongs here in August, then caught the eye with her finishing effort stepped up in trip latest, keeping on well for fourth after losing ground at the start. She was only just over a length behind subsequent Group 2 winner Nabati and finished ahead of a next-time winner, so there may be better to come over this trip – a big run would be no surprise.

14:05 York – British EBF £100,000 Final: Regency Royal (NB)

Our next best. Regency Royal got off the mark with an impressive win at Chester last month and can follow up. Andrew Balding’s Calyx colt shaped well on debut but didn’t handle the Goodwood undulations next time, before soft ground proved no issue latest as he came through to lead at the furlong pole and sprinted clear of Green Star with the field strung out behind. Likely to have more improvement in him, he can go close again.

14:25 Newmarket – Challenge Stakes (Group 2): Time To Turn

Time To Turn can get back on the scoresheet returning to calmer waters after a tough assignment in France. Charlie Appleby’s colt may ideally want softer ground, but he ran well on a quicker surface on his reappearance in the Heron Stakes before struggling in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville. That French form has been franked since, with the runner-up, fourth and fifth all winning Group 1 races, so back in easier company over seven furlongs he ought to be competitive and has every chance of going close.

14:40 York – William Hill Finale Handicap: Harper Violet

Harper Violet turned in an impressive performance to break her maiden last time out and can follow up if she stays the longer trip. Karl Burke’s Lope De Vega filly made all to win by eight lengths at Carlisle on just her second start of the season, and while a handicap debut off 87 is tougher, she may have been let in lightly. That win came over 1m3f, and she has an extra three furlongs to tackle here, but she did not look at the end of her tether last time, and the stronger stamina test could bring more out of her.

14:57 Newmarket – Fillies’ Mile (Group 1): Musical Times (NAP)

Our NAP, in the day’s feature. Musical Times can extend her unbeaten record and prove a tough nut to crack. Charlie Appleby’s Lope De Vega filly was landing a hat-trick when scorching seven lengths clear in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster, travelling powerfully and quickening away in a performance that put her top of the 1000 Guineas ante-post market. That win came on softer ground, but an earlier Yarmouth success came on a quicker surface, so conditions should be no issue, and still improving, she can strike again at the top level.

15:12 Chepstow – Welsh Champion Hurdle (Handicap): Gibbs Island

Gibbs Island’s form figures don’t catch the eye, but Tom Lacey’s gelding can make a winning reappearance. He has won first time up for the past two seasons, including at this fixture last October over course and distance off this same mark, and was then highly tried throughout the campaign – including when seventh in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, where he may have finished closer but for being carried left at the last. Proven fresh and over C and D, he is worth chancing to post a big run off the same rating as his win here 12 months ago.

15:30 Newmarket – Old Rowley Cup Handicap: Devil’s Peak

Devil’s Peak got back to winning ways, landing a decent pot at Doncaster last time and can stay competitive despite a 5lb rise. John and Thady Gosden’s Camelot gelding beat re-opposing Turty Tree at Newbury over this sort of trip in July and went close at Goodwood before his stamina looked stretched in the Melrose at York. Back at this distance last time he saw off Alfred Wincham by over a length doing it well, and with possibly more to come over the trip he can defy the higher mark.

15:43 Chepstow – Persian War Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2): Cosmic Connection

Cosmic Connection went from strength to strength last term and can pick up where he left off. Chris Gordon’s Getaway gelding won three of his four starts after switching from points, including a handicap win over course and distance and a defeat of Race To Base at Sandown last time. Now rated 9lb higher, he could have more to offer; the longer trip will be no issue given his point-to-point background, and the form of his C and D win is working out well – this is a tougher, Graded test, but he can go close.
