ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 18th July from Newbury, Ripon and Market Rasen

ITV Racing Tips

1:55 Newbury

We open at Newbury with the Stevenson Stakes, a listed race over 1m2f.

I have landed on AL ZANETI (5/1) NB here in the opener. The Godolphin 3-year-old is still unexposed and brings plenty of potential to the table for this listed event. He’s a Group 3 winner and has come runner-up twice at that level, so dropping to listed company is an obvious plus. He was last seen finishing 6th in the Dante Stakes, but that was at a time when the yard’s horses weren’t running too well. Freshened up since and with Buick picking him over Arabian Light, I like his chances.

2:10 Market Rasen

Summer jumps action on ITV at 2:10 with the Summer Handicap Hurdle over the extended 2-mile trip first up.

It is MOJITO DES MOTTES (13/2) NAP for me in here. The 4-year-old of Ben Pauling comes into this off a fine effort last time out, where he stayed on strongly to be a never-nearer 2nd come the line. That was his first run after a wind operation, and they say the second time is when to catch them, as they now know they can’t breathe better. His back form in France is solid, and there is definitely scope off his current mark. Harry Cobden takes the rides, and he’ll be itching to bag an ITV winner for his new boss JP McManus on terrestrial television.

2:25 Newbury

Next up at Newbury is a handicap over the extended 2 miles.

It’s BAILEYS KHELSTAR (4/1) that I like in here. Clearly thriving at present, he comes here looking to complete the hat-trick. He stayed on strongly to win last time out, showing that stamina is certainly a strong suit. He’s only up 3lb for that, and I think he can go on again. Rossa Ryan is a decent jockey booking.

2:45 Market Rasen

We head back to Market Rasen for the competitive Summer Plate Handicap Chase over the extended 2m5f.

It is SOUL ICON (13/2) I like for that man again, Harry Cobden. Soul Icon relishes a quick surface, and he’ll get that here. He’s run well in two competitive handicap chasers before he fell at the Canal Turn in the Topham last time out. This is a weaker race, and Cobden has won the last three renewals, so he’s the man to be with. Strong chance.

3:02 Newbury

The 3:02 is the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes over 6 furlongs.

I’ll chance JASOUR (17/2) in this, who no doubt has the ability to win at this level, but putting his best foot forward is often the issue. However, this is a decent drop in class from the Group 1 races he’s recently been competing in, and if PJ McDonald can get a nice bit of cover early, today might be the day he gets his head back in front. He’s a huge price on ability alone, and it’s worth a chance at this level.

3:15 Ripon

We have one race live from Ripon, which is a handicap run over 1m4f.

I think PRINCE OF THE SEAS (9/2) looks ready to get his head back in front, and he can do that today. There has been plenty of promise on his last two starts, and he was unlucky not to win last time out, where he just got going a tad too late to go down by a neck at the line. Off the same mark today, compensation may well await.

3:37 Newbury

We finish proceedings with the trappy Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes. A 2-year-old race over 5f.

Very difficult, but I’ve landed on ETIENNE (11/2) for the shrewd Richard Spencer yard. Bred to be a decent two-year-old, his debut effort was full of promise when he just got touched off, finishing a good second by a solid yardstick in Weekend Roar, who had experience on his side. With that run under his belt, running in this sprint off a featherweight, I think connections have had this in mind. I think he’ll take a decent step forward and go very close in this competitive affair.
