13:35 Market Rasen: Juvenile Hurdle

DON DANDY looks a potentially useful ex-French recruit and is worth siding with on his first start for Olly Murphy. The Sea Moon gelding showed up well in France, winning at the third attempt with a defeat of Le Sire at Compiegne when last seen in April – and that runner-up has since won at Auteuil. All three of his French starts came on testing ground, so conditions here should suit, and with more to come having joined a strong yard, he looks the way to go in the TV opener despite carrying a penalty.

13:50 Aintree: Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase

CLUB DE REVE was progressive over hurdles last term, winning twice at Kempton including the Grade Two Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle, and Harry Derham’s gelding can make a winning reappearance over fences. He beat Kocktail Bleu by three lengths when last seen, and that day’s beaten field includes a subsequent Grade One hurdles winner, so he brings classy form into this. He switches to fences here, but he has a point-to-point background – runner-up on his only start in that sphere for Donnchadh Doyle – and he may have been let in lightly off this opening mark.

14:10 Market Rasen: Veterans’ Handicap Chase

TOMMY’S OSCAR may well have needed the run over an inadequate trip at Kelso last time – his first outing in more than five months – and Ann Hamilton’s veteran is taken to build on it over this more suitable distance. The tough sort is no stranger to winning, landing his latest success at Carlisle in March before tackling valuable contests at Haydock and Perth. Last of four at Kelso, he was not beaten far despite his effort flattening out up the hill. He will be sharper for it, acts on the ground, and the handicapper has eased him 2lb.

14:25 Aintree: Vieux Lion Rouge Veterans’ Handicap Chase

None of this quintet can be overlooked, so KNAPPERS HILL is only a tentative choice, partly on account of a previous win here in a bumper. A smart hurdler for Paul Nicholls, he won two Grade Two contests over hurdles and opened his chase account in a Grade Two at Wincanton on just his second start. Things went awry afterwards and he was off for over two years before returning at Haydock last November, fourth to The Jukebox Man, and his season ended pulled up at Newbury. But the handicapper has eased him 4lb, he goes well fresh, and he has winning form at the track.

14:41 Market Rasen: Handicap Chase

The race-fitness of PAPER MILL could prove crucial over this stamina test, and Stuart Edmunds’ gelding arrives in form having won last time at Southwell. The Schiaparelli gelding had shown up well in his two prior runs before a first-time visor sparked a six-length beating of Law Of Supply, and there could be more to come now blinkers are tried. The form of his earlier Worcester fourth has worked out well and, while he has a 5lb rise to deal with, he looks a thorough stayer who should have no issue with the trip or ground.

15:00 Aintree: William Hill Old Roan Limited Handicap Chase (Grade 2)

WENDIGO looked a chaser to follow last term when winning on just his second start, beating No Questions Asked in the Grade Two John Francome Chase at Newbury, and Jamie Snowden’s gelding can make a winning return in the day’s feature. The Great Pretender gelding was later third in a Kempton Grade One before resuming winning ways at Ayr. He fell in the Brown Advisory at Cheltenham, and his Mildmay run can be forgiven as he was kicked at the start. That race has thrown up a Grade Two winner since, and now dropping into a handicap off a mark that is not too prohibitive, a big run would be no shock, with trip and ground both no issue.

15:20 Galway: Rated Novice Hurdle

OLE OLE was considered good enough for a crack at the Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival last term, where he fell three out, but he made amends with a win at Bellewstown next time. Gavin Cromwell’s gelding ran better than the bare result when pitched into a Listed handicap hurdle last month, and should find this easier, with the form of that Bellewstown win boosted by the third since. He wore a hood at Bellewstown that was absent last time and it is reinstated here. He concedes weight all round, but remains a progressive sort, and this longer trip may bring further improvement.

15:35 Aintree: Handicap Hurdle

HILLBERRY HILL won as he pleased on the bridle at Southwell in March on his first start for Kim Bailey, and the Kingston Hill gelding can make a winning reappearance. Twice-raced in Ireland for Mags Mullins, he won at Thurles at the second attempt before joining this yard, then ran out a six-length winner over The Flier Begley at Southwell. Lightly-raced and still unexposed, he could have more to come this season, and his opening mark on his first try at a handicap might well underestimate him.
