What is the UEFA Nations League?
The new concept has been seven years in the making and will consist of 55 European nations. They are split into four leagues, A-D, based on their UEFA ranking at the end of the World Cup 2018 qualifying matches. Within the four leagues, the nations will be divided once again into groups or either three or four teams.
At the end of the group phase, the winner of each league will be promoted and the bottom club will be relegated. The winners of the four groups in league A will play in the final phase, the ‘Final Four’ where the winner will be crowned.
Portugal won the first ever Nations League, beating the Netherlands in the final. There will be 55 participants in this season’s Nations League tournament with the final stages taking place in 2021. World Cup 2022 qualifying fits into the Nations League, giving teams an extra chance to qualify for Qatar 2022.
“World Cup qualifying initially remains largely the same, with ten group winners advancing directly to the finals in Qatar. The format of the play-offs has evolved, though, and will now consist of two knockout rounds from which three teams qualify. It will involve the ten group runners-up plus the best two UEFA Nations League group winners (based on their overall UEFA Nations League rankings) who did not directly qualify or reach the play-offs.”
