Portugal vs Uzbekistan Match Preview
There’s been a lot of noise around this Portugal squad since that 1-1 with DR Congo. Seven shots, one on target, and Ronaldo looking more like a passenger than the focal point everyone expects him to be. Now they’ve got Uzbekistan in Houston, and frankly, this looks like exactly the kind of game where Martinez’s side either silence the doubters or the questions get a whole lot louder.
The numbers from that opener weren’t pretty. Portugal had 75% possession against DR Congo and still managed an xG of just 0.87. One shot on target in 90 minutes. That’s the joint-fewest shots Portugal have registered in any World Cup match in their history. Plenty of noise about whether Ronaldo, now 41, even fits this current setup anymore, with Martinez seemingly preferring short-passing specialists over the kind of pacey wide players the captain has always thrived alongside. None of that changes the underlying quality, though. Bruno Fernandes just broke the Premier League single-season assist record. Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto, Joao Neves, Vitinha, this is still one of the deepest squads at the entire tournament, and Portugal scored 20 goals across just six qualifying matches, including a 9-1 demolition of Armenia.
Uzbekistan, for their part, can hold their heads high even in defeat. First-ever World Cup appearance for a Central Asian nation, and they actually generated 1.61 xG against Colombia compared to the Colombians’ 1.16. Abbosbek Fayzullaev’s header was their first-ever World Cup goal, and at 167cm he became the shortest player this century to score a headed goal at the tournament. Fabio Cannavaro, the man with a World Cup winner’s medal himself, has them set up in a compact shape that genuinely troubled Colombia for periods. The problem is they’ve now lost three straight against decent opposition. There’s a real injury concern too with Ashurmatov forced off in the second half last time out.
No history between these two whatsoever. First-ever meeting, full stop. Portugal’s recent record against Asian sides hasn’t been flattering either, a loss to South Korea and a draw with Iran in recent tournament cycles.

There’s no real way to dress this up, the price tells you everything about the gap in quality. Portugal have players drawn from Barcelona, Manchester City, PSG and Chelsea. Uzbekistan’s squad is built mostly around Central Asian and Iranian club football, Khusanov at Man City the obvious exception. Uzbekistan have failed to score in seven of their last eleven outings overall, and against this level of Portuguese pressure their attacking output should dry up further. A clean sheet feels like the natural baseline result here.
Cristiano Ronaldo Anytime Goalscorer @ 19/20
He was quiet against DR Congo, a few clever runs and not much else to show for it, but write him off and he tends to make you regret it. Thirteen goals across his recent run of matches and renewed motivation after a frustrating opener. He’s chasing history too, sitting on the brink of records nobody else in the men’s game will ever touch. Against a Uzbekistan defence that has conceded seven goals in its last three matches against decent opposition, backing Ronaldo to find a way through at just under evens looks like solid value.
Utkir Yusupov Over 4.5 Saves @ 19/20
This is the one that captures the shape of the game perfectly. Portugal are going to dominate territory and create chance after chance, and Yusupov is going to be the busiest man on the pitch dealing with it. He’s already shown he can produce a string of saves under pressure, that 1.61 xG Uzbekistan generated against Colombia came alongside a backline that had to work overtime at the other end too. With Portugal’s wide players stretching the play and crosses coming in all afternoon, five or more saves from the Uzbek keeper looks like a near certainty.

Worth a punt at this price. Portugal will be frustrated if Uzbekistan dig in and slow the game down, which is exactly what a side with nothing to lose tends to do, fouling cynically to break up momentum. Khusanov already picked up a caution against Colombia and was sent off in a low key international last November, so there’s a track record of ill discipline there. Throw in a referee making his World Cup debut and the natural physicality of a side under pressure trying to survive, and five or more cards across the 90 minutes is a realistic outcome at a price that pays out nicely.
