ITV’s cameras are split between Newmarket and York this Saturday, 10 October, with the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes the feature and the historic Cesarewitch to close, and we have a best bet in all eight televised races.
Rock Montreal is the NAP in the Autumn Stakes, with Desert Castle the Next Best in the Dewhurst. Today’s selections are in the panel below, followed by the full race-by-race analysis.

13:15 Newmarket – Darley Stakes (Group 3, 1m1f)
Humidity gets us started with the strongest form on offer in the Group 3 opener. A Royal Ascot winner last season when landing the Chesham Stakes, he also chased home Bow Echo on his final juvenile start. He has not been seen since, which is a nagging concern, but he hails from a top yard and looks capable of defying the absence against this lot.
13:30 York – Rockingham Stakes (Listed, 6f, 2yo)
Hickory Lad looks well suited to this test on the Knavesmire. A speedy sort who will likely race prominently – often exactly where you want to be at York – he was a fine third at this level here two starts ago, beaten not far. This reads a weaker race on paper, and if he runs to that level he looks sure to go close.
13:50 Newmarket – Zetland Stakes (Group 3, 1m2f, 2yo)
Netherstream is worth chancing at the prices in the Zetland Stakes. He has got better with every run in a short career and was last seen winning well here at the track. The booking of Billy Loughnane is eye-catching, and over this extended trip – the furthest a two-year-old will be asked to go all year – he looks ready to step forward again.
14:05 York – Handicap (extended 1m2f)
Water To Wine looks the most exciting runner in a trappy York handicap. A winner on his first two starts by a combined 15 lengths, he was well fancied for the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot but went too keen and faded to third. He is better than that and should have learned plenty. Back in handicap company with a guaranteed strong gallop, an improved display is expected. Stall 20 makes life difficult, but get a decent early position and he can win.
14:25 Newmarket – Autumn Stakes (Group 3, 1m) – NAP
Rock Montreal is the NAP in the Group 3 Autumn Stakes. He should have won last time but was given too much to do, and that was still a fine effort. The step up to a mile looks sure to suit this big, imposing sort, and the booking of William Buick is a further plus. After his impressive Yarmouth debut victory, he can return to winning ways here.
15:00 Newmarket – Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1, 7f, 2yo) – Next Best
Desert Castle can take the Group 1 Dewhurst and is our Next Best. There may be little between him and market rival Darkness Falls, but Desert Castle looks to have the extra speed that should tell over this 7f trip. The Frankel colt has bolted up on both career starts, the first here before following up at Group 2 level on just his second outing. He looks a special colt and can prove it today.
15:17 York – Sprint Trophy Handicap (6f) – Each-Way
Annaf makes each-way appeal in the competitive Sprint Trophy Handicap. A Group 3 winner this time last year, his season has not gone to plan, but as a result he has dropped well down the handicap. Two starts ago he was a fast-finishing fourth in the competitive Portland Handicap at Doncaster, suggesting he still has fire in the belly, and he got no run at Ascot last time. He is worth another chance to back up that Portland promise.
15:40 Newmarket – Cesarewitch (Handicap, 2m2f) – Each-Way
Kirchner is the one to be with each-way in the marathon Cesarewitch. The James Owen-trained stayer was unlucky not to win the Northumberland Plate when travelling strongly but caught close home, then quickened away impressively to win a small-field contest at Ascot. He was below that when sixth at York last time, but you would expect more. Freshened back up, the nature of this 2m2f test should suit, and stall 3 looks ideal so he will not be trapped wide.
